"...yeah, but you havent thought about the rear end cooling, the u joints, the flex in the springs..." YES. YES I HAVE. Ever since that one time I overloaded the tongue of an 8" lifted 1/2 ton and trashed the suspension on my "fun" truck towing in the mountains. Lol, trust me, when they start bouncing around and hitting every crack like it's a railroad track, they'll consider more than transmission cooling. Thanks for the video!

The high horsepower tunes are for intermittent operation when supported by stock systems. If you want to tow with higher horsepower, then it makes sense that you have to upgrade not only the turbo and tunning but also the trans, oil cooling for engine and transmission and may add oil cooling for the rear differential.

Great info. I haven’t bought your tuning program for my Colorado yet but I’m here because I’ve been watching all your videos. It’s not as relevant to your tuning but I have a 1968 M35 “deuce and a half” with the big continental LDT465 that has a teeny tiny Honda sized “C” Whistler turbo. They didn’t even bother to put any form of boost control on this thing. Turbo goes straight into the intake without so much as an intercooler or a waste gate. Anyway, I run a giant aviation fuel pump in the tank and I run on straight un-thinned used motor oil as fuel that the fuel pump manages to ram through 3 filters (one of which is heated by coolant to thin and pre-heat the cold oil). I have the injectors re-popped to 3500 psi (these things don’t spray, they just shoot a stream through 2 giant pencil lead sized holes). I also have the old American Bosch injection pump ramped up to its max capacity and the FDC bypassed. All of this happens with only 14psi from the tiny maxed out turbo. To say it generates a little heat when pulling a hill at low RPM would be a gross understatement. It has been set up this way for years and takes a great deal of control to keep the pistons from melting into the oil pan. The point is that you can have it when you need it for a short duration but you have to use restraint not to cook it. It makes way more power than it was ever designed for. EGTs can reach 1800 degrees or more and aluminum melts at 1600 degrees. It’s like putting a torch to aluminum. That flame is much hotter than the melting point but you have a finite amount of time before the metal itself reaches it critical temp. That’s where knowledge of your equipment and an eye on your gauges is very important.

You also shouldn’t floor it while towing. It’s hard on the clutches. Should always roll into power when towing.

Pulled my 21ft boat 2 hours each way with stock 6.0l no studs in Xtreeme x . Had cat delete. Watched my egt coolant and oil temp. I just drove it normal . Pulled great.

If you haven’t already found it Banks Power has an oil cooler that is an upgrade unit that has the port for oil temp or oil pressure built into it. It also is more efficient at cooling the engine oil.

Where is the best spot to put a temp probe for oil temp on an 01-06 duramax? I'm so glad you guys brought this up, I was just running this through my mind, I want to tow on stage 4 120hp cause it tows so nice, but didn't know if it was safe.I have manual egt gauge and edge cts2 to monitor all my temps religiously, just don't know what oil temp is doing which makes me nervous on them hot days. I would like to know where to put a probe so I can add it to my gauges. Thanks for doing these awesome help videos!

A lot of things guys over look is over the years ur intercooler and radiator can become block with dirt it's a good idea to blow them out with compressed air.

When I drove over the road in the 80s and 90s, with the manual pump Cats and Cummins and Detroits and non synthetic oil, we never got engine oil temp over 240. Sort of a rule of thumb was 20 degrees higher than water temp. Nowadays with fully synthetic oil I think hotter oil is safer.

Problem is people want to put 20k plus behind a 2500 and pass a Ferrari going up vail and through Eisenhower then 5 minutes into it the engine be it Duramax Cummins or power stroke goes into yard sale mode and they bitch the tuners out

I’ve got a question about L5P tuning. I’ve got a 2018 GMC 2500, and would really like to get your tuning for it vs one of the two popular box tuners. I understand the advantage of the SOTF, but I’m not the type to switch back and forth a lot. I don’t beat on my truck or tow on a regular basis. When I do, it’s usually a relatively light snowmobile trailer (that tows like you’re always driving into the wind) or landscaping trailer. At some point, I’ll have another boat in the 25’-30’ range that may hover around the 10k range. Most of those tows would be short local trips with an occasional trip from Ohio to Florida, etc. Stock tire size now, but will be moving to the 34” range soon. I am inclined to choose a single tune, but am wondering if by what my situation is/will be, if the “Light Tow” tune is appropriate. I’ve got no desire for kill mode; just looking for more response, grunt, and quicker up/downshifts.

