This week I'm trying out two different types of photography printing paper with my Epson Expression Photo XP-970 A3 printer. I'm comparing Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 paper with Canson Infinity Photgraphique II Baryta paper to see what the differences are and what the results are like with the Epson printer.

@@torimcmullan647 Hi Tori, the printer is excellent! Never had any issues with it. printing quality supersedes my expectations. Gallery quality just what I need for printing my artworks to sell. The inks are very expensive - so I adjust my selling price accordingly. Very easy to install and update. I print from my mobile phone or laptop no problems. For printing paper I use epson and the more expensive archival papers suggested by Robert. Hope this helps.

Great video Robert! I've been waiting to watch this all day. I'm glad you displayed two of my favourite images of yours: the falcon and Man Tor. Both fantastic images! I see why people like the semigloss but I am partial to matte type papers for most photos. I think you might lose a bit of sharpness as the ink spreads but just love the look that it gives. I am very impressed with the quality of your printer. That image of the falcon came out spectacular. Really enjoyed this one mate. Hope you are well and keeping safe!

I'm sure I've mentioned this before but the shot of the Falcon is fab mate. And the print looks brill - my Canson pack has fallen into the hands of Brexit and has been stuck at customs since early January, hopefully it turns up soon, same with some inks I've ordered from Canon too - that'll teach me to just order from Amazon next time!! Hope you don't mind me mentioning but thought I would as it took me a while to realise myself - when you are choosing the profile, you can place the ticks next to (I think 6 of) your most used and leave the ticks on them - this creates a drop down menu in the selector for quicker access - it only saves milliseconds but it's nice to share :)

Hi. Thank you for this video. Do you ever try custom (user defined) paper sizes. I tried printing on 6 x6 inch paper and it just printed out a load of lines (no image at all). Wish I could attach a photo. It is like the lines when you do a nozzle check if that makes sense. It will print on 6 x 6 in standard quality but if you change it to high or best quality or if you change the paper to anything other than plain paper it prints out lots of horizontal lines only. Just wondered if you have tried custom paper sizes and how you got on? Would love to know if it’s just my printer or everyone’s.

Hi Robert that was the an excellent review...the very best on KZfaq!!! I've got the Epson XP 970 printer recently & am having some problems with the colours on the print...somewhat pale/faded. The inks are all new & using gloss paper there is an improvement with colours being brighter/vivid but still does not replicate the image on my computer screen or the actual specimen/object photographed. Can the software be "tweaked" to disperse more ink? Where can I get the Custom ICC printer (Custom colour) profiles for this printer? Thank you for a reply.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick - many thanks for the kind comments. That does sound odd. What is your setup? Are you using Mac or PC? Are you using Epson inks? What software are you printing from. And what brand of paper are you using? ICC profiles will help a lot, but generally your computer should handle the colour well enough that you're not getting pale and faded colours. You can find the profile info from Fotospeed here: fotospeed.com/support#color-manage - You need to download a pack, print some test sheets and send back to Fotospeed, who will then send you the profiles you request. By the sounds of it though, there's something else wrong here - like I said, would be useful to know your setup.

Very nice video. Thank you! One question please. I notice that in the print dialog in the Print resolution box you have 240. I think that for Epson printer's this must be 360 (this is the native resolution of the printer) and on Canon printers must be 300. You have it in 240 by your choice or you didn't notice? Thanks again for your very informative video
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks George. I never noticed this! I use 240 for the matte prints as going higher isn't really perceptible with the texture of that paper, but I would normally set it at 360 for the prints on the Canson paper. I just forgot to change it inbetween. The print came out fantastic, so I didn't even double-check. Thanks for watching. 😀

I've never tried to be honest Erin. My guess would be that it would be problematic though. Also, I think you wouldn't fit very many sheets in there, so there's not a great advantage to using it. I'm afraid I don't know any photo printers that have a good auto feed cassette - it's so much more common to print individually with the manual feed. Sorry I haven't been much help!

Thanks Jane. What software are you using to print? I usually print from Lightroom, which allows you to resize and preview your print with some simple slider adjustments. You can use the printer without any profiles and often your computer and the printer will do a good job of handling the colour. Using ICC profiles will optimise printing for your particular setup and the paper you're using. You can get profiles from the Epson website I believe.

Hi Clive, I'd definitely recommended it. There are certainly better printers out there, but not in this price range. The maintenances box would need replacing once full, but I think it will last quite a while before that happens. The images you print, the colour profiles you use and the paper you use will all affect how long the inks last. I don't monitor it closely, but I print on average a couple of images per month and I've had the same inks for almost a year now. The yellow is almost done, but others have quite a bit left. Thanks Sharon. It depends on things like the specific images I'm printing and the paper I'm using. There are also different sizes of cartridges you can buy. Hi. Mick, it's hard to diagnose the problem without seeing your exact setup, but getting a proper profile could help. You have to contact Fotospeed for a custom profile - they send you some files that you need to print out and send back to them. It has to be using one of the papers they supply though. If you scroll down a bit on this page, you'll find the link for the custom profiles. fotospeed.com/support

@@Robert-Bishop Thanks for getting back to me. I have contacted them and I was told they do ICC profiles for the XP 970 but I'd need to contact them via email first. I'm going to do that and see where that takes me.

Hi just wondering whether it can print on thicker papers as i bought permajet portrait white 285 and my epson ecotank a4 printer will not take the paper in :(

Hi Brian - thickest I've printed on is about 230, which was fine. My guess is that it would take it, but I can't say for sure I'm afraid. I'll have to give it a try at some point.

I haven't used the 8700, so I can't give you any info on that I'm afraid. The amount of prints you get will depend on a lot of things, such as the images you're printing, the paper you use and the colour profiles your computer is using. I only print on the Fotospeed and Canson papers, using the ICC profiles for those papers and probably average about 3 A3 prints per month. I think I'm on the same cartridges for nearly a year now and still going strong! I know that's not the most accurate answer, but like I said, it depends on a lot of things, and is hard to to put into specific numbers. Thanks for watching. 😊

About how many pictures are you able to print without refilling ink in the 970
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 жыл бұрын
That depends on a lot of things Timothy. It will vary depending on things like the images you're printing and the paper you're using. There are also different sizes of cartridges you can buy. Using the cartridges that came with the printer, I got about 25-30 A3 prints. Since then I've got XL ink cartridges and have yet to deplete them, although I've probably done about 20 prints so far. I also recommend getting XP-970 ICC profiles for the particular papers you're using - that will help to stop you wasting ink.

@@FreakyGamerOfficial Thanks very much Blake. I definitely recommend getting the profiles. If you get your paper from Fotospeed you can get the profiles for free. You can find the info on the Fotospeed website. 😊
