If you're thinking about moving to Puerto Rico, it's a good idea to understand some of the good, the bad, and the ugly of island life.
Today I'll share my top 5 pros and cons about living in Puerto Rico. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it does cover some of the major costs versus benefits that people need to consider before moving to the island. We talk about the beaches, towns, people, crime, culture, infrastructure, tax incentives, trash, and more. I also explain how we ended up living on the island for almost 4 years.
Also, don't miss our real estate ride-along series exploring opportunities on the northwest side of the island in some popular retirement towns, including Isabela, Aguadilla, Aguada, and Rincon.
Then there's our San Juan series of real estate videos, where we explore the top, up-and-coming neighborhoods, including Calle Loiza, Ocean Park, Isla Verde, Santurce, El Gandul, Tres Talleres, and Guaynabo, all worth considering if you're thinking about retiring to the island.

Thanks for sharing your experience. First, I have to say your sense of adventure and open mindedness is impressive. It is incredibly brave to move to an entirely foreign place. I love that you shared both your good and bad experiences living in PR, and that you stuck it out for a while. I did also appreciate your story of being invited to a family gathering of complete strangers and feeling welcomed. Your sense that we care for our elderly is also spot on. When our parents age we don't go looking for the closest (or farthest) Nursing home to place them in and quickly move in or sell their home. It is truly amazing how big the Nursing home business is on the mainland. We CHERISH our parents and express a deep sense of gratitude for them. I do anyway, and those close to me also. I wish you all the happiness this life has to offer and know you would make a good neighbor wherever you choose to call home next. Remember that you will always be Bienvenida a su casa. Take care.

Why would anyone have any heartburn about what she's saying? Myself or anyone else can live anywhere and have 5 pros and 5 cons about a place. That's all she's doing.. I could live in Hawaii and have 5 pros and cons or Kansas and have the same. People get offended for the stupidest reasons. She seems like a nice person whose just giving her perspective that some people might find interesting or helpful.

This is a very good video, she hit a lot of great points, any where you live has pros & cons, I love visiting P.R. ,know what to expect, it's a beautiful island with friendly laid back people, love, love the food, she is correct about the weather, but it's an island, best time for me to go is when it's winter, I do love my 4 season, well, not crazy about winter anymore, lol, but over all, I'm one that gets tired of a season & ready for the next. There are so many lovely places to vist their, you just have to know the right people & know where to go.

Wow why is everyone so dramatic about this? She said some really nice things about the pros and the cons aren’t even bad what she said and she didn’t say it smug or disrespectfully. She’s also not wrong with some of it for example the roads are pretty rough, dealing with Hacienda is always a mission etc. just because I say that doesn’t mean I don’t LOVE living in PR because I do love it here, and it is amazing!!! I’ve been here for a few years now and don’t plan on going back to the states! I know and understand the Puerto Rican pride, but just because she mentioned a couple of little things about the island that need to be improved doesn’t mean everyone needs to get all worked up and over dramatic!

Sounds pretty objective and I think the experience you have depends on where you've lived. Been living in South Florida since 1997, so I think I'm prepared for the cons in Puerto Rico. It's the pros that are calling me - the people!! I was there four days and made friends for life while I was there. Mountains!! Tropical mountains! Beaches, history, culture - IMO totally worth the move. Definitely, for people who haven't lived in tourist destinations with hurricanes and high crime, this might be a culture shock. But based on where I live, I found Puerto Rico to be quieter, less crowded, and I felt safer than I do living in South Florida.

Puerto Rican here. I agree with everything. I am currently living in TX. However, Texas is very similar in some ways, especially when it comes to rubbish, there is rubbish everywhere, and I hate it because it reminds me of Puerto Rico. The heat during summer is unbearable and much worse than in PR. Will be moving to another state or country soon. The comment regarding government employees is something every Puerto Rican talks/complains about. They truly do not care and you can bring a box of required documents and they'll look and say, "there's some missing come back tomorrow". But I feel it has been like that everywhere I've lived. However, your opinion is pretty good re the cons.

If you move there just to go out to a weekly dinner, or an occasional visit to the beach, you might as well not move there.. You move there to seek a more enjoyable life, its up to You! Thank you for the video. How much did it cost to ship the 40’ shipping container? I would want to completely move there too, if I did, with all my tools. I have found a house that I like in PR, but my home needs to be completely remodeled. Question #1 why are there no windows or doors in that home? Question# 2 What is it like living in the country like, it’s not in a gated community? Question #3 do you know the area of Guaraguao Ward Bayamon? Question #3 in that country area, is a lot size of 27014 SM big? Question #4 Is this area prone to flooding and can a person survive with good windows and doors?

