@sartanawillpay79773 жыл бұрын
Diplomatic bags are sent between embassies and the home country (and vice versa) and usually contain documents and secret material. To inspect them is a violation of international law. I understood the order to send him in the diplomatic bag to involve dismemberment to get him to fit. Note:technically large duffel bags and even crates can be designated as diplomatic bags, but because Pushkin did not specify a larger container I understand his order to refer to the regular bag for documents.
@SwordmasterKane3 жыл бұрын
Maybe - just maybe - the German version can clarify that, since General Pushkin's order at the end of "Living Daylights" in the German version translates to: "Send him with the next plane to Moscow - as diplomat's ashes." So: No, Koskov did not get away in my opinion. I always had the feeling that they would take him out in the back yard of Whitaker's house and just shoot him there.

It's ambigous at best. There is nothing explicitly stating his fate. If anything, after so many people witnessing his arrest in a foreign country, I always thought that it would've been the most logical to bring him arrested. I mean, 1989 Soviet Union wasn't equally openly homicidal as 1949 Soviet Union, no? In any case, I wouldn't call it ''getting away'', as his most likely fate is a life in prison. Irma Bunt, on the other hand...
@schubertuk10 ай бұрын
@@AlirioAguero2 I agree - it is very ambiguous. I just took the "diplomatic bag" as meaning that Koskov is no longer a VIP, and will be treated to a journey in the hold - before getting whatever punishment is due back home. Otherwise why not just shoot him on the spot?

What happened to Guy Haines? Well, as someone working for the PM, when the 2010 general election brought in a new PM, Haines lost his job. Thus, he was no longer of any use to Quantum and they planned to have him killed because he knew too much to live. Knowing they were out to get him, Haines decided to take the Quantum top brass down with him: he planted a bomb in the same theatre that Quantum were using to have a meeting in during a performance of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. The explosion killed most of the senior members of Quantum and, in the resulting power vacuum, a low-ranking member called Ernst Stavro Blofeld managed to seize power and began the corporate rebranding into Spectre. Surprised you didn’t mention Jaws’ return in the Everything or Nothing video game: After the events of ‘Moonraker’, Jaws realised that, despite what he thought he saw, Dolly didn’t actually have braces. He swore he saw braces on her teeth in Rio, but she insisted she never had any dental work done. They tried to settle down and start a normal life, but Jaws couldn’t let it go: he remained convinced about the braces and was determined to prove it, much to Dolly’s displeasure. Jaws was insistent - after all, it was their common ground, it was what brought them together. Dolly was somewhat offended: she thought he loved her for who she was and her personality, not just for her teeth. Sadly, Jaws became so ensnared in the conspiracy theory that his girlfriend had always worn braces and their removal was some sort of sinister plot that he didn’t notice Dolly had left him until she was already gone. He realised too late that it wasn’t whether her smile had braces or not that was the important thing, it was that she was smiling at him. Alone, despondent, depressed, and with only himself to blame, Jaws went back to his life of crime. He returned to the Villainous Henchman Talent Agency and was subsequently booked for a job by Nikolai Diavolo. Does he survive to the end of EON? Is there a little coda of him getting up and dusting himself off? It’s been a while since I played it, I can’t remember.

For Baron Samedi, I personally saw it as since it's implied that he can't actually die, you have to kind of give him a deserved by default. That, or do what you did with Blofeld and omit him from the list entirely.

In Live and Let Die, I think the henchman playing Baron Samedi died but that guy at the end is the real deal.

7:50 They should have just cut Whittaker out and have Koskov be the sole mastermind. An ending confrontation like Thunderball [Koskov fights Bond and Karla finishes him off] probably was too obvious but would have fit better.

The ending for Thunderball is itself a callback from FRWL (Klebb is shot to death by Tatiana Romanova). The ending for TLD is fine as it is!
@jamesatkinsonja3 жыл бұрын
Though it would be similar to Thunderball, given Koskov betrayed her twice in the film-having Karla pose as the assassin [in a move that would have lead to her death if Bond hadn't gone against orders] and then double cross her in Afghanistan, it feels like a missed opportunity not to have Karla finish off Koskov or have her involved in his capture.

Something that puzzles me about Knick-Knack is that he seeks revenge on Bond at all. He tells Bond during the duel that if Scaramanga dies, he stands to inherit his fortune. So why not just enjoy his inheritance? Sure Scaramanga's island is ruined, but his bank account should still be enormous. A million dollars a hit over 20 years; the little guy should be set.
@jamesatkinsonja3 жыл бұрын
It really feels forced because the previous two films [directed by Guy Hamilton and at least partly written by Tom Mankiewicz] ended with the surviving hench people attacking Bond. Going through the same motions with Nick Nack is half hearted to say the least.

There were plans to bring Jaws back for For Your Eyes Only in which he would marry Dolly, his girlfriend from Moonraker. However due to a change in production personnel and the desire to make the films more down-to-earth, the producers chose not to bring back Jaws altogether

Let me just clear something up about Koskov: he’s 100% screwed. Diplomatic body bag means they’re going to “interrogate” (read: torture) and kill him before the plane lands in Moscow. Instead of getting away, he’s probably got one of the more Brutal villain deaths in the franchise.

I would argue that now that they have full rights it is confirmed that it was him in the original canon. Then again, knowing it's freaking Blofeld he could've managed to survive that fall, as well.

