I'm pretty sure that the reference to Abraham's bosom was a literal reference. I say this because when the rich man saw Lazarus there he appealed to Abraham to make Lazarus serve him.

There is one thing we know for sure about the "Apostles Creed". It did not come from the Apostles. However, there are five facts from the scriptures which can be counted on one hand. 1. virgin birth 2. sinless life 3. perfect sacrifice at Calvary 4. resurrection 5, second coming

Agree up to the "absent from the body " verse. It doesn't say that when you are absent from the body that you are automatically present with the Lord, but that he would rather be away from his body and be with the Lord. Reading the verses prior puts this verse in the proper context Saying that while we are alive in this body we are away from being present with the Lord but he would rather be with the Lord. Paradise and Hades are not gone till death and hades are thrown into the lake of fire.

Yes, Medieval and Renaissance art, Pagan influence, and the soft, nominaly-Christian culture that uncritically believes that babies become angels when they die and that Satan is ruling now in Hell, have seriously distorted the fairly straightforward meaning of the words we use today for these things.
@jameswoodard4304

One can see this depearture most clearly in Dante's Inferno, in which the Renaissance poet has combined the influence of Classical Pagan poetry and philosophy, a vague Biblical understanding, and a Medival tendency to physicalize and sensationalize Hades/Hell, into something that had a defining impact on the conception of death and Hell in the Western world. And it had very little to do with the Biblical Sheol/Hades.

The concept that Jesus went to hell after His death on the cross comes primarily from the Apostles’ Creed, which states, “He descended into hell.” There are also a few Scriptures which, depending on how they are translated, describe Jesus going to “hell.” In studying this issue, it is important to first understand what the Bible teaches about the realm of the dead. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word used to describe the realm of the dead is SHEOL. It simply means “the place of the dead” or “the place of departed souls/spirits.” The New Testament Greek equivalent of sheol is hades, which also refers to “the place of the dead.” Other Scriptures in the New Testament indicate that sheol/hades is a temporary place, where souls are kept as they await the final resurrection and judgment. Revelation 20:11-15 gives a clear distinction between hades and the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the permanent and final place of judgment for the lost. Hades, then, is a temporary place. Many people refer to both hades and the lake of fire as “hell,” and this causes confusion. Jesus did not go to a place of torment after His death, but He did go to hades. SHEOL or HADES was a realm with two divisions-a place of blessing and a place of judgment (Matthew 11:23; 16:18; Luke 10:15; 16:23; Acts 2:27-31). The abodes of the saved and the lost are both generally called “hades” in the Bible. The abode of the saved is also called “Abraham’s bosom” (KJV) or “Abraham’s side” (NIV) in Luke 16:22 and “paradise” in Luke 23:43. The abode of the unsaved is called “hell” (KJV) or “Hades” (NIV) in Luke 16:23. The abodes of the saved and the lost are separated by a “great chasm” (Luke 16:26). When Jesus died, He went to the blessed side of sheol and, from there, took the believers with Him to heaven (Ephesians 4:8-10). The judgment side of sheol/hades has remained unchanged. All unbelieving dead go there awaiting their final judgment in the future. Did Jesus go to sheol/hades? Yes, according to Ephesians 4:8-10 and 1 Peter 3:18-20. Some of the confusion has arisen from such passages as Psalm 16:10-11 as translated in the King James Version: “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. . . . Thou wilt show me the path of life.” “Hell” is not a correct translation in this verse. A correct reading would be “the grave” or “sheol.” Jesus said to the thief beside Him, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43); He did not say, “I will see you in hell.” Jesus’ body was in the tomb; His soul/spirit went to be with the blessed in sheol/hades. Unfortunately, in many versions of the Bible, translators are not consistent, or correct, in how they translate the Hebrew and Greek words for “sheol,” “hades,” and “hell.” Some have the viewpoint that Jesus went to “hell” or the suffering side of sheol/hades in order to further be punished for our sins. This idea is completely unbiblical. It was the death of Jesus on the cross that sufficiently provided for our redemption. It was His shed blood that effected our own cleansing from sin (1 John 1:7-9). As He hung there on the cross, He took the sin burden of the whole human race upon Himself. He became sin for us: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). This imputation of sin helps us understand Christ’s struggle in the garden of Gethsemane with the cup of sin which would be poured out upon Him on the cross. As Jesus neared death, He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). His suffering in our place was completed. His soul/spirit went to hades (the place of the dead). Jesus did not go to “hell” or the suffering side of hades; He went to “Abraham’s side” or the blessed side of hades. Jesus’ suffering ended the moment He died. The payment for sin was paid. He then awaited the resurrection of His body and His return to glory in His ascension. Did Jesus go to hell? No. Did Jesus go to sheol/hades? Yes. #

