The best part of this episode is the Joker's suit up montage. We have seen Bruce change as much as a magical girl so we know it by heart. Watching Joker sitting at his computer (in a Clark Kent getup no less) then changing into is poorly made Spirit Halloween getup and jump into the Bat-Dune-Buggy to """""""save"""""""" the day is amazing and hilarious

I'm surprised at how much I liked seeing Batman get mocked. He gets called out for being a square every now and again, but this pointed ridiculous satire from Joker was actually really funny, especially in that dopey knockoff outfit. Probably one of my favorite Joker schemes period.

The batman who laughs is a really interesting concept that dies as soon as you try to explore it, answering every question really took away from that nightmarish feel he had, which is sad because that's like the first thing they did with the character

Maybe that's the meta point of all the Dark Metal Universes collapsing as soon as they're created. "What if Batman were an evil hybrid with Barry Allen?" "He'd obsessively try to solve crime and fail at it." "Okay. That's the extent of that idea." (Red skies)

My gripe with the concept of "Batman Who Laughs" as a whole is how shallow it is. It also leans into doing something some writers like to do that I'm not really a fan of. They depict Batman as someone who's able to beat everyone if he ever decided to, which kinda defeats the whole appeal of him being "only human with no superpowers". A major trait that in my opinion makes Batman relatable to an extent and a lasting hero for many people.

The Batman Who Laughs just represents DC and Warner Bros. mentality to this brand for the past ten years perfectly to me. Take a character who is well known for his strong morals and inspiring those around him to do better, make him murderous because of insert reason here, and give him an edgy new design that sits itself perfectly in the middle of edgy and ridiculous. It’s wasn’t even uncommon to see a murderous Batman at the time Batman Who Laughs came out either, there were tons of other stories like it that suffered the same fate. But because all DC and Warner cared about was making any money after all their years of mismanagement, they put it out in the world anyways. Sure they might have reaped some profit as a result, but is it really worth it if you alienate the core audience you’ve built who recognize this crap for what it is? And what is it exactly? No different from those creepypastas from ten years ago that took a beloved childhood or animated IP and painted it black with a “lost episode that made you in alive yourself!!!1!1!1”

7:05 I think this line from Joker also works because... well, it's the *Joker* claiming that Batman needs a Joker. It's just as much the Joker's own ego talking as some intrinsic truth about the Batman/Joker dynamic. I really love this episode. I think my favorite part is the fight between the Joker pretending to be Batman, the poisoned Batman who is telling bad jokes and laughing maniacally... and the Penguin, who has absolutely no idea what's going on, is kind of scared at what's going on, and is just trying to get away with his loot.

It also alludes nicely to the "Emperor Joker" storyline, where the Joker gains reality warping powers. Despite easily overpowering and killing Batman, the Joker finds himself constantly resurrecting the Dark Knight. Superman deduces that the Joker won't/can't completely destroy Batman because opposing Batman is what gives the Joker his "purpose". Or, as the B:TAS Joker put it: "Without Batman, crime has no punchline."

Besides preferring Mark Hamill and the design, I wonder what else people dislike about this take on Joker? Personally, this Joker's design, voice, and fighting style are all reasons for why he's my favorite Joker. Also this Joker seems to have the "healthiest" relationship with Harley in my opinion. To be fair, she was introduced in the more kid-friendly seasons, so they didn't (or couldn't) go too deep into that dynamic.
@WordSarien

The complaint I used to hear was that people didn't like that Joker could fight hand-to-hand at all, let alone be anything resembling a challenge to Batman. BtAS Joker usually resorted to tricks/his gadgets and henchmen to take on Batman. (For the record, this was a complaint they had for the show overall, since Penguin and other villains ended up being the same way.) Bear in mind, this is from back when the show was coming out and I was never one of those people, so I'm repeating what I remember them saying.

I grew to really like this Joker. I do remember the controversy when the show premiered was that they weren't used to the idea that Joker could match Batman in hand-to-hand combat. I like how this version of Joker venom doesn’t literally turn you into the joker. I think the idea of a toxin giving you the exact personality of joker, is quite frankly kind of dumb. it works for some stories like Arkham Knight, but in the case of the Batman who laughs, the idea of the thing finally driving Batman insane not being some traumatic event but instead just being that, he inhaled a couple bad chemicals is so unsatisfying. In this story, it’s clear that it’s more of a nerve agent that’s gonna kill Bruce and Joker just happened to modify it to increase his dopamine levels so he’d be literally dying of laughter. And if it doesn’t manage to kill Bruce, he’ll cause so much trauma on the brain that he may actually fall into madness due to the brain damage It doesn’t cross that line into unbelievably, while still still having the horror that comes with the idea of Joker toxin

To be fair, Batman is mad without the joker anyway. Just because he can do it successfully, doesn't make the fact that he goes out at night dressed as a bat and beats up people and monsters any less insane. From what I understand, the "Last-Laugh" Venom that turns him into the batman who laughs, just fucks with his morality, and maybe his impulse control.

