“Hard to believe that someone can talk so maturely about hifi”. Most interesting statement I have read so far. Its a hobby of big & heavy opinions. I feel most of us come to conclusions too quickly after a small sample of auditions which do not tell the whole story. But at the same time, we react to the audience pull, and often times it feels like the audience doesn’t want to think maturely, people want an easy simple answer. But Hi-Fi is not simple. Thank you for your mature comment sir. I am happy to have you as subscriber. And thank you for sparking a topic for a future video.

Cool. Just ordered an R300 yesterday - there is now a 5 week wait on Amazon ! Part of me is hoping this amp won’t sound better than my Elekit 8600S that cost me $3k with all the upgrades. But… with a 30 day return window from Amazon, I figure I need to give it a try. To me, the Elekit (that btw Herb Reichert raved about) sounds a bit lean to me… I probably like a more colored sound. Waiting for Thomas to post a video of his experiences upgrading the capacitors on the Willsenton - seems like a simple upgrade.

What timing...I received the Willsenton R300 last week and putting 150hr Burn-In and my unit is quite as a church mouse. I have a thread at AudioKarma in which I replaced 3 Caps due to Unnamed brand. Everything in my unit uses UCC, Nichicon and I will be swapping out the "3" Willsenton Films (.22/.33 630V) to Mundorf Supreme Silver/Oil. I would invest in a Tube Tester as they are not very expensive. Sound wise, with the Stock tubes it does SING very well. After 150hrs will be switching to NOS tubes for some Tube Rolling.

WRT two rectifiers. My guess is yes, it is dual mono power supply. When I built my ultimate Steamer/DAC I went all out on power supply. The triode output has two completely separate power supplies. Each have fully separate transformers and their own rectifier followed by film (not electrolytic) caps and chokes. I stopped short of using multiple power cords but do use 8 gauge wire. BTW, I think that the life may be slowly sucking out of my rectifiers so thanks for this video. I need to buy some new 5u4g tubes to benchmark the performance. Great video, even if I'm hoping you're aren't done goofing around now, that would be pity! One rectifier per channel, the reply you got is correct, it's not automatically an indication that an amp is dual mono. Researching pics of the internals on the web it doesn't look to be the case. It already seems incredibly inexpensive as it is. As to system synergy, I agree wholeheartedly with all you said. What I find incredibly difficult is synergy is impossible to predict unless one buys a complete system from a brand that specializes in designing synergistic systems (e.g. Spectral/MIT were among the first audiophile brands in the eighties that practically gave customers no choice, and one would still need to find synergistic speakers to go with it), versus what 99% of audiophiles appear to do, which I refer to as mixing and matching. We (my audiophile buddies and I) have recently struggled pairing Decware's 25th Anniversary amp with, so far, five different speakers. Needless to say, at 2.3 Watts everyone expected high-sensitivity speakers to fare best (we tried 96dB spherical horns, 94dB backloaded horns, 96dB dynamic speakers from a Swiss brand that Steve Deckert said look like the smartest design he's ever seen, 85dB bookshelf speakers by a legendary German designer who specializes in impulse, i.e. phase and time, optimized designs, and my own 91.5dB speakers that follow the same path). Instead, it turns out "Little Ms D", as one of my audiophile buddies calls the amp now (a prima donna?), likes, at least that's my best guess at this point, loudspeakers whose electrical phase show the least anomalies. But again, that's an educated guess that comes after the fact (trying in person). The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
@hificave
@hificave Жыл бұрын
“What I find incredibly difficult is synergy is impossible to predict unless one buys a complete system from a brand..”. I know what you mean. What makes me sad in this hobby, is the scenario where someone can buy a very expensive amplifier that they have waited years of saving their earnings to be able to buy it, and when they finally buy it they plug it in their systems and it makes synergy worse then what they had before. It happens all the time. (I have the T-shirt). There are indicators to look at such as circuit design, brands of parts used, etc, but it requires a vast experience and memory to get there and it is not possible for everyone. But even then, all it takes is a different tiny resistor sometimes and the sound will feel different then what we anticipated. For matching Decware to speakers, I had a hard time once with an amplifier, and the isue was my dac at the time was making the amp run way too lean that I was overlooking great speakers thinking it was a mismatch between speaker and amp. But when I changed the dac, the signature changed and now the amp sounded great with most speakers. Anyway, its complicated. When you experience full blown synergy, even with an entry level system it stops you in your tracks. You become mesmerized by the music.
@LeonFleisherFan
@LeonFleisherFan Жыл бұрын
@@hificave That is an excellent point you're making! The DACs used in those systems were all different (the dCS Delius/Purcell combo, the dCS Vivaldi stack, the Ayon tube DAC, a Boenicke server/DAC prototype, the Lampizator Horizon tube DAC). Of the different amplifier/loudspeaker combinations, the Decware sounded by far the most dynamic, alive and powerful with the Vivaldi ("uninhibited" really, totally belying its wattage, versus more or less dynamically flat/compressed). Needless to say, the different source components synergistically blend into the respective systems with no problems at all. Cables were all different as well, some costing more than the little amp. What strikes me is that one could easily jump to conclusions and think the amp isn't any good, let alone as it's reported to be. Personally, I have a rule that when I hear a component sound great in a system, I'm assuming it has potential, whereas when I hear a bad demo, I'll defer judgment realizing any number of things can go wrong.