I have a deleted 2011 lml with a lift pump. I tow on a 50hp h&s town tune my 29' toy hauler that weighs around 10k. The truck does absolutely great in the new England mountains. I just wish it would down shift, it just wants pull every grade in overdrive. I've recently started to manual shift to keep the rpms up. Weather I manual shift or pull in overdrive I never have scene the engine temperature move what so ever even on the hottest day.

@@mattreb5748 We expect the trans temps to reach about 100 degrees F over ambient air temp. So if you're in a warmer region and it hits 185 in town, I would not have much concern.

Sorry, that feature is based off of a factory EGT probe that is post turbo which the older trucks do not have.

Hey guys I have your six speed conversion for my 03 Lb7 and I’m having issues with the tune flaring shifts when shifting into 6th under load and shifting spastically, essentially searching for gears when you lug it. Truck and built trans did not do this before the conversion was installed. I try’d calling and getting a revised tune for it but never heard back. Also for egts through my current tunes from a different company I literally can’t tow in any other tune then 1, my egts sky rocket other wise. I tow a 35’ goose neck with a gross weight of 16k pounds when loaded. If you would get back to me I’d like to discuss tuning and getting this tcm reflashed. Thanks!

I tow a 30ft 5th wheel 7,000lbs my 350ci gas can not pull it I need more power should I look for a diesel I like to tow max 80mph at the slow I want 60mph my 350ci tow at 30mph max up hill it is to slow

@Duramaxtuner What if you decided to tow with the sport-Econ tune? The reason I am asking is not to hotdog but for mpg as the sport tune holds gears longer before downshift. While unloaded I see 3-6mpg difference from sport compared to Tow tune. Thanx in advance.

All the of same advice would apply for the Sport Econ tune and Race tune. You really want to watch your temperatures if you are going to do it.

Is there some kind of rule in the diesel world where even if you know the difference (like I'm sure you guys do) between actual twin turbos and compound turbos you still say twin turbo like they're interchangeable term? Same for RPM vs. RPMS. Firepunk does this in their videos too and so does everyone on the forums.

Do you recommend monitoring oil temp before or after the stock oil cooler on an LMM? I've seen you mention oil temp in a few videos. Do you have a specific kit or sensor that you sell and/or could recommend? I have an Edge Insight CS.

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9. I’m running 34” tires on 20x10 wheels. It has a S&B cold air intake S&B intake horn 5” exhaust with Magnaflow muffler and no cat It has a smarty jr running on the 100hp tune My question is, can I run it in tow haul mode to help offset the 100hp tune to help cool and keep it safe to tow around 5k - 10k pounds?

I would avoid that with a box tuner. If you had some custom tuning on there it may be a different story. Tow/Haul Mode triggers a different shift pattern and converter lockup strategy, it is not going to directly help keep your truck safe while towing with a bigger tune.

Awesome video guys!! Got an 07 LBZ running a 2020 L5P oil cooler. Tuning byDanville Performance. Towing my 5th wheel camper I never see above 200 degrees engine oil sustained. Max I’ve seen was 210 at the top of a long steep hill quickly cooled back down at the top. Running mishimoto race t-stats and a Hayden 2886 fan clutch to help keep everything in check! It’s a tow machine now!! Haven’t played with lvl 5 tho 😂😂

I have a 17 Powerstroke and want to do a compound turbo and an EGR delete for towing a 16k 5th wheel while keeping the DPF intact. Do you guys offer tuning for this configuration? And do you recommend upgrades to trans and cooling systems? If you do are there American made upgrades available?

Sorry, we would not be able to tune a truck with the EGR deleted. The trans and cooling system seems to be really solid from the factory.

Towing is all about Torque not HP. Every truck has a sweet spot. Tow in your torque curve. I’m a heavy haul driver and I see people make the mistake at trying to haul their camper at 80mph. It’s better to tow lower speed. My 2019 Pete torque is 2050 at only 1150 RPM

We want to see trans temps around 100 degrees over ambient. So if your 140 - 150 over I would guess something is cooked.

Aren't cummins uprated in pickups due to lower gvrw? I grossed 47k with a 3/4 ton once. Short trip gravel roads, 14 bales wet alfalfa. Leveled out just fine with overload airbags. I actually would go down on the hp as the weight goes up and you really push it. Better off keeping temps down and the engine healthy so you can have fun when you dont have a load. Not like you're gonna win any races pulling with a trailer on anyways.

Totally agree, but we just have so many customers asking us about towing in the race tune we thought we just make a video about it. If you check out our tuners, all of the Heavy Tow tunes are much lower in HP.

