Did Jephthah sacrifice his daughter or was it completely misunderstood? In this video we cover did Jephthah kill his daughter and we go into the Jephthah daughter scripture in Judges 11 which details everything.
This is a Jephthah daughter commentary but we also cover various scriptures which provide potential additional context to Jephthah's character.
The main text is Judges 11 but we also cover 1 Samuel and Hebrews.
Key Bible text - Judges 11:30-31 "30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering."

The Bible (from Koine Greek ,Hebrew & Aramaic τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía, "the books"[1]) is a collection of sacred texts in Judaism and Christianity. It is a collection of scriptures written at different times by different men in different locations. Jews and Christians consider the books of the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration or an authoritative record of the relationship between God and man.

To me the final nail in the coffin is when it says "and she knew no man". I think that gives it away, that this offering was for the service of the Lord. Upon reading the verses, a literal sacrifice just does not make any sense. Remember the terms "burnt offering" can be spiritual as well. Spiritual sacrifices.

The real question is whether God would actually allow Jephtah to carry out such a sacrifice given his prior pronouncements on human sacrifice. This practice was one of God's motives for having the land "vomit out its inhabitants" as the scripture so graphically puts it. Should Christians even think for a minute that God would allow such an abhorrent act? To teach such a thing is to smear God's character.

Dr. Adam Clarke, and generally sanctioned by Hebrew critics: "I will consecrate it to the Lord, OR I will offer it for a burnt offering;" that is, if it is a thing suitable for a burnt offering, it shall be made one; if fit for the service of God, it shall be consecrated to him." But even if Jephthah had sacrificed his only daughter, Christianity would not be amenable for it - for so rash a deed, resulting from a plain misunderstanding of his own duty. YLT translation also backs this up: "-- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'" (YLT)

Jephthah did not sacrifice his daughter! He made a vow that said whatever comes out the door of my house when I return home it will be the Lord's. I will sacrifice "It" as a burnt offering. A human isn't an IT. Secondly. It says "I will give to the Lord" when Jephthah returned home he was greeted by his daughter which he thought would be an animal. Jephthah knew he couldn't sacrifice is daughter God forbid human sacrifices. So he "Gave his daughter to the Lord" not by sacrificing her. That is why she knew no man and she bewailed her virginity. If you are inferring that the exterminated deserved it then that is sad, unreasonable and unforgiving. In that period all of the sections in that area of the World attacked each other, that was the way. first of all, as you pointed out, god abhors and condemns human sacrifices. second of all, jephtha said "it" and "whatever" meaning, he did not think a human being would be the first to greet him. third of all, in his grief he told his daughter that he had given his word to the lord, which the daughter took as that as you mentioned, like samuel's mother, meant she would be devoted to the service of the lord and could not be married. fourth of all, the written word of god declared "AND she had no relations with a man" towards the end of the story which confirms she lived after jephthah is written to have done to her according to his promise to god. i truly believe that if jephthah did actually intend to burn her daughter when she turned out to be the first to greet him, god would know this, and he could have prevented her from showing up first. or remonstrate jephthah and not help him win over the ammonites.

We will never know what happened but if we look at God's nature....to allow this to happen would be against God's nature so I don't think her father actually killed her. Her father killed/sacrificed the life she could have had of being a mother, wife, ect ect....which to a girl in those times, meant EVERYTHING. So The Offering of her as a burnt sacrifice in this case does not necessarily mean that the father killed his daughter. The sacrifice here is that she will never know a man or be married, or become a wife, hence why she went to mourn as these are the experiences she will never have. Even when God asked Abraham to kill his own son Isaac...God stopped Abraham just in time because God's intention was to test Abraham, it was not to kill Issac. To kill Issac would have gone against the nature of God which God cannot do as "he is not a man that he should lie or change his mind/nature"- numbers 23.19 So....at first glance it may look like she was killed/sacrificed by her father but.....this to me is not true. The true sacrifice was that she would never live her life as intended i.e..get married, be a wife, be a mother ect ect which as we can imagine must have been very painful.

Thanks for taking time to write your opinion of events. I appreciate this is the opposing view of events. Although I do not agree, I do not see this view as baseless. One thing you should consider if you have not though is... God did not tell him to make an offering. And God did not have to stop him to show his disgust with the action. This would mean God has to stop every sinner from sinning, which is not true. Do you see my point Julie?

The symbol on your computer would be a great flag for atheism and science. I'm not sure what makes me more sad, the fact that it's so easy to conclude either one of two things 1. it's just a story, there is no god, this is just a metaphor for 'be careful what you promise, because you might have to pay' 2. this is all true, god agreed on giving a helping hand to murder many more people as a favor, then there's still two options where you're still better of as an atheist if you admit to god that this story was disgusting that you truly hope he is not really like that, a. he is indeed not like that, in which case the atheist is ok, but by definition the believer is doomed. b. he is exactly like that, but then do you really think heaven is going to be forthcoming from such a god, who created us in his image?