Before I proceed with my reply, allow me to make a disclaimer: I do not wish to sow discord among the brethren over this issue, and I do not dismiss the opposing view as heretical, since it is a debatable matter and the gospel is the death, BURIAL and resurrection of Christ, so whether he went to a good Hades or bad Hades is not damnable heresy. But I would like to challenge your assertions and I really hope you will respond, I would welcome your challenges to my assertion… How can we assert for certain that Abraham’s Bosom/Side is a place? It could literally be Abraham’s Bosom, much in the same way that the disciple whom Jesus loved was reclining in Jesus’s bosom - Lazarus could be leaning against Abraham’s Bosom in heaven. In your third paragraph, you stated that Hades/Sheol has two divisions. Of the verses you cited, Matthew 11:23, Luke 10:15 and 16:23 explicitly describe Hades in a negative manner, additionally Luke 10:15 contracts Heaven as being the opposite of Hades. matthew 16:18 and Acts 2:27-31 are more open to interpretation because you could look at it in two ways: • Hades is only a place of judgement, which is why its gates will not prevail against the church (because we are saved), and that is why in Acts 2:26 Jesus heart rejoiced because his soul would not be left in this awful place. In Psalm 16:9-10 David did rejoice that God would not “leave” his soul in Hell, but this could simply be a prophetic statement about Jesus rather than attributing it to David himself. • Hades could have two divisions as you suppose, which is why the gates will not prevail against the church because NT believers will bypass Abraham’s bosom and go straight to heaven: I find this view unlikely because if there is a paradise side, why would Jesus need to insist that its gates will not prevail against the church, and why did his heart rejoice that he was not left there? (Unless you would argue that his heart rejoiced because he needs to be resurrected regardless of whether Hades was good?) Jesus’s words to the thief on the cross do not necessarily contradict Jesus suffering in Hades, because if we acknowledge his deity in the Godhead, Psalm 139:8 says “If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in , behold, thou art there.” - He is not restricted to one realm as part of the Godhead. In 1 Peter 3:19-20, Jesus preached unto the “spirits in prison, which sometime (long ago) were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah…” - the spirits in this prison must undoubtedly be in torment because of being disobedient and being in prison. Describing Hades as a prison is consistent with 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6. (Unless you would assert that he was preaching across the chasm?) When Jesus said “It is finished” he still needed to go to Hades in any case and rise again… so what was it that was finished? It could be his ministry on Earth or his suffering specifically in the flesh on the cross, not his time in Hades. Those who claim Abraham’s Bosom is a place might be inclined to use John 3:13 to prove that no man has ascended into heaven except Christ. However… what is meant by “ascended”? It could be that Jesus ascended of his own accord, but let us not forget that Elijah was carried into heaven by a chariot of fire. Enoch was “taken away by God” (Hebs/Gen) - I believe these are shadows of Jesus Christ. My key point though is that it is not unfeasible that OT believers did go to heaven, but they did not ascend in the flesh like Jesus did in His resurrected body… Enoch and Elijah were carried and other believers had to die in the flesh. Some additional points to consider: • Psalms 9:17 - If both believers and non-believers go to Sheol, isn’t this judgment of the wicked somewhat meaningless? • Psalms 89:6 - The sons of the mighty could refer to the sons of God (believers) and this verse would imply that they are in heaven • Proverbs 23:14 - if Sheol has a good side, why does the proverbial disciplined son need delivering from it? • Jonah 2:2 - Jonah was afflicted in the belly of the whale which he described as Sheol, he was not in a paradise half of it To close this off, I would also point to the OT offerings that were a shadow of Jesus Christ… consider the burned offerings, that the meat that was sacrificed was also burnt. I think the reason people have a problem with Jesus descending into Hell is not that it cannot be supported by the Bible at all, but this doctrine just so happens to be preached often by a lot of the false prosperity preachers that are out there (who are an embarrassment to the entire faith). However I hope that Speseebo would find time to see my response and reply to the verses and exposition given above, and provide your reply. Sorry for such a long comment. Blessings of God be upon you and remain with you, in Christ our Lord.

