There are many different types of coffee filters, but which coffee filter is the best? The answer is that... it's complicated!
Each filter material type, whether it be paper, metal or fabric, has its unique properties that allow your cup of coffee to shine differently. So let's look at the different types of coffee filters and the qualities they infuse our final cup of coffee to figure out which coffee filter type is the best for you!
Let's start by looking at the characteristics of the three filter types.
Paper filters brew a cup that is clean, crisp and delicate with low sediments and oils. It is also the easiest one to clean up and has no maintenance. Two downsides are that the environmental factor is high, and so is its price.
Fabric filters catch a similar amount of sediments as a paper filter but let more oils through, making it a more juicy and mouthfeel-focused cup of coffee. It's great for the environment and has a low price tag. The biggest downside is its high maintenance requirement.
Metal filters let most sediments and oils through, making a heavy mouthfeel cup with a gritty texture. The filter will last you a lifetime, but it might not be suitable for everyone.
Now that you know the characteristics of the different types of coffee filters, I also provide two questions you can ask yourself to narrow down which coffee filter is the best for you.
There isn't one "best" coffee filter type; it is all about personal preference like your coffee cup.

Thank you, your videos have been enjoyable, timed well (not too short, not too long, not rushed), well produced and seemingly accurate (I say seemingly because I am sure some disagrees). All that to ask, “are you Norwegian?” Ref. Maintenance pronunciation. Seriously though well done videos and thank you.

Appreciate the comment and haha, ya caught me! Jeg var født i Oslo og levde der for fjorten ăr :P Good job on catching that, some people have noticed the quirk but nobody has pinned it down after noticing it :D

I usually go for paper filters, but have recently switched to finetuning my grind setting for a metal filter (like you say, cheaper + more eco-friendly + full bodied coffee - which for me, compensates for the "cloudiness" of the coffee). I have tried cloth filters but after using them for a while, they became quite annoying to clean and to get rid of any lingering smells. Will try boiling them - great advice!

Sounds like you have tried the whole spectrum! I do love how you can let a metal filter sit for a few hours without worrying about cleanup. With fabric it's indeed a "let's wash it asap or it will get more funky", which is really the annoying and tedious part for me... Another tip with fabric filters that I didn't mention is to store it submerged in water when not in use. We did that in the past in a cafe I used to worked really well to keep the funk at bay as I think it's something about the constant washing and drying that promotes all the weird smells +_+

Isn't it necessary to take into account water and energy required for cleansing cloth filters while assessing the environmental impact and total cost of ownership?

Plus, fabric uses a lot of water to clean everyday, How about nylon filters, similar to metal but a bit finer for sediment and easy clean up.

Brewing Habits I prefer the cloth/fabric filter because I love that juicy mouth feel almost like silk.

Sameee! I used to be all about the paper filter for its convenience and clarity but over time I've really opened up to fabric filters for its juicy goodness 🔥🔥

I still love my clean and crisp cup of coffee more than usual because that is what how I got into home brewing coffee. Also, its only $3-6 per 100 papers which is not bad for me. On environmental point of view, its still degradable and can be made from much more sustainable material like banana leaves which is not too bad. I already have a vietnam drip so I think I'll skip on others.

Sounds solid, seems like you have done your exploration and chosen the ones that you enjoy the final cup of coffee the most from! $3-6 per 100 filters?! Im assuming thats USD. Still thou... sign me uppppp xD Here in Canada one can get 100 Hario V60 filters for around $10-15CDN (~$8-13 USD).

Doesn't a cloth filter create more bypass?
@brewinghabits
@brewinghabits 2 жыл бұрын
Compared to a paper filter it does allow more coffee compounds through the filter. Especially the oils, which allow for a thicker and more viscous body. If we are purely going for the amount of bypass then the metal filter is the most bypass prone filter as it allows for oils AND sediments to pass through into the final cup.

@@brewinghabits Doesn't bypass mean the water going through without properly going through the coffee?
@brewinghabits

 @Lightseeker Ahhh gotcha, I'm quite certain that all three filters have mostly the same amount of contact with the coffee. The water still needs to flow through the coffee bed and doesn't have a chance to flow around or avoid the coffee bed. Are you perhaps thinking about flow rate? As different filters have different drawdown times. Because even within a specific filter type, the material greatly impacts the drawdown speed that you end up having.

Here in LatAm (I'm from Buenos Aires) we have two different ways of making coffee related on the type of filter. If it is a paper filter, we put the ground coffee in the filter and add the water, now, if we use a cloth filter we add the ground coffee to the hot water and then filter it, this is the case allways, homes, restaurants or coffe shops (when the "espresso" isn't is an option) . The second way (the coffe in the hot water) its called "turquish".
