I appreciate the significant research this presentation represents, but as someone who has spent a lot of time with the Dresden MS, this does nothing to diminish my love for that manual. I think that the appearance of Fechtbuch represented an emerging genre that required technical knowledge of physical movement, a fairly steep task considering the times. The gaps, errors, and mysteries are part of what keeps me fascinated. Thank you for sharing this research.

Nicely done. "...the Ringeck manuscript is an outstandingly lousy manuscript..." I agree with you if the goal of the scribe was to pass on a complete explanation of the "Lichtenauer tradition" to a culture 700 years into the future for whom the concept of sword in combat was a completely foreign idea. Of course, this was not the goal and we have no idea what the expectations for it were nor the context of its creation. Presumably it was quite expensive to produce so someone must have thought the efforts worthwhile.

Who care? Pick up a long sword and learn how to use it. All this tedious stuff has nothing to do with the martial arts at all. So... So what? Who cares?
