Seeing you cut up these trees reminded me of a summer long ago when my Dad and I "thinned the herd" of pine trees in our front yard. We topped out several of the trees and removed a couple more including digging out the roots-- no stumps to mess with! We were working on the last big tree which was right in front of the house, so we were taking it down from the top down. Dad climbed the tree with his trusty chainsaw, and he cut the top out and took off the limbs on the way down. There was one particularly large limb that had a tangent directly to our picture window in the living room, so Dad figured that we needed to belay this one down. He tied a rope to the limb with the rope going over a stub of the limb above it, and I took the other end of the rope and tied it around my chest under my arms to act as an anchor. We underestimated the size of the limb... when Dad cut the limb, as it fell it yanked me about 6 feet into the air-- landing me (a strapping 200 pound young guy) in the pile of cut brush! As he saw that I was all right, he almost fell out of the tree laughing! But the window was safe, and the rest of the tree came down and out as planned.

@@jesusisGod1434 Georgeh (below) is exactly right! We lived in Daphne, Alabama (across the bay from Mobile) which has received its' fair share of hurricane damage over the years. The taller the tree is, the more wind it gets hit with, and the more damage that is done to it. After hurricane Frederic in 1979 we ended up with a pile of limbs and debris that stretched from one end of the ditch in front of the house to the other about 6 feet tall... but no downed trees. At the other end of our street, our grandparent's house had a 200 year old oak blown down which fell across the road blocking traffic, but also had the water main for the street suspended 10 feet in the air in the trees' roots! We were without power for 2 weeks, but also without water for 5 days! One of my uncles, armed with his trusty chainsaw, cut a "tunnel" through the tree big enough for a car to pass through... receiving many bee stings from a hive located high in the trunk!

Matt, Please before cutting the heavy leaning tree, take a short and easy to work with chain that has a hook on one end or commonly called a snap chain, and do a couple wraps above the planned cutting point. Wrap it a couple times and then hook the chain so its fairly snug as it doesn't have to be tight. When the blade of the saw hits the sap side of the tree, it just may split and that snap chain will do wonders as it holds the tree together long enough for you to get it down. Just don't let the loose end of chain hit your saw blade and then feel a lot safer cutting them down. We did it with trees just standing as spring and fall, the sap runs and those hardwoods are famous for splitting and killing tree faller.

You're right about the bobcat, especially with that grappler (or whatever you call it). It's a huge time and back saver. I use my backhoe for clearing up fallen trees, but in most cases, you have to cut it up into manageable lengths and manually load it into the front bucket. Back breaking!

So glad I watched your video! I spent most of my life in the city. A few years ago I bought a small 35 acre farm that has some woodlands. When a tree falls on its own I cut it up for firewood. And I'm forever getting my chainsaw pinched in the tree when I'm cutting it up. 🤣 When I saw (pun intended) that you make a small undercut before you cut through the tree and you avoid pinching your saw in the cut I jumped off the couch and high fived you 🤚! Thanks, Matt! So glad your video came in my feed.

As someone who has to do this far too often, my advice is also to carry extra saw(s). No matter what you do, at some point you'll end up with the bar jammed in a cut.

@Bill Telfer That works too, especially if you have space/weight/budget restraints. We have the extra saws here anyway -- not hard to put extras in the ute before heading off for cleanup duty.

We got 5 inches of rain north of Harrisburg the other day. I'm pretty high up being that the Appalachian Trail is in my backyard, but the creek on my property washed out my driveway. This thing is barely a trickle in August usually. This year though it always had a decent flow, but after 6 days of rain then the 5 inches in like 12 hours, it let loose. This is only the second time it spilled over, but man what a mess.

Another interesting video from diesel creek..but in reality it could've been a real disaster if these trees would've caused any damage to your building or your equipment. So the lessons here is do your best to get rid of any trees that is a potential danger of falling and causing any damage. Keep up the good work Matt.