Jon 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Mat 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah: Mat 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Joh 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Joh 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, Joh 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. Joh 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Luk 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, Luk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; Luk 16:23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Act 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 1Pe 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 1Pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 1Pe 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 1Pe 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. Paradise no longer exists, it was a place for the righteous dead to be until Christ came and opened the way to heaven by His atonement. Isa 5:14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it. Rev 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: the dead in Christ now go to Heaven to await the Resurrection. after those in Paradise moved to Heaven then Paradise was no more, hell then had more room to enlarge itself for the millions and millions more that would go there.

It’s my understanding that when Jonah talks about going down to Sheol in regard to him going down into the waters is because Sheol is thought to be a sort of watery abode. Jonah going down into Sheol and being delivered after three days and three nights can be seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus without us needing to come to the conclusion that he physically died. Of course if Jonah did die God could bring him back to life no problem, I just don’t see that in the text.

Fun fact: In Germanic tradition, Hell was actually a cold, icy place where the dishonored dead went. So when Christian missionaries came to the Saxons, Vikings, etc. and began describing Hell as the Bible does, the Germanic people were very confused, as an eternity of "heat" sounded rather appealing, if anything.

I stumbled upon Doug Wilson . Wow! Praise the foolish people for listening to re configured garbage. Everything Doug talks about has his Theological .Twist.. Dont confuse faith with anything that Doug spews forth.. Just another Evangelical who is making a living stating fiction as fact.. Believe in God if you wish..but just dont listen to this guys never ending Scripture output..This guy is one continuing parable.. Shale ,Hell, Hades.. an answer for everything... Every thing he says is based on his Fundamentalism. Dont be fooled.. Listen to convoluted words and be objective..

James Clark James this Guy Doug Wilson may sound viable to a Fundamentalist. As an ex Christian i find he has re defined the bible in his own language.If we were to understand Dougs teachings then a common man cannot possibly understand the scriptures..He translates every verse to his understanding and pseudo Intellectual arguments.. He actually babbles on, and in the end actually says nothing.. I have noticed this on all his interviews..A narrow minded Fundamentalist who gives the authoritarian tone to his explanations but leaves the listener thinking only.. What the Fuck are you talking about.. See his explanation on Homosexuality in another video and you will understand why i claim this...I respect your fundamentalist beliefs James, but i cannot accept this guys version of any scripture.. Evangelical Nut job. disguised as Critical thinker. . I thought the bible was for any person to get meaning from .. Listening to Doug it seems none of us were anywhere close to an understanding. Praise the Lord..Just don't Praise this Guy...

From dictionaryDotCom: "before 900; Middle English, Old English hel ( l ); cognate with Old High German hell ( i ) a ( German Hölle ), Old Norse hel, Gothic halja; akin to Old English helan to cover, hide, and to hull." It would all have been less confusing if the original words were just transliterated and carried over from Greek without the chance of culture redefinition. Sheol/Hades and Gehenna never would have been confused as the same thing.

Would you like to know the real mystery of Christ under the heart of the earth and the time line of the events by using (jewish time which realy is God's)? There is a book that Biblically proves avery theory wrong to the core, Romans 3:4 says: God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar, God also said in Isaiah 28:13: But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here (from the old Scriptures) a little, and there (from the new Scriptures) a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken when proven wrong. I' am the author of that book called: the Sign of Jonah and the real Passion of the Christ by Celedonio Miranda, available on amazon kindle books. there you will find the truth about this so controversial doctrine and more mysteries unveiled plain and clear, Peace to you

Hebrews 9:27 "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgement." We are judged straight after death. If we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we 'wait' in an area in Hades called Paradise or 'Abraham's bosom . There are two sections in Hades (a holding place of the dead) - Hell and Paradise. On judgement day, Hades will cease to exist as the saved will be in Heaven and the damned will be thrown in the Lake of Fire. Jesus descended into hell is not biblical. He was in the 'other' half of Hades. That is why He told the criminal next to Him on the cross "Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." Some translations of the word Hades or Sheol as 'hell; is wrong. Blessings.

