Was I able to get any Pappy Van Winkle's or Buffalo Trace Antique Collection in December 2023?
Also, I'll show you the bottles I got, how I got them, and what I paid for them!
As a bonus, I'll also show you the bottles I passed up on as.... you just can't buy them all!

In December I got a Total Wine store pick of JD SB BP Rye, old Overholt 10 year, Balcones Cataleja, and Still Austin Blue Corn. Your haul was much more epic and I hope the Booker’s stuff is good. For me I can’t justify the pricing.

Nice haul. I bought a Found North 17-year rye on sale from Hi-Time, as I've heard great things about Found North products. Some of the things I stumbled into this December were Old Overholt 10 Year Rye, JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye, JD Twice Barreled Rye, OF Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye and a Baker's 13. No luck on any BTAC this year.

I agree with all of your passes (maybe the Old Forrester Single Barrel was a get, but you already had 2 bottles, so understand the pass). Great pick ups on the new additions even if none were BTAC.

Hey Be Kind! I would love a BTAC or Pappy, but at the same time, I can't complain about my bottle haul and I'll certainly enjoy every single one of these bottles! I now need to learn to be more disciplined as well as it is still way too many bottles to pick up every month. Now with the allocation season over, maybe I'll settle down (probably not). Can’t agree more with treating store employees with respect when going in after seeing a post. Members of my group and others were harassing my store manager because they knew he had BTAC and Pappy come in. He was holding 3 bottles for me and handing others to regular customers that actually shop the store. I was very fortunate to get my first VW Lot B, GTS and a Thomas Handy.

Hey Jim! Yeah, I understand wanting those great bottles, but at the same time, people need to realize that these are businesses and need to make a profit. They make money selling the available spirits and wines, not the allocated bottles and they need to take care of the regulars that keep the lights on. But until the day comes where most great bottles sit on shelves at MSRP (it's not going to happen as the distillers will just control supply), I guess this type of behavior will continue. Only thing I can do is be nice myself and put it on videos and hope it helps. Let me know you like the 2023 GTS and THH! Also, congrats on those great bottles!! I'm jealous as I don't have them 😆. @@WhiskeyBank I still cannot believe I own those bottles. I really like the GTS, I have three batches of the Stagg jr and GTS is definitely a step up. The Handy is my first rye ever and I really enjoying that. The Lot B is definitely an experience. I was not let down by cost to taste at all since I paid what some places charge for a pour. I do buy a lot of everyday shelf bottles too. I’m always trying something new and interesting that peaks my interest. It looks like you are pretty close to me here in CA and showed a lot of the same places my group shops and posts about.

@@jimbird1985 Nice! I heard this year's GTS is a good one. Been trying to get one but with no luck. Someday, I'll need to meet you and learn your secrets on how to obtain a BTAC or a Pappy! I thought I was doing a good job this year until I got nothing . Well, not good enough I guess 😆. I should be thankful for what I am able to get and will enjoy all the bottles I did get in 2023 for sure~ I'm in the South Orange County area and work in the Irvine area. @@WhiskeyBank I should have bought a lottery ticket that day. I’m still rather new to the bourbon hunting. I’ve found not letting fomo get you to be the key. My buddy got me into the OCBS Facebook group. Good resource to learn where people are finding bottles. I find Costco to be a great spot on occasion. I’m in N. Orange County in Buena Park. All I can say is make friends with your liquor managers and store managers.

What an amazing haul! You definitely have some bangers! I hear that Little Book is 🔥! That Stagg SP! I got one and was not disappointed, love the higher proof on them! I do so much hunting and it's actually fun to "pass up" bottles now knowing I can have it in the video instead of only the ones I purchased. You can "steal" the idea for your videos 😂. Thank you so much!! Since I'm very shy in public, I just can't get myself to do a whiskey hunting video, this was my way to trying to let my audience know what I found and what I didn't buy. When I watch other WhiskeyTubers' haul videos, it seemed to me like they just purchased all the bottles they ran into or had a connection. But as I do more and more hunting, I realized they passed up on a lot of bottles as well so I wanted to show that side of the hunting. Hey Michael! Even in California and county like Orange County, we have been only recently been getting an abundance of store picks from various distilleries. I'm hoping this is a continuing trend for us, but also for the smaller communities as if they sit on the shelf here, they will be distributed to other places that will buy them. Our hero here is one helluva trader. A EHT Rye and ER for those Found North Barrels. Solid win for me. For single malts that a Bourbon lover would enjoy I would say try Clynelish 14 year, or Longmorn 16 year. Happy New Year man and keep kicking butt.