I like to think Irma Bunt died between OHMSS and DAF. Bond was in hot pursuit and Blofeld was just so much more difficult to find. Koskov was probably executed offscreen the question is was it right away or after being sent to Moscow? Whisper I thought was just arrested but...that depends if someone's willing to go there and let him out. Surely he has enough air to survive until someone lets him out. Right? Samedi tbh I always considered deceased with the last shot being nothing more than a joke especially with him looking straight at the camera but it's clearly meant to be taken with good humor regardless it's not like he's ever going to be menacing Bond again.

Guy Haines - Likely arrested or at least relieved from his duty, as we don't see him among the Prime Minister's posey in Skyfall. General Koskov - Arrested. Either sentenced to a life in gulag, or (as some are suggesting), executed off-screen. But he doesn't get away with it either way. Irma Bunt - Yeah, she technically gets away with it, as she is never seen again. I wish if she had been a part of Diamonds are forever. Miss Taro - Arrested Nick Nack - Arrested Whisper - Arrested The Photographer - Gets away with it. Baron Samedi - I don't know what happens to him, actually. He might have faked his own death, might have been resurrected, might have been only a fourth wall nod to the audiences. I'm going with voodoo magic resurrection. If alive (or undead), I'm sure he'll continue to be a local problem, but very contained. Without Kananga, he doesn't have the resourced to go global. Jaws - Gets away with it, but finds love and stops being a threat. Although it's never actually said, I always assumed that he was somewhat mentally disabled, and heavily manipulated by his employers. Out of all these, I only assume that Irma Bunt might present an actual challenge later on.

On a different note let me recommend two films. First, one of the finest espionage films, 1965's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold." Based on John le Carré's 1963 novel it stars Richard Burton and Claire Bloom. It was nominated for six BAFTAs winning four, including Burton for Best British Actor. (I make a distinction between espionage films, which are realistic depictions, and super-spy movies, like the Bond films. FWIW, my favorite Bond film is From Russia with Love.) Second, you should have a look at the original, 1968 Thomas Crown Affair. It is more important in cinema history, because of its innovative editing, has a great score by Michel LeGrand, is not as gimmicky, and Faye Dunaway > Rene Russo.

My head canon for Bond involves four continuities; 1. The Connery Eon films or, if you jettison Thunderball, all the other Connery Eon films, plus NSNA later in his career. That way Bond being in Japan at the start of DAF, and Blofeld having plastic surgery to impersonate Henderson (to presumably have safe passage out of Japan) makes a (kind-of) sense. We know Spectre have, by this point in time, perfected voice-replication technology- so Blofeld having Henderson’s voice as well makes a kind-of in-universe sense. Especially when he retains Pleasance-Blofeld’s fashion sense (beige Nehru jacket, anyone?). 2. Lazenby and Moore as one Bond, played by two actors. By TSWLM it’s clear that Moore’s Bond has been married, and by the pre-titles of FYEO we get confirmation that these mentions relate to the OHMSS timeline, with Tracy’s headstone. Then “Blofeld” appears, with the same neck brace as in the final scene of OHMSS. Starting off with a different continuity also explains how Bond and Blofeld haven’t met before the events of OHMSS - at the start of the film Bond’s only stated as having been tracking Blofeld, with no specific mention of any previous face to face encounters. 3. Dalton and Brosnan. Again, one Bond, played by two actors. Place the pre-titles of Goldeneye before TLD (it’s even stated to take place in ‘86), and the timeline makes sense. Bond’s jaded attitude to the job in ‘87 in TLD could be put down to having supposedly seen Trevelyan killed the year before. After going rogue in LTK he’s eventually brought back into the fold, but had to undergo evaluations, as well as to try and impress the incoming new M. 4. The Craig era. The issue of M appearing in this and the previous continuity isn’t an issue for me. Many of the MI6 regulars, and Felix, have re-appereared/ been recast before. In the second (Moore/Lazenby) continuity it’s entirely possible for Irma Bunt to have either gone to ground completely, or been killed by Bond between OHMSS and LALD. Or maybe even, like the actress herself, just died of natural causes. Whatever happened, she didn’t survive long enough to plead with Bond for her life with the promise of a stainless steel delicatessen.

@superiorgamedude Жыл бұрын
Everyone keeps mentioning how Koskov is obviously dead, but to be fair to Calvin, the movie does not make it clear at all. Just because Pushkin says "in a diplomatic bag," that doesn't mean anything. 75% of people probably don't know what that term means, so they don't immediately think execution. If Pushkin had simply said "in a body bag," that would've made things far more clear. Be honest, did any of you ever hear the term "diplomatic bag" prior to viewing TLD? Because I sure as hell didn't.
@jamesatkinsonja8 ай бұрын
'Diplomatic Bag' does pop up quite a bit in spy fiction as in real life it's how mail is sent between foreign embassies and it's against the law for anyone outside the embassy to open it. Hence in these stories it's used to smuggle documents/objects out of the country the spy is operating in to there superiors.

Calvin, you do know that General Koskov is dead, right? At the end of The Living Daylights Pushkin says "Put him on the next plane to Moscow... In the diplomatic bag!" as in take him outside and execute him for treason. 007 Racing isn't canon, that game is in an alternate continuity.