"What can He ascended mean except that he first descended into the lower earthly regions to preach the Gospel to they which disobeyed long ago?" - The Bible This tells us that while his body was laid to rest in a tomb with the rich, He Himself did descend into He'll, mayhap even into Tartarus, the lowest and deepest and most bitter of places in He'll, though he himself did not become debilitated, but was altogether functional that he might make known the mystery of the Gospel to all 8f God's Creation, even the very depths of petition that he mightblater ascend into heaven 40 days after he was raised from the dead that might, as he is called in the Book of Revelation, be called the Ruler of God's Creation, whose glory fills the Entire Universe. While I agree with everything Pastor Wilson says here, there are two things I was taught that he doesn't mention. The first has to do with what Christ's spirit was doing while His body lay in the grave. Yes, I believe that His spirit descended into Sheol/Hades to announce to the spirits in prison His victory over death. However, I was taught that additionally, before His bodily resurrection, His spirit ascended into heaven, leading the spirits of the righteous dead with Him from Abraham's bosom into heaven, based on Psalm 68:18 & Ephesians 4:8, which in some translations does not say that "He led captivity captive," but that "He led captives in his train." The second is the identity of the saints who arose from the dead in Matthew 27:52-53. I was taught that these were those saints who had died after John the Baptist had begun his ministry. Unlike the Old Testament saints, who died believing in a future Messiah Who would come one day, these saints died knowing that Jesus is the Messiah. They didn't need Christ to announce Himself to them because they already knew. And what were they doing when they went into Jerusalem? I was taught that they were witnessing to the truth of Christ, although I admit that the Bible doesn't specifically say that.

Having paid for our sins... Romans 8:2 ...the law of sin and of death. Had no legal right to detain the righteous in Hades in a state of death [without a body] and so He [Jesus] arose with all of those who had trusted in His appearance! [Seen in the sacrifice] As at the end of Doug's talk, I have also struggled with the condition of those bodiless souls in Paradise, both when in Hades below before the Cross or in the Third Heaven above after. Sleep, rest or whatever seems to fit... especially when I recall Samuel's frustration of being carried up by angels to answer Saul's request, but I still reserve judgement. So pleased to have stumbled upon Doug Wilson, someone who actually seems to understand the basic principles of what happened at the Cross... going to have to watch some more of his videos.

@esculent1

+jamie Russell - With respect I fervently disagree, Jesus' soul was clearly in Hades while His body lay waiting for His victory in the tomb. Acts 2:27+31 29 - For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One['s body] to see corruption [in the tomb]. ... 31 - he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. Some make the mistake of pointing to Acts 2:34... Acts 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, ...as evidence that David no longer exists, not understand that the point Paul is making in say Acts 2:25-34, is that the prophecy doesn't speak of David's RESURRECTION and taking to Heaven, but Christs. Additionally Paul speaks about taking-off this body and putting on the new, and that we should not be found unclothed as those waiting for judgement in Hades. 2 Corinthians 5:1-4 1 - For we know that if our earthly house [body], this tent, is destroyed, we [who are saved] have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 - For in this [corruptible body] we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our [immortal body] habitation which is from heaven, 3 - if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 - For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be *unclothed, but further clothed*, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Jesus certainly died, but death doesn't mean as say the SDA, that the soul ceases to exist without the body it clearly does.

Last I visited this topic, I was looking deep into the angelic view of Genesis 6, where the sons of God took for themselves human wives and produced giants. I read in the book of Enoch that 200 watcher angels sinned by coming down to earth and marrying human women before the flood. The reason I think this is relevant, is that Enoch essentially holds that the place these angels were imprisoned is a place called Tartarus. Tartarus is mentioned only once in the whole Bible, and it’s referred to as the prison for this specific group of angels. 2Pe 2:4-5 “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell (Tartarus), and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;” Jude 6-7 expands on this idea. “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in similar manner to these, having given themselves over to immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” The sin of the angels is directly linked to the sexual sin of Sodom and Gomorrah and other cities, who had given themselves over to fornication and indulged in strange flesh (KJV) or pursued unnatural desire (ESV.) And then we come to 1 Peter 3:19: “19 By which also he (Christ) went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” It’s important to know that the ancient Hebrews believed the world (cosmos) to be enclosed and surrounded by a solid dome barrier (Job 37:18) with waters above it and oceans below (Genesis 1:6). I personally hold such a literal view also. They believed that God’s throne was directly above the solid dome that holds the waters above, and that the underworld was beneath our feet in the heart of the earth (Matt 12:40). They considered that the underworld consisted of three tiers, with Tartarus being the deepest, darkest region of all, like a special place of solitary confinement. Essentially I don’t regard the Book of Enoch as equivalent to scripture, though many of the early Church Fathers did, such as Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus and Tertullian, who wrote that the Book of Enoch had been rejected by the Jews because it contained prophecies pertaining to Christ. That said, I do hold it in very high regard, as did the first century Jews (It was quoted in the book of Jude). At the very least, it is of great historical significance. To summarise, I loosely hold that Christ went to proclaim victory to these specific imprisoned angels in Tartarus.

