A defense of Die Hard as a Christmas movie: Consider another Christmas classic - It's A Wonderful Life. How does Die Hard differ from that movie in story progression? Both start out high, have a dark and hopeless section in the middle, and end triumphant. Neither of them is specifically about Christmas but simply take place during Christmas. It's A Wonderful Life has George Bailey exclaim "Merry Christmas," has people singing a classic holiday tune (Auld Lang Syne), and is about family and friends coming together. Die Hard features someone saying "Merry Christmas," has a carol at the end, and is about families coming together. What's more Christmasy than that?

By the way, the shot at 6:39 was there to show the phones were working in the next building - so Mcclane knew the phones had been deliberately cut where he is. It wasn't just him losing focus randomly looking at a woman in her apartment.

The building is Fox Plaza in Westwood CA at Fox Studios. I used to be a courier for the entertainment industry. I delivered there 2-3 times a week. It wasn't till almost a year after leaving that job that I realized that it was used for this movie. But it had been a lot of years since I saw the movie.

The cigarette comments make me laugh every time. I grew up in the era of block parties and my parents hosted regularly. Us kids ran around playing in a smoke cloud so thick we could barely see each other. Me and my siblings have never smoked and we're all pretty healthy today.

This is a movie I watch every year at Christmas time so of course it's a Christmas movie to me lol. There are a few sequels that are worth watching at some point too. This was Alan Rickman's first movie that went to the theaters. Before that he was a dramatic stage actor only. Pretty awesome for his first. I LOVE the foreshadowing that this movie has - John being barefoot, the building still being under construction etc. Such a well made film.

Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie. It's about a man trying to reunite with his estranged family over Christmas. He has obstacles he must overcome along the way, both internal and external. There is more Christmas music and iconography in this film than Miracle On 34th Street.

Thanks, you're fun to watch. You don't overreact and get dramatic like many other reactors, so when you laugh or look surprised, it seems very real. About people missing with their machineguns: During World War 2, it's estimated that 45 THOUSAND rounds of small arms ammunition was fired for each enemy killed by those guns. That's 1 kill and 44,999 bullets that missed. During the Vietnam war, it's estimated to be 50 thousand per kill. I think bullets per kill ratio in this movie is a lot better than that, so these guys are highly accurate. OK, those numbers are real estimates made by the people who had to buy the bullets and keep the soldiers supplied, so they ought to know. But the details are a little misleading. For example, some bullets hit but only injured the target. Some people who were killed got hit by more than one bullet. But the biggest factor is that most bullets were not fired at the enemy because most machineguns are used for "suppressive fire" which means just shoot a whole lot of bullets in their general direction so they keep their heads down and can't shoot back at us. You don't even need to see them -just shoot close to where you think they are and then they won't shoot back. For example, when the three terrorists were on the roof hunting John McClane, Karl said "No one shoots him but me." so the other two guys where shooting close enough to make John run away, but they were also trying very hard to not hit him. You made a comment about that scene at 11:10 "All of their aims are so bad." Well, the two firing the most bullets were missing on purpose. When Karl finally got to a good spot, John ran through the door making Karl miss.

Kind of hard to maintain the dying hard ambience with that 4th wall segment lol. Great job Evie, hilarious!!

I love that people who get borderline violent when people call die hard a christmas movie can never tell me what makes a christmas movie. They'll die hard on that hill but dont understand that a christmas movie is about family and not snow or presents. Even if it was theres plenty of nose snow and very fast presents.

Regarding Die Hard & Christmas: There was a Canadian literary critic named Northrop Frye who is considered probably the most influential literary theorist of the 20th century. His view of genre is complicated, but it can be boiled down to the idea that a given work is in a genre if fans of that genre recognize genre elements in the work. Yes, this is both circular reasoning and subjective, but that's the point. Genre is not an absolute. Your definition of what it means to be a Christmas movie or a science fiction novel or a superhero comic will be different than someone else's because you've read and studied and watched different things in the past. So it's not a question of whether Die Hard is or isn't a Christmas film in some objective definition, just whether it fits in with what you think a Christmas movie should be.

This really is a Christmas, no doubt about it! Before Bruce Willis was cast as John McClane, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Charles Bronson, Jeff Bridges, Nick Nolte, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Charlie Sheen, Paul Newman, and Robert DeNiro were considered for the role.

You really thought Karl was dead. So did we all. Here's why he wasn't. John never really killed him. He just wrapped that chain around his neck and hung him from the ceiling. Getting "hanged" like that can take about 4-5 minutes to die from asphyxiation, though some brain damage can begin occurring sooner than that. Luckily for Karl, that ceiling he was dangling from collapsed when the roof exploded, and it wasn't 4-5 minutes. It was more like 2 minutes. So he lived. He fell to the floor, and it took him a while to get free from the chains and debris. Then he made his way down and finally found the guy who killed his brother, but was dumb enough to yell before he fired, tipping everybody off. Maybe that was the brain damage doing the yelling. Sgt. Al Powell fired the shot that finally put Karl down. Side note: Karl was played by Alexander Godunov, a russian ballet dancer and member of the Bolshoi Ballet. He also played a very believable Amish man in the Harrison Ford movie, Witness.