Perhaps if you moved to the west side (but not in Mayagüez) you would have stayed. The east part of the island is extremely crowded, it is where 95% of the crime happens, where the crappiest traffic and roads are, and it where most of the people do noy care about keeping it clean. But to be honest nothing in PR is worse than Los Angeles, New York or Philadephia, among other big cities. Outside of Palmas there is nothing "quiet" other than perhaps Maunabo, in all of the east of the island. My favorite area is the southwest, it looks a lot like California with its desert like geography, but much better beaches. The northwest is also great and there are thousands of Americans living between Añasco and Isabela. San Juan sucks outside of the OSJ area. The northeast is beautiful but with a lot of crime.

Did you moved back to the states or to Chile? I was just curious. I mostly agree with all of your pros and cons. As for criminality, there’s crime everywhere in the states and Puerto Rico is no different. However, it depends where you go. There are certain neighborhoods you don’t want to explore, just like in the mainland. As for the weather, It’s really hot during the summer but during the winter it gets very comfortable with the low 70’s and even 60’s, even cooler on the mountains.

However, it dies out quickly when I think of all the problems I left behind that you mentioned so clearly. Still, it's a beautiful place and most people are wonderful but the messy infrastructure, poor utility services, crazy dealing with any government agency, the noise, the crime rate, the chaotic traffic and general lack of formality takes me back to love living in the States.

I just returned from a two week trip to Aguadilla where my father lives and it was terrible to see the graffiti on abandoned homes on the road, the potholes in the streets and the garbage everywhere…very sad indeed of my island. Another thing I strongly agree with you on is the service if you need assistance with a doctor appt, phone issue service, or car service at the dealership service. It’s very matter of fact type attitude that is so disrespectful of customer’s time. This is why the island 🏝 is suffering so much. It has the potential of being a well run island with so much to offer…

How do you move to a caribbean island and not expect it to be hot all year around?! And if you wanted to be somewhere cooler on the island, you should've moved to the mountains that you literally just mentioned in the pros as being cooler. And as far as trash is concerned, that's everywhere. I've been to plenty of places in the states that were filthy. I went to a state park in NC last year, and there was trash and masks all over the ground leading up to the waterfall that was at that park. And there are a lot of people on the island who care and clean up as much as they can. So in closing, if your going to move somewhere, do your research first.

Every place has its pros and cons. However, I find it hypocritical the fact that people make money out Puerto Rican videos and their people to then turn around and say unpleasant things as true as they may be. Interesting enough, you have different states in the mainland that are worst than third world countries. For example: California where there’s a great homeless population, human feces all over the streets and where they allow thieves stealing in the stores and get away with it, you also have other states where they burn precincts and government buildings and businesses down. It’s a total mess. Puerto Rico may have issues but some states in the mainland I wouldn’t even touch it with a pole. No comparison.

You make an intelligent comment, to use the Puerto Rico name on a video knowing it will attract viewers and then turn around and criticize it is beyond being unpleasant it is so low and disgusting a thing to do, that only human behavior is capable of such mainly coming from those who possibly have some comfort in life (as trump has shown to do calling places sht holes and demeaning so many). Now people in their own defense for making a video such as this may want to claim its true! Well its true in all places! In that case make a video on school shootings in the US or mass murders, or on homelessness in major cities, or crime related to drug addiction in major cities. Having a number of these videos would balance out the "telling the truth" claim, because you know thats coming..

You are wrong! In every country of the world there are pros and cons. She has been working on the island for a long time. Not everything has to be beautiful! It wouldn’t be real! Just remember that Americans contribute to the economy of the island by enjoying, investing or consuming whatever the island has to offer. Most factories on the island are from the USA. That brings progress. That they have tax exemption? Yes, it is a strategy to take businesses to the island that otherwise would go to other countries where people make for working one whole day what Puerto Ricans make in one hour.

By your own admission you listed a good number of reasons why Puerto Rico is a great place to live. However, went you went to the negatives (as an Anglo PR resident for 20 years) I realised that a good number of things that bothered you were because of busy urban living. Such problems including many more like racism, loud arrogance, viscious politics are also part and parcel of US living. Many you could have avoided by living in a mountain town that also would have provided much cooler comfortable climate and a lack of insects that I have experienced nowhere else. Crime is not nearly so bad as you relate. It is found mostly in big cities and is gang or drug related. A place like Chicago, LA, NYC, etc. are extremely more dangerous. You admitted that PR felt way too "foreign". Though it is similar to USA in many ways, it is not acceptable to the majority of USA people who never adapt well no matter where they go. Many places on earth are far superior to USA (PR included), but they are NOT USA. Adaptability is not a common trait for US people. I have seen this frequently, though there are many USA people, myself included, who would NEVER go back even to visit. This is why I oppose any closer relation with USA, especially statehood. You admitted coming for tax reasons. This means that you are wealthier than most of us. What did you do to benefit or change PR for the better? Many PR people oppose ley20 and do not approve of allowing outsiders to have these tax benefits. I am sure many of these "expats" are partying enough to disturb you with the city sounds you abhor. So, please, enjoy your new life, but blogging as someone to give advice on PR, no. And, by the way our mountain tree ferns are indigenous. They are not Australian.