I feel like another kinda similar concept was The Batman Beyond version of the Joker. He has the whole aspect of being the Joker but with all of Batman and Robin's skills while still having a regular Batman in the story for him to fight. The Batman show might have also been an inspiration for the Batman Arkham games, allthough it could be a coincidence. Mainly Joker using Bane's venom in one episode to get beefed up, which eerily resembles Titan Joker in Arkham Asylum. The Batman who laughs worked at first because, intended or not, he felt like a part of Batmans villains - who are all basically extensions of different aspects of Batman himself turned up to 11, or clear opposites. In his case he was an extreme version of the image Bruce wanted to send to criminals while wearing the cowl. An almost mythological feeling being hellbent on chasing whoever he is after until justice is served. While Bruces uses this to incapicates potential evildoers to minimize damage (both for him and said criminals) his dark universe counterpart went above and beyond with the concept until he came across like an eldritch being. That was also part of what broke it all. Instead of letting him stay a warped part of the hero they let the Batman who laughs become a literal eldritch god, which just went overboard.

Not the only time me and my partner noticed something like that while watching the show. Season 4 had Joker getting buff from stealing Bane's venom like the Arkham Asylum final boss fight, and we were like "wait, that's where it came from?! 🤯"

Batman Who Laughs ran out his welcome when he got an ongoing and slowly took over the Apex Lex stuff. That's when I was, "I'm out." Also, Snyder was just spinning his wheels with Last Man on Earth with getting yet another evil Batman story with a clone fighting him (and everyone but Dick/Babs/Duke dying shortly before the clone showing up. Save poor Damian).

I'm happy to see so many people appreciate this episode. This was one of my favs as a kid. It was so memorable from it's creepy imagery, to the moments of Bruce losing himself, to Joker hilariously failing to be like Batman. I love it so much!

There is something about seeing normal looking Batman with this big joker-ish grin that is much more unsettling than Batman's Who Laughs whole design. You see Batman smile like that and you know something is really wrong. Less is more in this case

This was definitely one of my favorite episodes of *The Batman.* Another one I'd recommend is Season 4 Episode 9, "Seconds". I think it's a nice example of a solid episode that *doesn't* use a traditional Batman villain. It always stood out to me for that reason.

I really liked that episode of “The Batman” it was so jarring because Bruce was the only one who was smiling and having emotion, but Batman had nothing, so to see him smile and laughing made you happy, but also not because it was a toxin that was going to kill him. Made for an interesting experience ❤

10:57 I never interpreted it that way. I saw it as Batman curing Joker of his 'batman' disease. Joker is not his jokey self in this episode, he is playing everything completely straight, which is the real eerie part of the episode. Whilst Batman is becoming the Joker, laughing at everything, Joker is becoming more and more like Batman, foiling crimes with deadpan seriousness. At the end Batman has cured himself, but he still needs to 'cure' joker. I guess the smile is an acknowledgment that he needs a Joker, and everything is back as it should be. Apart from the fact that Penguin is now infected with the venom, but I’m sure he'll fix that too.

The idea of Joker juice that turns people evil never sat right with me. It kinda defeats the whole interesting idea behind the Joker - that he was made by 'one bad day.' Joker being full of bad gas is especially silly.

My favourite part of this episode was always, and still is- Joker in a slightly-too-big batman costume, taking himself way too seriously and really leaning into the dark knight persona. It was always funny to me, seeing a character that was so deranged and always smiling/ laughing suddenly flip and be all broody.

Also, _really_ glad to hear you (or anyone, honestly) talk about _The Batman_ after the rocky road it had. Maybe you could do a discussion on some of the series-original villains from the show? The ones from BtAS (Baby Doll, Condiment King, Lock-Up et al) tend to get a lot of focus, but the ones from this show aside from Bennett-Clayface (Temblor, Everywhere Man, D.A.V.E., and Rumor) kinda don't and it would be nice if someone changed that. Or you could do a video about why Maxie Zeus flopped in the comics while his inspiration, King Tut from the Adam West series, was and still is quite popular. Weird that topic hasn't really been discussed, come to think of it.

