How do you know what to get when it comes to paper and metal coffee filters? In this video, we go over the plusses and minuses of both. O lot of it comes down to flavor preferences though because neither is actually bad. I prefer a nice clean cup so I tend to stick with paper but people who love the traditional taste of a french press may tend to go with a metal filter. The next question is an environmental one which most likely will have you going with the metal filter.

I’ve been using a metal filter I got from Amazon. No clogging or any issues mentioned by others, I use reusable filters for any of my coffee makers including the Keurig; they just make the prep step easier specially when using the chemex.

Thanks for addressing something that I am going thru RIGHT NOW! I have a red plastic poor over, but they need filters to work. I tried the paper filters, but a standard metal filter will last a LOT LONGER than the paper ones--plus U never run out!!!! Just as I was watching this I went to Amazon & ordered a metal filter for my pour over!!!

The taste between paper and metal filters differs greatly. The paper filters absorbs all the coffee oils which affects the flavor.

Similarly, I now working on my second Osaka filter that have clogged. The first, I let the coffee ground stand abit before trying to clean it unsuccessfully. The second, I would purposely clean it immediately after filtering and it lasted abit longer but clogged non the less. For cleaning it tried boiling in hot water and a vinegar solution. No luck.

Over the last year that has been my bigest complain about the osaka. You might try Baking soda. Sometimes that will work.

Buy a paperless one. U can use it with or without paper. Paperless filter also compatible with paper filter like hario v60 for example

Thanks for this review! I'm recently back to using paper filters. From an environmental perspective, think about how much water (and possibly vinegar or other materials) you use to clean out the metal filter. Plus *one day* when you discard the metal filter, how many years does it sit in landfill? Paper biodegrades in a matter of months, I believe. Thanks again!

Just My opinion but the tastes are completely different. The paper tastes a bit better, it just a smooth clean texture and taste. Has a nice body. Metal filter gives it more of a gritty fuller taste. I like the paper somehow it has a stronger coffee taste to it. Just go try them both.

How did you get your steel filter unclogged? I have a Osaka steel filter and I'm having trouble getting mine unclogged.

You might try baking soda. around 10 - 20 grams, maybe more, for about 4 cups of water. Sometimes this will work. Let it soak for a few hours or over night.

Have you tried a proprietary coffee cleaner such as Cafeeza?

I've heard you can burn the filter in the hob apparently, it'll reduce the trapped coffee to ashes
