Dick Dale... invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.

Yeah, that was some graphic silliness. I was waiting for the Silver Surfer in space... He plays using strings that are like cables. Very thick. That's how he got that sound. Also, he's left handed. The last time I saw him he almost had a punk band trio. Loud, simple, memorable and way-out fun! Looks bad and tough but a nice guy. Don't tell anyone.

Dick Dale was amazing. Was sad to hear of his passing. He was the king of the surf guitar. But, the reverb or delay sound was pioneered by another great guitarist way back around 1950 by Johnny Guitar Watson in his epic recording "Space Guitar". He used a classic trick of recording thanks to the spacing of record, play back, and monitor heads on old reel to reel recording tape decks. Dick used Leo Fender's reverb unit to get that classic wet, delayed reverb effect. I have a tube Fender reverb unit and nothing else has that classic surf guitar sound. I really enjoy listening to both Dick Dale and Johnny Guitar Watson. Two totally different types of music, but both musicians are just so great, May they both rest in peace... Or, maybe start an amazing guitar band in heaven!

Gorgeous!!! Dick Dale is one of the most accomplished guitarists, and most accomplished Strat players, in the history of electric guitar. The Strat was invented in 1954, so Dick Dale was way ahead of the pack. And, dig his take on a country/western standard. And, he's another brilliant leftie! He's fabulous.

The guitar playing, the playing . . . Oh, he signs autographs after his shows. He signed my Pulp Fiction CD ( I heard him for the 1st time on Pulp Fiction)). He told me to buy better shred than dead which I did. I had a greatest hits CD at the time.
