Yep! I like this a lot as well. Usually on those channels people show only perfectly clean set ups, with no algae (which usually happens only for a very short period of time) and then - puff - let's film another tank (and you never get to see the previous one, which now has minor issues, which are completely normal, btw).

I actually reccomended this type of vid to you a while back. Thanks for showing and the info. Not many great plant growers and scapers ever show their rough times in a scape on video. Keep us updated on the scape and the process of fighting thru. Time, keeping ur sleeves wet and patience is the key! Thanks bro, Peace!

New tank set up tip...Start your aquarium lights on a timer. Have them on for six to seven hours a day. Be patient and test your parameters on a scheduled system. This hobby is wonderful and it is very rewarding. Great info as usual. Looking forward to more updates. Have fun mountain biking. I hear you on tank maintenance as far as pruning mature tanks. Rock on bro!

I totally agree on the lighting - it's a great tip not to have the light on longer than 6 hours a day for the first week. What I do is slowly increase the timing, say1 hour a week, till I reach my final set point (which is 8 hours, currently, but I could do 9 as well). I can't really imagine the set up without timer, to be honest. I also have a dimmer so that I can modify light intensity with no issue.

I am a big fan, and the setup of this tank was a huge inspiration for my new tank which is around 3 weeks old. Now, I'm sure you have much more knowledge in aquariums as me but I did 2 50% water changes for the first 2 weeks and I haven't got a single visible amount of algae. Why didn't you do this? I have MY lights on technically 24/7 with the Finnex 24/7 and don't have a SINGLE algae problem
@moduleman93
@moduleman93 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, My tank has been running for around 3 months (20L with a finnex stingray). Tank has anubias, marsilea and crypts (wendtii, willisii, parva). Just recently started getting brown diatoms and tiny tufts of BBA. The stingray is around 42 par and the glass top cuts it 10-15% to around 36-40. Should I look into decreasing the par further or reducing the photo period for the tank since its lower light demanding plants? I think with black window screen I can get it to 20-24 par if thats enough for the parva.

I planted some Monte Carlo in a new 20 long just about the same time you started this aquascape. I’ve dosed Flourish twice a week as well as Excel every other day and my Monte Carlo and Pygmy chain sword have done nothing. I have about 3” of eco complete and am running a planted+ 24/7 with 5 hours on max during the day. The 20 long is only 13” high so I thought I would get plenty of light to the substrate. But my carpet plants just seem stunted.

do any of the bacteria starters like the ADA ones help mature your tank sooner?
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
Terry Foldy Holes not technically sooner, but can take up residual waste as the bacteria beds mature. It takes 21-30 days for bacteria to mature. The additives don't speed this up. They just help reduce and decompose initial amounts as the bacteria mature. And aid as food for the bacteria. Depending on type of additive. Hope this makes sense.

So does the principles of biological activity within a mature substrate also apply to an HOB? By this I ask if a HOB with the capacity to hold more media and conversely more biological life also help reduce diatoms or do you believe the impact is minimal? I just started testing this theory as my 8 month old 40B is still experiencing minor diatom issues so I changed from a Aquaclear 50 to a Marineland 350 and tripled the sponge capacity and also added Seachem Matrix.

Rod S well soils, such as Andisols, which is what Aquasoil is. Volcanic Ash based clays with humus are already superior for biochemical processing. I don't think it would have much impact, but if your substrate is poor it could help. It just means your microbial fauna are out of balance, as to why, I am not sure, but it isn't reaching full maturity. It is oscillating.
@BertShackleford

My QT tank seems to have microfauna such as copepods, daphnia, ostracoda and so on. Are these tiny creatures a danger to my Blue Dream shrimp fry that are approximately two days old? Secondly, I don't usually have an issue with algae when suddenly I awoke one morning to see green fuzz over everything in both tanks, and now I'm left puzzled. The hardest part of addressing any algae issue is 'time & patience'. For example, Method One may take approx two weeks to complete, and after the initial treatment, you still may be facing the same problem. It's a matter of trial and error, plus the factor of time & patience tend to make the entire process quite daunting. Nonetheless, we persevere and continue to treat our tanks until the proper balance has been established. The only caveat is the fact that we specialize in nano tanks (currently five gallons and less), and the room for leniency/error is slim to none. I've been contemplating the addition of CO2 to help win the war against the algae, but I'm unaware of anyone using CO2 systems in such small tanks. Is this something that can be applicable to nano tanks? Thanks for all the hard work and inspiration. Keep up the good work my friend.

Do you know if diatomes goes away by it self over time without any manual removal or is manual removal needed + water changes etc? It's an algae bloom. Do 1/3 water change and change nothing else. Be sure NOT TO add fertilizers (or really, really sparingly) for the first 2 weeks. Also have a light on for up to 6-7 hours a day and no longer, then slowly increase this period (about 1 hour a week) till you reach your set point. If an algae bloom persists, do another water change. Remember about weekly water changes (about 1/4 vol).

Precisely! Diatoms are just normal for non-established tanks. Had them in every single newly set-up tank :) Then they just go away on their own. No action needed. Of course you can scrub them during water change.

Sławek B. How long does it usually last in your aquariums? I have it in my newly set up aquarium.

That depends on how long microbial beds develop. In my case it has never been longer than a month. Just scrub it gently during water changes. And remember, the actual tank cycling/maturation might take much longer depending on the substrate, filters, fish etc. It is also a good practice to start with about 6 hours of light and slowly increase it (by slowly I mean about 1 hour a week). I would not recommend having the light on for more than 10-11 hours a day. But again it depends on the set up and lighting (for instance, if you have a dimmer that simulates sunrise and sunset you might keep it a bit longer).

I was wanting to streamline the content and then make more updated content that still covers the same types of subjects. Just new and updated content. I have been starting a new business after getting laid off, so things were crazy for a while. I will hopefully start making more videos this spring, thanks for watching

Sorry to say, this website needs a little work. I just went to browse the "SALE" shrimp deals, and the front page deal ain't on the back page. I will remove this comment when I see your reply, just thought you should know.
