Haemochromatosis is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb excess iron from the diet. It can lead to severe health problems when the excess iron accumulates in vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, joints, and heart.
SYMPTOMS typically start between ages 30-40 and include tiredness, weakness, headaches, joint pain, and sometimes weight loss. Some may have no symptoms for a long time.
Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition that affects how your body absorbs iron from the food you eat.
Hemochromatosis has no cure, but regular venesection or blood removal can reduce iron levels and the risk of damage.
Hemochromatosis can't be treated by diet alone. Blood removal or venesections are the primary treatment. However, some dietary changes can help:
1. The amount of iron in your food
2. How easy or difficult is it for your body to absorb that iron
3. Adding in foods that reduce iron absorption
4. Avoiding or limiting foods that increase iron absorption.
Iron is an essential nutrient, so you don't need to eliminate all iron-rich foods if you have haemochromatosis. However, it's best to limit your consumption of high-iron foods.
Iron in meat is easily absorbed, whereas iron in plant-based foods is tougher for the body to absorb. People with haemochromatosis should eat more foods with non-haem iron.
Inhibitors are foods that reduce iron absorption. They work by binding to or competing with iron. Common inhibitors are phytates (found in nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, and whole grains), polyphenols (found in tea and coffee), calcium-rich foods, dietary fibre and oxalates (in green leafy veggies, almonds, beetroot, berries, soy foods, and rhubarb).
Enhancers increase the amount of iron your body absorbs. It is best to avoid eating these foods or nutrients when you are eating foods high in iron. Enhancers include fructose (found mainly in fruit juices), alcohol, vitamin C and supplements.
Alcohol is a concern for those with hemochromatosis as it's an enhancer that increases iron absorption. It's worth noting that alcohol is a source of iron. Cider, in particular, is very high in iron.
If you have hemochromatosis and become pregnant, inform your medical staff. Pregnancy changes how your body handles iron, so consult your doctor for individual advice.
Don't take iron supplements; if you are taking a multivitamin, check that it doesn't contain iron; this can actually be quite difficult if you are a female, as most will have iron in them.

I am 79 and have only been diagnosed with this in April of this year. My only symptoms have been my liver readings in blood tests, and they kept asking if I was a heavy drinker, which I have never been as it has never agreed with me. I was a blood doner for a few years in my thirties and forties, so that is interesting, as it may have helped! My blood is being tested again in September and the specialist who rang to tell me that I had it, wanted to know if I had been well, and whether I had fatigue, but being 79 I do occasionally as I am a busy person, so wouldn’t have thought that it maybe connected and also hot sweats at night. The other thing is too I have been a vegetarian for the past 40 years, which I think maybe why I have got to my age without too much damage, but I do have a cyst on my,liver which I read about as it can be connected. All very interesting! Thank hyou for this video. 😊

Hi Juliet, thank you for watching the video and sharing your story. I definitely think the blood donations in your 30s and 40s were a huge help in combination with being a vegetarian. Fatigue is often one of the first complaints people have, that’s how I realised I was unwell, but thankfully it improved very quickly after I started treatment. I wish you all the best with the specialist in September 🤍

I have high ferritin 650 nmols/l, i then told mybdoctor i had a moderate drinkinp problem. He told me the tests told him i had a stressed liver and fatty liver. So i quit. My ferritin went down to about 320but has stayed borderline high. He wont test me for haemochromatosis or iron overload. I would be afraid to ask him for phlebotomy. Im caucasion in Canada irish ancestors. I cant give blood because im on blood thinners. A lot of doctors go by straight and narrow criteria and dont deali with iron overload properly. As you say diet alone is not enough. Doctors wake up.

@@MariauceyRD_Dietitian One thing I discovered this morning is hydroChlorothiazide a blood pressure pill they have me on raises RBC count. Medical industry in the U.S. is so corrupt & counter productive in one's health it seems more everyday. Big Pharma & insurance companies rule the world these days. I feel so sorry for the people that don't do any research for themselves & just listen to their doctors. It's hard to even schedule an appointment in the U.S. anymore because people are lined up out the door. Obviously they aren't fixing people or people wouldn't be lined up for months to get an appointment. I give credit when credit is due & the medical industry is great at saving people that got ran over by a Mack truck. Maintaining people's good health with the correct nutrition etc they are clueless. Thank you for this video as I just received blood work last week that revealed a high iron saturation %. The rest of my values were in the normal range, so I am seeing my PCP here in the United States next week to get more clarification. I am 53 and am post menopausal as of Nov. 2023. My previous two lab values from Dec.2022 and Dec. 2021 did not show a high iron saturation %, so I think that because I have not had a menstrual cycle since Nov. 2022, that is why my saturation percentage was high in Dec. 2023. I have been dealing with hip pain and a stiff lower back for the last 6-8 months which I thought was due to the drop in estrogen due to menopause. I am now thinking otherwise. I have been checking my supplements as I weight train 2-3 times a week. I started using a pea protein (Sunwarrior Protein) about 1 1/2 years ago and noticed it has 5.9mg of iron. My question is, since this is not animal based, can I continue to use or should I remove from my diet. I use this pea protein almost daily. Also, does matcha green tea help mitigate absorption or is it only certain types of tea? Thank you and please continue to make videos like this!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Cynthia! I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed my video. I plan to continue making videos like this, especially when I receive such positive feedback like yours. You are correct, the iron in the pea protein powder is non-heme so it should be ok to continue using this. And if you do get a diagnosis, the most important treatment will always be the venesections/phlebotomies. And yes matcha green tea contains tannins so that will also help mitigate the absorption. Happy New Year Cynthia and I hope all goes well on your health journey. 💚