Lol If you need 500 or 600 for towing , you might need a semi 🤘😉✅🤦‍♂️ . People don’t remember when these trucks first come out they would pull anything on stock settings !! Now we gotta do it 0-100 in 4 seconds. I don’t get it 😂

I agree but it’s a lot of fun to beet a belly scratcher sowing machine at a red light pulling a big trailer. Or having to put it in 4x4 to leave a red light when towing.

Sometimes it is just a whole lot better to slow down. One horsepower is 550 foot pounds per second. You can calculate horsepower for grades easily using total weight and how fast you are raising that total weight going up the grade. The weight raising will far overshadow the drag forces. Sometimes it is just better to tag along with a big semi at lower speed and downshifting the gear. My older Ram 6.7 Cummins makes 130 retarding horsepower with the exhaust brake. I tow with a total weight of truck and trailer at 25000 pounds. I can go down an 8% grade at 30 mph without touching the brakes. So that means if I climb that hill at 30 mph I am using a bit more than that say 150 hp. And if I try to go 60 up that hill I will be using 300+ hp as windage goes up. Probably near 350 hp.

"Upgraded oil cooling system" is easy, pour in highest technology lubrication. 99% of people with any machine using oil do not have a Clue what it is, because manufacturers and shops making money off of failed lubrication or early worn out parts they get to profit from replacing turn their nose at it and "hater" talk on it rather than utilizing it. And as a "Tuner", lower EGT, Engine and Trans temps allow you to make better performing tunes than your competitors with better pushing of the timing tables.

Another question, I was thinking of putting an lb7 dmax store arctic trans cooler and lines on my 06 lbz, just for the sake of having the cooler behind the grill where It can get direct airflow while moving and have the fan draw air across it when in traffic instead of behind the bumper away from direct airflow like the factory smaller cooler. What would you guys say about a mod like this, yay or neh, what are your thoughts?

Question, bone stock 2017 L5P towing has sustained EGT'S of 1475-1500 degrees. The ECM doesn't start to de-rate the engine until the EGT'S go beyond 1507 degrees. So is the information of 1350 degrees sustained still accurate? I understand 1350 on an older cummins or 7.3L ford thats a great number to live bye.

Are you measuring the L5P EGTs on the manifold or post turbo?

There is an EGT PID that I assumed was near the manifold. I saw 1475 all the time while stock on my Edge in my L5P while towing. I have since switched to the Banks setup, and he starts pulling power I believe at 1450 as part of his safety setup. That plugs in and is using the stock EGT sensor. Nice video btw. I think our nature as humans is to defy our limitations, which is probably why the aftermarket auto/truck market does almost $300 Billion a year.

Duramaxtuner I watch EGT1 in the engine and EGT5 in the DPF. I believe in one of your videos you said to make sure the exhaust is warm before you beat on it to reduce how fast the DPF fills up.

500hp towing issues depend on all of the mods you have done to your truck. If you have upgraded your transmission, larger or compound turbos, upgraded intercooler, upgraded (oversized) injectors, upgraded oil cooler, gears, etc, then 500 hp towing should not be an issue at all. 1,000hp might be a different story

I get that new diesel engines are screwed from the factory but I will give you a little tip: when the next crash hits, I go on a shopping spree (like I did in the last 2) and buy rat-bagged diesels (they are very easy to spot) for pennies on the dollar and re-sell them to ignorant ego maniacs who pay triple what I buy them for because they have “ a tune”. I pay double for bone stock diesels that haven’t had the shit ran out them from people who just need to blaze down the highway at a cool 80mph with their trailers. All my diesels (especially my 06 Cummins) are bone stock and pull my car haulers and holiday trailer just fine and that IS IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS!!!! So keep spending the money that you probably don’t have, on your deprecated asset, that you will never see a penny of in return......I will be waiting. BTW what’s the going rate on a transmission now? About $5000-$8000? 😂😂😂 ✌️

Look, I don’t care what people want to do to their trucks, what I really dislike is cruising to my vacation property with my cruise set at 5 over and passed on a double solid line going into a corner by a douchebag driving a diesel (take your pick which brand), screaming by at 80 or 90 with screaming loud exhaust, huge rims, jacked up with wheel spacers and blue halo headlamps (don’t forget the black tinted windows that really complete the douche package).....been to a few collisions caused by them too! My point in very simple, if you’re doing it to drag race your truck at the track on the weekend go nuts. If your doing it so you can drive like an asshole, guess what, that makes you an asshole. I regularly travel through mountain passes and aside from the need to pass once in a while, I see no need to do anything to my truck. I set my cruise and it works just fine. Generally, the people who want 500 hp want it to drive like assholes (generally).....this “I need it for pulling” bs is exactly that.... let’s be honest Steve, it so people can drive like shitheads.