I would love to know Pastor Wilson’s thoughts on the conjectural emendation of 1 Peter 3:19 suggested by EJ Goodspeed, and others. Compare 1 Peter 3:18-20 in E.J. Goodspeed (The New Testament - An American Translation, 1923): ... but he was made alive in the Spirit. In it *Enoch* went and preached even to those spirits that were in prison, who had once been disobedient, when in Noah’s time ... And Goodspeed’s comment: “The spirits in prison are not the departed, who are never spoken of in this way, but the fallen angels mentioned in Gen. 6:1 - 7:4 ... The reference is unmistakably to the story of the mission of Enoch to these fallen angels described in the Book of Enoch ... chapters 12 - 16. The name “Enoch” may have dropped out of the Greek text by an error of the eye after “In which also” (ENΩKAI), with which it might easily be confused (ENΩKAIENΩΧ) or possibly the repeated mention of the Son of Man in Enoch 69:26-29 may have led to the ascription to Christ of Enoch’s preaching to the fallen angels. But, in any case, the reference is to the account of Enoch, chapters 12-16, not to a ministry to the dead.” Edgar J. Goodspeed, Problems of New Testament Translation, Univ. of Chicago Press, 1945

His descent to the underworld is alluded to in the New Testament in 1 Peter 4:6, which states that the "good tidings were proclaimed to the dead". The Catholic Catechism interprets Ephesians 4:9, which states that "[Christ] descended into the lower parts of the earth", as also supporting this interpretation.

I would ask one question out of many I could from this video, when we die (our bodies) and our spirit returns to the one who gave it, then with what body will we be with the Lord in paradise? And when will this body be given? Because logically and biblically, we cannot be disembodied spirits floating around for all eternity in heaven, we must have a body-soul union and have the Spirit in us to be alive.

Wasn't Hel the Viking's goddess ruler of Hel? Divided into Hel and the Misty Hel (aka Niflheim I believe), where the souls of those who did not die gloriously and unafraid in battle reside? Hel could be a pleasant place, although nowhere near as sweet as Valhalla in Asgard, if I remember those sagas correctly, but the Misty Hel was a dark tormenting region of clouds where evil souls were punished by ...dark elves, or something like that. The forces of Hel and the Fire Giants will attack Asgard.

Yes, Hel was a goddess who ruled over Hel, the realm of the dead, just like Hades ruled over Hades in Greek mythology. I imagine the partitioning of Hel into several different realms was caused by exposure either to Greco-Roman mythology or Christianity (or both). Although Wikipedia gives the etymology of "Hel" as being related to "hall," my Old English professor in college said it was related to "hole," giving the conception that hell is in "the heart of the earth" just like Sheol is. The Catholic conception of hell includes limbo, which is sort of the outskirts of hell. Limbo is the place where unbaptized infants go. While it is a pleasant place (like Abraham's bosom), and unbaptized infants go there because they have no personal sin, it is still hell because its inhabitants are deprived of the Beatific Vision. Homer's vision of Hades seems to be a bit aberrant. In the _Odyssey,_ he has Ulysses sail far to the west until he reaches Hades.

I am not a theologian. I do want to get to the bottom of dispensational teaching. It looks like the millennial reign has some self identification inconsistencies.

Wow, finally someone that believes the Bible, believes Jesus, and understands. Matthew 13:34-35 KJVS All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: [35] That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

He could have been speaking to many different spirits during those 3 days, But I personally believe that the 1 Pet. 3 passage gives us a big hint as to who some of them may have specifically been. It specifies that they were spirits from the time of Noah, and building of the ark. If you hold to the supernatural view of Gen 6:1-4 there were some extremely important (to history/mankind’s trajectory) “spirits” that were on the earth during that time; the Sons of God that mated with human women, or “Watchers” according to the Book of First Enoch. My belief is that 1 Pet is referring to those fallen entities, and that He was declaring his permanent victory to them during those 3 days. They did start a cosmic seed war, and attempt to destroy the human race through genetic means - why Noah’s family with “perfect generations” was vital. Which if they were successful would have destroyed the possibility of a human savior. So does make logical sense that He may have wanted to personally deliver the news to them. And if you put any stock in the book of First Enoch, it states that the Watchers were bound in the earth until the final judgment: “And the Lord said unto Michael: 'Go, bind Semjaza and his associates who have united themselves with women so as to have defiled themselves with them in all their uncleanness. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is for ever and ever is consummated.”

They were carried bodily into heaven without dying. Presumably, they're still there in their earthly bodies, and they will return with Christ at His second coming, at which time they will be transformed and put on immortal bodies just like the rest of the saints will.