Thanks for sharing Carol!! I can relate, I had been taking a multivitamin with iron also prior to my diagnosis and was really shocked when i was diagnosed. Similarly I also felt extremely tired. With iron if its very low or very high it can really impact your energy levels. Thank you for watching my video 🥰

Thanks for such an informative video on Hemochromatosis. I was diagnosed in 2022, and my levels were 4200mg I did 6 venesections over a 6 week period and brought it down to 1700mg, I have changed my diet drastically and thought everything was fine until I did my check up again to find it's back up to 3000 mark. My question to you is, can you share a diet with me, please, as I have been between becoming a vegan or a vlexiterrian. I'm not sure what direction, but I would appreciate your help. Thanks again

They really are the most effective strategy for keeping your levels in check. Yes I am planning future videos that are more practical and I will incorporate eatign with haemochromatosis into these for sure 💚

Hi there, I was diagnosed with haemochromatosis via genetic test, and my doctor recommended not having blood taken but going on a full vegetarian diet. My bloods showed ug/l 325 ferritin. I understand that is only slightly over the normal range. Do you think the diet change is drastic?
@MariauceyRD_Dietitian
@MariauceyRD_Dietitian 10 күн бұрын
Hi Tom. Thank you for watching the video ✨ I do think it is quite drastic as diet only plays a very small role and becoming a strict vegetarian isn’t for everyone. I wouldn’t imagine becoming a vegetarian will drastically improve your numbers. I’d recommend closely staying linked in with your doctor to monitor the situation.

My Ferritin 347.67 ng/mL HIGH (normal 21.81 - 274.66), and Iron 214 ug/dL HIGH (normal 50 - 175), but the Dr. was suggesting that diet could help. I've cut out red meat entirely, but after watching this video, I think I need a genetic test. I have Scottish clan Lyle blood on one side... Hmm, I guess if I have it, I better get used to being a blood donor...

Thanks for the great informative video. I'm 70 and wasn't diagnosed till I was 65 with HC. My physical therapist suspected it, for years nurses were lecturing me about drinking because my liver emsymes where high. I now have the iron under control after 2.5 years of blood removal. It's looking like my maintenance will be every 9 mo which I credit to my diet and life style. My big problem is joint damage, that's why I was getting physical therapy.. It seems even though my iron is under control my joints are still suffering. Is there anything I can do or take to relief joint damage? Also it's very disappointing that they dispose of the blood and do not use it. I figure I have given 12 gallons! I live in Wisconsin and the medical industry is very ignorant about HC. I am the only patient my family dr. has had to deal with. I learned alot about the disease from a great book I found on the web.

Hello! Thank you so much for watching the video - I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful. It sounds like you have had quite a long road with your HC journey. It's so important to raise awareness of the condition to help people get diagnosed earlier. It's a pity they have been throwing away the blood, it often depends on the country's own regulations on what they can/can't do with the blood. Where I am in Bermuda, they are able to donate my blood but that only changed recently. The best diet to help with joint pain would be a Mediterranean style diet as it is anti-inflammatory in nature. This would include lots of fruit and veg, wholegrains and unsaturated fats like olive oil and oily fish. I will be doing a full video on this over the next few months which will hopefully be helpful. Thank you again for watching - the support is very much appreciated.

There are no diet requirements HH and trying to avoid iron or inhibit absorption puts you at risk of becoming deficient in other essential nutrients and minerals like magnesium which is required for over 300 enzymatic functions like vitamin D3 metabolism which you aren't being tested for so it's safest to just let venesections control your iron.

I am 67 now and have just been diagnosed with this 2 weeks ago. I have had lots of problems starting in my 40s and never knowing what caused any of it. I was diagnosed and medicated for sleep apnea in 2003. I was already on high blood pressure tablets. In March 2021 I had a heart attack at work and was taken to hospital. The very next day I had another heart attack in the hospital. I was then rushed to another hospital. where I had angioplasty and stayed in hospital for another 2 weeks. I came home and was still having problems. I was admitted back into hospital and in May of 21 I had a triple heart bypass. I never really recovered and I am now in a wheelchair. I sleep for hours everyday and I can potter around in the kitchen that is my limit. I also have heart failure. I am now waiting to see a blood specialist and my doctor said my liver seems alright for now. I would like to know if too much iron is in my heart which I now know left untreated this can go into your organs. Nobody ever knew and the doctor reckons my parents would never have known about them having this condition haemochromatosis. I am trying to learn everything I can about this but, It is very difficult and especially trying to learn about what to eat and what not to eat. I am so very glad I found this channel because at least I can learn about nutrition. They say you are never to old to learn and I am trying to find out as much as I can because now 2 out of the 3 of my adult children who are 40 plus are now having problems. One is under a cardiologist and the other one is having liver problems. They now have both been tested and are waiting to see the results.Thank you.

Is high iron saturation levels the same thing?
@MariauceyRD_Dietitian
@MariauceyRD_Dietitian 5 ай бұрын
Hi Larry & Carmen. A transferrin saturation level test checks how much iron in the blood is bound to the protein transferrin, so yes this does show if you have a high iron level in the blood and it is used when making a diagnosis. A serum ferritin level tests to check the amount of iron stored in your body. Hopefully that is helpful. Thank you for watching my video 💫

Hi Terri, many thanks for watching my video and I hope if was helpful. That is a very strong family history! My father and his father also had the condition. I'm not sure how much further it went back. Unfortunately there is no herbalist approach that would replace the need for regular blood venesections. The tannins from tea and coffee and the phytates in fruit and veg will help reduce absorption slightly but no where near as significantly as your regular blood removal treatments.
