This is the kind of hip hop I was listening to in the 90s along with Tribe and De La Soul plus Beasties and a few others. I feel like Tribe is still talked about a lot but for Digable Planets aren't talked about much -- probably because they only had 2 albums and I think only their first was considered a commercial success (which is unfortunate).

When this came out, I thought this was the future of hip hop (along with Tribe Called Quest)... then came The Chronic. It was like when Street Fighter II come out in arcades and then two years later there were only fighting games; after The Chronic, all the variety and consciousness in hip hop faded real fast and everything became Gangsta rap or R&B.

Best song to come out of 1991 and still holds up today. My man and I used to jam to this. Now our kids are grown and daughter goes to SF and Oakland to see these guys still playing.

I played in a punk, a rock, and metal band. But my favorite music has always been hip hop from the 80s and 90s. More than the music I played.

This white suburban kid went to see them in maybe 1991. I loved (love) this style. As others have mentioned it was De La and Tribe too. The whole Reachin album is amazing and beautiful

It's not often that I click the like button before watching, but there ya go. Not a bad track on that album, and one of the first times that I remember hearing hip hop on commercial radio. A classic.

Yeah, the 90s smooth jazz rap of De La Soul, PM Dawn, & Digable Planets - it was all grooves, and a nice alternative to the west coast gangsta rap that was emerging at this same time. Although, a one hit wonder,, if you were diggin' this, then you should definitely check out : Band - US3 Song - Cantaloop Fun & Funky !

I’m so happy to see ppl listening to disable planets. I wish there was a mv for their song la femme fatale bc it’s my absolute fav DP’s song. It’s uploaded as audio on KZfaq but most ppl don’t react to songs that don’t have a mv. But I highly rec listening to it. Gives me chills every time I listen. I love a political song that speaks truth to power and thats 100% what la femme fatale is.

Sometimes called Backpack Rap, this is a classic from my adolescence. It's kind of a pretentious song (click click, click click!), but one of the best hooks I've heard over the last 40+ years, and the flows are all excellent.

It’s cool that you like this because it’s the song everybody knows them for, but this song is a joke compared to the stuff on their second album Blowout Comb.