I'm glad you've started talking about The Batman show. It made me finally give the show a try, and I've been pleasantly surprised by it. Its visual style is unique, and I like how the portray Batman a lot of the times. This episode also reminds me of the mid-2000s novel Batman: Inferno, where Joker steals Batman's gear and terrorizes Gotham. I'm still into the idea of the Batman Who Laughs and think he can be an interesting character, though at this point I think they'd need to rework him somehow. Then again, I feel like him being an alternate universe Batman leans him to being tied into more world threatening events. I do think he was a good leader of the evil fusion Batman league.

"What happened to your arm?" "Cut myself shaving." Tangentially related: some years ago, I was in a bookstore and came across a DC Elseworld book called "Batman I, Joker." It ties to this in that, at the final act, the "Joker" dresses up as Batman. The main story is about a future where people are taken and made to look like various villains, so that "Batman" can hunt them down and kill them.

Good video for a good episode. It straddles the line between funny and creepy. That sequence of Joker suiting up is a funny parody of the Batman suiting up sequence that the show used, he even had a jank version the sonar thing that the show had for toys. But seeing Bruce get more and more giggly was quite disturbing, and he cut it very close with the cure. The ending was rather unsettling, great connection to Killing Joke.

I suspect someone else mentioned this but in the 70s there was a comic where the Joker poisoned Batman with a laughing serum that would eventually kill him like in “the Batman” cartoon, with the twist being that it specifically caused him to laugh at things that were unfunny, creating a dark scene where Bruce can’t stop himself from guffawing at a funeral . The Joker then went about killing every scientist that could cure him, until he held the one person who could save him under a guillotine, while telling the worst jokes imaginable, leaving him in stitches. Batman’s solution? Think about scenes from the Marx bros movies on the logic that actual funny things would be unfunny to him now. A weird silver age style story with surprisingly dark tones to it.

FUN FACT: the episode "The Laughing Bat" is actually based on an old 1966 Batman comic. My stepdad told me about it. The solution in the comic was also in the show. He had to think of something HE finds funny in order to suppress his laughter, because Joker's Toxin made him laugh at things he DIDN'T find funny.

This show went to some messed up places. There was another episode where Hugo Strange unleashed a virus in Gotham that turned the entire city into Zombies. Batman and Robin were fighting to protect the city and develop an antidote. One by one all of Batman's allies succumbed to the virus. It was Finally down to Batman and he was just about to release the antidote when zombie Robin and Batgirl helped him to realize that the only one infected was Batman himself. Strange almost tricked him into unleashing the virus himself.

I have to admit that I wasn't really into The Batman when it aired (it was quite different from BTAS), but I think I'll give it a rewatch. The Laughing Bat is the quintissential episode of The Batman for me. It's got a unique interpretation of the Joker, and one that lands best here. Also, conceptually, Bruce having a laughing fit in a hospital, or the way Jokebat describes his "justice" concerning Mayor West's wife... _dark_ moments for a kids' show to tackle and they don't pull their punches.

Not The Batman 2004, but you looked at microwave man and Ethan Bennet clayface as forgotten villains recently, and I think another adaptation-based villain who could carry on that theme would be Calender Girl from the new Batman adventures! She had such a good episode but I can't remember her ever really making the jump over to comics. Shame since she was so interesting, psychologically. I'd low-key love to see her go up against nightwing for some reason? She's obsessed with looks, he's a certified hottie, but whereas she covets appearance for survival, Dick kind of takes his for granted/seems uncomfortable with the attention. Not to mention her character is about a fear of aging, and he's famous for being the robin who really got to grow up. Sorry to ramble- but yeah! Calendar Girl could be cool :]

Calendar Girl is an alternative interpretation of Calendar Man, an early Silver Age Villain who was intended as a lighthearted gimmick villain who would dress up and commit crimes on specific obscure holidays. I think in the bronze age he was reinvented as a serial killer who would kill people in graphics ways on the holidays instead. I think part of the reason she never made the jump to mainstream comics was that she was already a pretty radically different take on an already very minor villain.

Here’s the thing that justifies giving the Batman who Laughs origin a pass for any weirdness: it’s explicitly stated that he, along with the other evil Batmen from that initial event story, are from Bruce’s nightmares. Which means they follow dream logic and don’t make sense beyond how they convey Bruce’s fears. And that was the initial appeal to the character, that he’s a physical manifestation of an impossible fear. Then they beat the idea like a dead horse and now I never want to see the Batman who laughs ever again.
