At Morpheyes Studio we are humbled, honored, and excited that many of you took the time to share your stories with us and the community. This series would not be possible without your enthusiasm and vulnerability. Our aim is to show young Deaf Queer people that they are not alone in the world, and give them hope through representation.
Here is one of the many beautiful stories shared with us -- by Dickie Hearts!
DESCRIPTIVE TRANSCRIPT:
(The logo of a heart with Pride flag stripes and an outline of an ear in one half of the heart appears on a white background again. The heart logo spins and slides left and right, revealing the words “DEAF + QUEER” in funky black lettering. The heart logo slides up above the title. Then appears a person with short curly dark hair wearing a red shirt in front of beige cabinets.)
"Hi, I’m proud to be to Deaf and Queer because of our incredible LGBTQ history! We’ve come a very long, long way to get to where we are today. Even starting with Stonewall Riots, I as a Deaf LGBTQ-BIPOC, am inspired knowing the Riots were led by Marsha P. Johnson, a Black Transgender woman; Sylvia Rivera, a Latina Transgender woman; and Stormé DeLarverie, a Black Lesbian, who all fought against police brutality- which is ironic in how timely it is today with Black Lives Matter movement. Just five years ago, marriage equality was passed and literally, last week the Supreme Court ruled that discrimination against the LGBTQ in the workplace is now prohibited. It’s a gay time to be gay! I do want to take this opportunity to recognize our Deaf Queers who fought and struggled through hardship before us. That is what moves me. I’m grateful to them and that is what makes me proud to be a Deaf Queer! All of our hard work - which reminds me, there’s still a lot ahead of us: Transgender rights. We are all not equal until our Transgender brothers, siblings, and sisters are equal in healthcare. That said, I want to take this moment and appreciate our work, struggles, and victories…. Happy Pride."