I would propose that the idea of synergy can also be thought of as *everything matters*. Everything in audio starts with power supply. You have my attention with the Puritan PSM156; but at $2300 it is a lot more money than I can think about. I have a Pine Tree Audio Iso-Power ($250) with one of their Iso-Braid AC cords ($85 for 5'), and the same cords for my AkitikA PR-102 and GT-104, and the dual voltage linear power supply that is for my Node 2i and Geshelli J2 AKM DAC, and Audiolab CDT600 transport. Playing through my MLTL-11 or MLTL-6 speakers - is like nothing else I have heard in 40+ years. The Pearl Acoustics Sibelius is a mass loaded transmission line, and I think that this is a big part of it. My MLTL-6 speakers use a 6" paper cone woofer (13.8 gram Mms) and they are essentially flat to 32Hz in my room. My working theory is that TL have lower air pressure in the cabinet, and so they work more like open baffle in the midrange.

Hello. I hope that you haven’t already answered the question I am going to ask in this or another one of your videos. If you did, sorry for asking again. You didn’t say too much in this video about the sound of the Willsenton R300 matched with the Lii Audio F15. Here’s what you did say: “Used the Willsenton R300 with this (I think you were referring to the Lii Audio F15 in open baffles), I get it, I really do. Everything he said in his video, true. … This thing is one performing little romantic integrated amplifier.” It sounds like you liked it, but could you give a little bit more information about how this pairing sounds? I recall reading in a comment somewhere, by someone, that this pairing wasn’t ideal. What are your thoughts? I have a clone of a Caintuck Audio Lii15 baffle and am considering pairing it with this amp one day. I really appreciate a lush, warm, dimensional midrange with decay, as well as good dynamic energy and percussive precision (drums, strings, etc.). Super detailed, stringent highs and thumping bass are not my priorities. I would be interested in whether you think this pairing would match my audio preferences. Thanks in advance!👍

Is it not a description of any/every tube? That it is always a slippery road down. (I don't know I am a solid state guy) I have heard PS audio Paul at one point say he swap in new tubes once a year. Just because they degrading slowly and it is not noticable over time and when swapped the jump up to new state is noticeably. But apparently tubes bring something to the table that it's worth inserting slowly sound degrading components in the system. It is not only degrading by some I think it were Paul again that said. That new tubes start it's lifespan sound quality wise not at their full potential and during "burn in"/usage they get after x hours to it's peak performance and then it from there goes downhill. In other words if I understand it correctly they are in a constant flux. Not only that when you're very serious and optimize them so they are matched left and right tube. By buying the service that someone is measuring and matching them for you. So all that said. I wonder that the tubes insert something that solid state can't do, otherwise there should be no reason for their existence 🤣 ? One day maybe I may get the tube experience in my system.. Thanks for your entertaining video!🙏

@@hificave Yes that is synergy but solid state or whatever has also synergy with the other components in the system. So the question is if we have the same amount of synergy in a tube or solid state then what is the difference? A low power solid state class A is probably a very unusual HW. In comparison to all higher powered class A/B or D, H, G solid state amplifiers. Yes thanks to Nelson Pass there is some few. With that said there is not many comparisons between same layout and power class A amplifiers that is tubes or solid state. So it is hard to do comparisons. When they are not overdriven then they say tubes has a more pleasant distortion character than solid state. But again is that with both of them in class A? There is so many variables as you have experienced, just swap out the rectifier. So most likely the amps have not the same of anything to be able to judge them against each other.. 🤔

This Sunkie tech is just trying to sell her own amps and tend to mislead by discouraging buyers on faults in the Wilsenton over her DIY built. @@thomasleong9401 Not true. She is not misleading anyone. She is telling the truth to the public. To my knowledge, she is not producing 300B amps for sale. She has however provided a schematic and bill of materials for free to anyone who wants to build an outstanding 300B amp. There is no fear factor - either a grounding scheme is safe, or not. An amp with large amounts of negative feedback has no chance of sounding 'musical' compared to a properly designed amp using zero negative feedback. It's not rocket science- audio amplifier design has been common knowledge since the 1920's. Any company with the capacity to churn out thousands of these amps and send them around the globe should be expected to produce well-engineered, hi-performance gear at a decent price. Getting transformers with rocks potted into the cans does not equal well-engineered or hi-performance. Some of these companies are taking advantage of people who don't know what a good 'musical' amp sounds like. Some produce decent stuff and Skunkie will give credit where credit is due.

You didn’t mention that the 8 watt amp doesn’t deliver 8 watts, or that the soft start circuit is really delay circuit and adds distortion, or that the rectifier circuit isn’t designed correctly, has a history of killing the rectifier tubes, or that the rectifier circuit has been redesigned at least 3 times by the manufacturer to “fix” the rectifier circuit so it doesn’t kill the rectifier tubes and still adds distortion and still kills the rectifier tubes.