Good video as always. However I do feel the need to comment about your statement on ants. Individual ant colonies in inapppropriate places, like your house or carpenter ants in your houses framing and so on, yeah, they are annoying and should be removed. However ants in the wild serve a vital and needed purpose. They take surface organic materials, like that tree and transfer them down into the soil via their nests. Then between excess material from their nests and their own waste they enrich the soil. Ants also massively aerate the soil. They are natural tillers. Any place where you see lots of plants growing without human aeration has active ant colonies. They also disperse seeds. They are also one of the most significant predators of other animals that we consider pests, Ants eat large amounts of ticks, termites and stinkbugs among many others. They will even gang up on scorpions and spiders, keeping those populations under control.

chinesium is made from all the garbage we sent over there that then gets recycled into whatever alloy comes out of a vat. so yeah it's really inconsistent

honestly... when it comes to long lasting equipment like a Stihl chainsaw, I wouldn't have spared the 60$ difference to the original rebuild kit. And yes, I understand the Stihl-kit was only the top end. Chinese option = whole motor. but still. ;-) And I'm really, really surprised that a Stihl dealership person recommended you a chinese option. Because one of the most famous chinese trademark-infringement cases of the last 20 years - was Stihl. They outright copied the chainsaws and Stihl had no handle on any patent-protection. 2:48 And that's why it worked so flawlessly, like OEM. lol Anyway. big fan. love your videos and your humor

Its great to see someone using a chainsaw properly, with the correct technique for a change. So often on youtube there's someone who hasn't a clue how to use a chainsaw and are just as likely to cut themselves as cut some timber. Also, good to see a sharp chain instead of the usual dull chain and the user doing a sawing action back and forward....with a chainsaw! Keep up the good work!

I l or tree clean up. Working at a 180 acre cemetery any windy storm we always get trees, a lot being 100 year old maples being gigantic and idk what it is but I love the clean up process. So this video was therapeutic to me! Awesome video man! Grapple buckets are worth their weight in gold. Love ours

Early in the 20th century roads were made of logs. You should try that on some of the muddier section of your drive.

I'm also a man of stihl and have a ms440 mag that's built so we both like the 044/440. I'm actually a saw guy in general and have 9 stihl's/ huskys. My go-to for that small stuff you're cutting is usually one of my built 026's w/ 18" bar. You should grab yourself a max flow filter setup and a dual port muffler for the 044 to start followed by a carb tune afterwards. Two mods that really wake them up. Your cut times will go down just from the muffler mod, not to mention the great sound. You can build your own via brazing like I have and make it a work of art too. The cylinders are great these days in the aftermarket. I run a big bore, meteor piston and Caber rings on mine. Best places for parts are probably h.l. supply, farmertec, or sawagain. No affiliation with any other than I buy most of the parts for my fleet and the customers saws I build and repair. You'd be amazed at how well these saws respond to some timing advance and port work as well. That poplar is shit wood but it burns okay. I remember doing a massive lot clearing on a hillside lot where the client was going to actually relocate their cabin to this large lot overlooking this lake up here in NY. We had so many poplar rounds we were giving away massive piles to any of the lake residents that wanted it. What a job that was. My crew was out there for like a week and a half on that job! I do watch anything you post because you are a feller like me and you remind me of a very good friend of mine. He is very light hearted and can make being under a tractor chin deep in grease and grime on a 110 degree Texas day seem fun. Ill share a few things that I know and a few things Im thinking. My opinion is that maple wood is probably the best cheap smoking wood you can find, mild deep flavor good for beef, venison, and bird! Im thinking that you need 2 pieces of equipment since you are going to build a home at some point. Because you have an abundance of straight wood, you need a saw mill and a firewood processor! Both would produce money on the fly or needed commodities for your future builds. Even if your type of wood isnt good enough for stick framing it is good enough for shelving and what nots in your shops and shipping containers. Keep up the good content and Ill keep waiting to watch it! Later.

That heat exchanger was likely plumbed into the plant's cold water supply or an existing cooling plant. If you used one on an irrigation well you'd use discharge water from the pump. My dad's old Moline irrigation engines used that cooling method. Didn't have to worry about birds taking up residence in a radiator.

It was exciting for me . I once commented on mr camarata’s video when he was using his skid steer , that I wish I had a good excuse to buy one. He replied that I didn’t need one , just do it . I just love the versatility they have for such a small and compact machine . So glad nothing was broken .
