Dwarves were more at fault because they wanted the Nauglamir and then lied to their fellow dwarves back home about what happened

It sounds plausible, other sources about dwarves kinda confirms that they sometimes behave this way. Thinking of Thorim Oakenshield with the arkenstone@@eng20h

@@debrickashaw9387 The problem with generalizing typical dwarf behaviour based on Thorin Oakenshield's is that Thorin was already affected by dragon sickness and a lot of what he did can be attributed to it

Before Smaug came along, I am pretty sure I heard that Elves, Dwarves & Men in the neighbourhood of Erebor got on reasonably well, & had good relations again after Dain was made king.

By the 3rd age, I got the impression that they didn't truly *hate* hate each other. They hated each other like you hate your obnoxious neighbor. You can't stand them and want nothing to do with them, but you don't actually want them *dead* or anything.

If we’re being honest, the sindar were right to hate them, I mean, they paid for a service and then were basically robbed because not only did the dwarves take the product as payment, they also never actually delivered, plus they killed the king of the sindar and then raided their kingdom

I'm inclined to put more of the blame on Elves or more specifically the Sindarin Elves. They were the ones who hunted the Petty Dwarves and in the aftermath of the sacking of Doriath, decided to blame all dwarves for anything bad resulting from something dwarves did, even to the point of blaming the Longbeards for the destruction of their own kingdom. But the dwarves have their share of the blame as well. Oh and definitely that "fool of a Took" has to take some blame! 😉

Whenever you're asked why some tragic thing happened in the First or Second Age, you can answer "Fëanor" and be right 95% of the time. The sack of Doriath and the resulting enduring animosity between Sindar and dwarves is a classic example. Manwë should have grabbed the Silmarills and tossed them into the sea as soon as he heard about them, with Fëanor following a moment later.

I'm unsure but were the dwarves right in trying to claim the Nauglamir? If they tried to claim it before accepting the commission I would understand but they only tried to claim it after the work was done and payment was already agreed upon. So, in my eyes that makes them thieves, since they only tried this after the silmarill was attached since by accepting both the commission and payment they recognized the Nauglamir as Thingol's.
@isomeme

Working that long with the Silmaril gave them plenty of time to be overcome with greed for it. So they came up with a pretext for claiming it.

Some lying thieving dwarves were to blame. Shame, that the rest of the dwarves couldn't own up to the treachery of their kinsman. That would have solved the issue. Pride comes before the fall... and the rest is as we say, history.

Why don't the Dwarves hate the Elves for the fact that the city of Nogrod basically got nuked in the War of Wrath? To my knowledge, there's no reference to major Elf populations being killed in the war, nor any mention of the Valar and Vanyar doing anything to save the Dwarves.
@Roshambo920

That’s probably because all of the Elven kingdoms and cities were already destroyed. They were well into the process of genocide on account of Morgoth hating elves more than the other races.

Why The Elves And Dwarves Don't Get Along (From the Tolkien Crackpot Theories page): A recent answer to the Middle-earth test supplied this answer to Question #13: 13. When the Dwarves of beautiful Khazad-Dum built their Western door, why did they allow it to be inscribed with the insulting name of "Moria" ("Black Pit"), a name that would only be earned long years afterwards? They could not understand what Narvi was writing on the door. (After all, Dwarves used Cirth). So it was a practical joke by the Elves. Which leads me to think that the scene before the Gate of Moria should have gone more like this: "They say only: The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. And underneath small and faint is written: I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs. And under that, in little tiny letters, I can just make out: Dwarves are little stunty bowlegged cretins and their women are ugly. And with their poor eyesight and their native stupidity they'll never even be able to read this. Bwah hah hah hah."

I doubt if Celeborn's regard for Dwarves improved much after one of them showed up in Lothlorien and started eyeing up his wife. Legolas: "what was her gift to you?" Gimli: "I asked for a single strand of hair, from her golden head. She gave me three" Legolas: "Nice" Gimli: "Yeah, but Celeborn gave me two black eyes and a broken nose"