Wow ! To even see that many top notch bottles in a single month is crazy ! Out here in the I. E. I see scotch and tequila but not much in the way of decent bourbon. The Fiddler is interesting. I participated in the SLB “secret sample” event and one of the samples was Fiddler Chin music release. It was pretty good but I don’t think It was as good as the Georgia Heartwood I have. Can’t wait for the review. Happy New Year my friend!

Congrats David on that HUGE haul. You've got way more $ in your Whiskey Bank than me. But I got some bottles last week that are all new tries for me. Russell's Reserve 10, Trails End 10, Pikesville Rye, Bulleit 10 and Yellowstone KS bourbon.

Assuming I had the budget to do so I would definitely have gotten the: 1792 12 year (bc that sounds delicious!), Stagg single barrel (it's a Stagg, gotta get it!) and the Russell's Reserve 13 year (one of my friends and his dad like Russell's 10 year a lot). Pass on all the rest simply because I'm not familiar with them at all and I also wouldn't have the budget to risk for them. Thanks for sharing!

that four roses LE was a 199 msrp. i was lucky enough to win the raffle from four roses and got a chance to buy at the distillery. so, double msrp at that store. not terrible considering what other stores are charging…

@@WhiskeyBank I got the booker from 2022. It's called Pinkie. It's high proof. I think near 130. I thought it was decent but hesitated to buy another bottle. I guess I don't like it that much to spend 100. Aged 1792 was also 90-100 and I thought it was more interesting. It has caramel, candy like, and some spice.

But at the same time, having an ORVW in your life is something probably that won't happen very often so choose wisely! 😆 It's a good thing to worry about as I don't have that problem (with no ORVW or any Pappy in my life 😂)

If you are just getting into single malts, that Springbank may be better if you wait and build your palate. It is so nuanced and funky it took me a couple of years to really appreciate it. Congrats you got some great finds!! Cali is the place to find treasure it seems…

I have to admit, for "upper middle" whiskeys (not Pappy or BTACs or older single malts / japanese whiskeys), California is a great place as there are so many drinkers of all types of alcohol (wine, beer, etc.). So I can't complain about my selections or availability. I tried the springbank 10 and 15 and loved both (15 is so much better but unobtainable here). The gift giver told me to open it and let it sit for 3 months as it opens up nicely. But like you said, maybe I'll let it sit for a little until I develop my single malt Palate to fully enjoy it 😆. Hey Mike! I agree with you! As I hunt so often (and have a KZfaq channel to do), I do run into them often and I need to fight my urge to buy it all. But a store pick of Stagg at 137+ proof, I couldn't resist and the bundle wasn't a bad one as I like Michter's and will be happy to drink them. It seems the allocation of Stagg is getting better and I believe you will find TWO at MSRP in 2024!!! Let's Go!!!!! Thank you so much for your view and comment so quickly after the video posted! Great haul! This was my first December as a bourbon enthusiast and the deals and sales got me going, haha. I picked up that Stagg bundle as well and many others like ECBP Pick, OF SBBS, EHT Rye, etcs. But the real surprise was a Rare Breed that I didn't enjoy, now just opened up real nicely. I'm gonna pick another one up soon. Looking forward to the reviews on these.

Hey Danny! Rare Breed is one of my favorite to go bourbons! (along with Knob Creek 12). Just an amazing pour and if I ever need to reset or test my palate before a review, I have a sip of Rare Breed to make sure all is well and I'm not getting anything funky. Hey Dave! Honestly, that is probably the only one I regret not buying from my "passed on" list. The reviews I have seen and read just make it feel so delicious. Oh well, I had to make a $250 decision in 10 minutes and it seems I made the wrong one. Next time. How do you know the batch of rr13? I couldn’t find it in the bottle. I got pretty much your last few hauls. I’m surprised I haven’t seen you during those. Haha

To know the Batch of the RR13, there is a laser code on the bottom back of the bottle that will start with a LL/ and it'll end with a JD, JL, etc. to let you know which batch it is. If you Google "Russell's Reserve 13 batch codes", you'll get a website that will let you what you laser code batch is. Hopefully that helps! I'm sure you saw me in one of those places, but I'm a very shy guy and I don't stand out a ton so you probably never noticed I was even there. If you do ever see me, say hi! Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend at my local Total Wine for $200. Buy or pass?

For me, that is a "hold". It is an "acquired" taste where if you had it before and like "Cigar" blends, you'll love it and it is worth a buy. But if you're not into finished bourbons nor any other "Cigar" blends, it is best to try it before you buy it. I'm not too much into finished bourbons or whiskeys so I have not picked up a bottle due to the price. But I am looking to get a pour or two of the recent batches to see if it's worth a buy now. @@WhiskeyBank I’m in Bakersfield and there are four decent stores. One has about ten store picks (all good) but the really good bottles are usually higher priced. I do have a few really good contacts!
