Learn the difference between delta y and dy for your Calculus 1 class. Remember, delta y is the exact difference (or the exact change) between the new y-value and the original y-value. On the other hand, dy is an "approximated difference" by using a derivative and we call dy the differential.

I just came across your channel. Very nice work, very detailed, and I like how you really show all the steps, rarely assuming that the viewer knows something as a matter of fact and including even simple and minor steps. I've always liked explanations like that because it makes it easier to remember, for me anyway ... lol ... Thanks for posting.

DeltaY is just f(x+deltaX) - f(x) ? Why does it seems so complicated ;-;

hmmm i wonder if the size difference has anything to do with the function being concave or not.

is there any reason for knowing the difference, other than being able to flex?

I've long wondered what the difference was between Dx and Delta X, and why they didn't just use the Delta, still curious why they didn't use a modified Delta symbol to signify an approximation instead of looking like another variable

It's because the method is based on differentiation, so the method is simply expands differential notation. The fact that dx and delta X are "the same" is just a convention of this application, they're not actually the same concept at all. It's sort of like how you can have a function of the position of an moving object and call it p(x), and also have a function for the velocity of a moving object and call it v(x), but if you take the derivative of the position function p'(x) will also be the velocity. In this application p'(x) and v(x) are the same since they both will map the velocity of the object. But it would be wrong to say that a derivative is the same as velocity. In this particular application it is, but in general they're different concepts.

Well, if y=f(x) then partial(y)=dy It only changes when y is a multivariable function.

for future reference, computationally, partial differentiation is almost the exact same thing as a normal derivative except every other variable except the independent variable are treated as constants when taking the derivative

Sure, the derivative method is "easier" but less accurate. This method is best for small changes in the delta. Going from x=3 to x=3.8 is +26.67%, that's not small... In the second example, the delta_y (0.3416) vs dy (0.4) is out by 10.7% If the example was dx=0.08, that's just a change in x of 2.667%. Actual delta_y is 0.0392, the dy is 0.04, that's off by only 1.96%

Actually ∆Y=f(x+h)-f(x) which is taught in Indian schools is used in Numerical methods. It's easy to remember also(Just the numerator of the definition of derivative using first principle.