It isn't Christmas time until Hans Gruber falls off the Natomic building. It's a Wonderful Life is definitely no Christmas movie because no mention of Christmas until the last 20 to 30 minutes. John wasn't arrogant. He just doesn't take crap, that's all but yes he did toy with them.

After the Vietnam War they tallied the amount of ammunition expended and the number of confirmed kills. From the math it appears that at least 100,000 rounds of ammunition were expended to each kill.

At the Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis, the debate over Die Hard being a Christmas movie was settled by Bruce himself when he said that "Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. Its god-damned Bruce Willis Movie!" Personally I prefer the 1968 movie "Oliver!", and the "10th Anniversary concert of Les Miserables" as my annual Christmas movies. OTOH my favorite Christmas song is Weird Al Yankovic's "Christmas at Ground Zero".

One final thought because I don't think you picked up on it... despite the movie not having any overt patriotic elements, the American right wing absolutely adores Die Hard. It definitely plays into all those American cowboy stereotypes that Hans Gruber was talking about, the lone hero against a passel of enemies, the American versus the foreigners, rescuing the damsel in distress, etc. It's a very American movie, if that makes sense. Even the dingbats running things like Dwayne T. Robinson play into the American suspicion that the people in charge didn't get there by being smart but by being good ass-kissers.

Die Hard is yes a Christmas movie 🍿 Alot of people debate it but it's a movie that backdrop takes place during Christmas. Now Die Hard 2 there's no question within the first 10 minutes you know it's a Holiday movie at least and it's a good follow up. Die Hard with A Vengeance is the standout sequel and one of the best sequels made .The Fourth movie is well a comedy show for what McLane goes through but it's fun and has Michael Bay style action. The fifth film we don't talk about that one it's just awful.

Have you ever fired a gun? I've been shooting guns since I was a kid. (Texas) It takes YEARS to be able to shoot accurately and CONSISTENTLY while standing STILL, much less when you AND your target are moving. Each shot is worse than the one before it because the muzzle lifts up and you have to reacquire your target. Machine guns are not much better than handguns, because the machine gun kinda jostles against your steady aim. It can be done, but most people have jobs and not the time nor the money (ammo, range fees) to get in the kinda practice you need. It's more common in people who have been shooting when young, if they have a ranch or backyard creek or something, because kids have more time to screw around for hours at a time. Movies usually make it look so easy. But. It''s not.

The debate about whether this is a "Christmas Movie" is a joke. Yeah, some people get heated about it, but deep down, we all know what the "Christmas Movie" genre is. This ain't it. Still, I have watched this and Lethal Weapon every Christmas since I bought them in the 90s. It's a 3 decades old family tradition in my house. In fact, once my kids all grew up and weren't really interested in Rudolph or Frosty anymore, we quit those movies and kept Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.

I don't smoke and think it should be limited but some laws go too far IMHO. While not fully enforced, the ban in my area says illegal less than 50ft from any public property or bussiness or property open to the public. As written my house is illegal to smoke in. 53ft lot with road on one side and a church on the other. FL has a like law and have ticketed drivers who smoke because they are on public property while driving on any public road. I don't want exposed to smoke but think you should be free if on your property or in your car. Hollywood now mostly bans smoking in film and butchers some iconic roles because of it. You can't picture some without thier vice like Gen. McArthur or S. Holms with their iconic pipes.

So, you admit you did in fact... feel........ good. It was family, it was the bad side, it was the good side. It was good beats bad, it was exactly what everyone wants. And... well, he DID get shot. And his feet were bleeding all over the place for a while. And, you may not have noticed that there was christmas music in a minor key all throughout, and then... Beethoven's masterpiece at the end. I guess my question would be... terroristic robbery can't occur... at christmas? Or, on the opposite end, can lots of giving not occur during the rest of the year? I'd say the fact that they play nonstop christmas music in minor keys should tell you this is a christmas movie. Its not your typical christmas movie, but it IS a christmas movie.

Evie, the 2nd of the 5 Die Hard movies also happens at Christmas. And one of the other movie BAD GUYS is Hans' brother. All 5 movies are very good. I have sat with dates watching all of them as most men love all of them. I have grown to love them after so many times seeing them even though the guys always ask (TELL) me to get them food and beers so they can keep watching. I have no trouble being waitress though as I grew up serving my father and 4 brothers before and after my mother was in poor health when I was 9 and passed when I was 14. 👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠💓💓
