We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

Gotta say Josh, that is the best foundation layout paint job I have ever seen and I have done hundreds of house foundations. I never saw anyone use no trespassing and sewer paint for layout but the combination was stunning.

Mother Nature has not been very kind to my favorite family this year. What makes you so exceptional is how you both embrace problems in your path with humor and find a way to overcome them. The end result is always one of perfection. No wasted energy being upset but, always finding a way to work through the new hurdle before you. As always, accomplishing the objective before both of you by taking the problem on together.

Here’s an odd trick I saw years ago on a construction site: The pipe fitters had just dug a trench for some underground utilities, and before they could get everything into the trench and get it inspected and backfilled, it was going to rain. They placed visqueen in the hole completely covering the bottom and coming up and out of the sides. It rained and filled the trench with water. When the rain stopped, they pumped the water out of the trench as if it were a swimming pool and the walls and bottom of the trench were intact and dry. Work proceeded.

Little Ellie is 💯 A spitting image of being another Erin. She looks just like you Erin and such a cutie pie just absolutely adorable. She also has her unique way with the animals around your farm. They absolutely love her and will follow her anywhere 👏😁. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if she becomes a Veterinarian when She’s grown. She’ll definitely be a good Vet because she has that special connection to animals.

You got it… three steps… 1 build a berm on the high side to prevent runoff into your foundation, 2 tarp the area to prevent ground saturation of the dirt, 3 pump out the accumulation of water on the tarp as required ( try and give it a spot to run out of you can. A temporary A frame over the hole could help.

It’s so crazy how the weather effects our lives. My son has had to do labor type work in 112• weather. There are fires in California and Oregon and you guys are practically getting rained out. I love watching your videos. Been watching since close to the beginning

Notice how Erin gets in and gets her hands dirty on every single project but when Josh is in his zen state (electric work) she stays out of the way. Every video we see her busting her butt. Hey, remember the cup is always half full never half empty. Although it’s raining with the tarps you have down you can enjoy the temporary pool. You have two weeks to wait for concrete. So enjoy the pool. LOL. Sorry, I can only imagine the stress of the rain with the time constraints of scheduling everything. I have all the confidence you will be able to this happen as you always do.

My wife and I are doing something very similar up in rural Minnesota at the moment and we started our own channel to document the massive journey we are undertaking so when we are 50, looking back on all that we've been able to accomplish will be truly a treat. Just a "heads up" on your last video. You may want to consider the temperature coefficient of you solar panels. At 136V, it is possible that you could exceed 150V on a cold day, and it could harm your electronics.

My prayers for dry weather for you are with you both... I've been there & done that. I'm a pro-driver Monday thru Friday, and my dispatcher overlapped too many pick-ups and drop-offs. I told dispatch I'm a driver not a magician, I can't be in 2 places at once. Dispatch laughed and cleared my schedule of that stupidity... THANK GOD.

Keep attem folks. One deeper hole in the trench where you can put the pumps and then it will all run to that spot.

I live in Tornado country. 🌪 Our sirens go off at least 3-4 times a year in town. We get multiple observed Tornados in a 10 mile radius and I want to build out of town. It's also super cold in the winter. I'll looking to build a ranch style ICF home with R30 insulated 6in reinforced concrete walls and a full basement. Keep us warm and safe. I'm thinking of doing builddeck or similar flooring system and the basement walls in a monopour so it's essentially a giant storm shelter. Weather gets sporty and we can just hang out in the basement. I've heard of people pouring cement roofs but that seems extremely time consuming and expensive when I can essentially hurricane strap the roof directly to the cement walls, over build it a little.
