Roger, love the content you provide, thank you! This is a great video. As a family of 4 in the process of preparing to move to Costa Rica it seems this digital nomad visa with a family starts to become similar in effort to applying for temporary residence in terms of requirements. As far as driving in Costa Rica I assume that this allows people to use their foreign driver's license for the duration of their stay is that accurate? I assume as a rentista I would need to register with the government and get a local driver's license after the 90 day visa expires is that accurate. I have tried to get a hold of your office through your website's contact form a couple of times. Is there a better way to reach out to your office? I believe we may want to apply for both as our goal is at least a couple years in the country and we see the nomad visa helping us bridge the gap so border runs won't be necessary. Our destination is Monte Verde which makes border runs a bit of trek while kids are attending school and we are working remotely. Appreciate your thoughts, this comparison may be a good video idea, happy to be the subject asking questions.

Hi David. Thank you for your feedback and watching the video. You are correct for a family the amount of paperwork is similar to applying for one of the temporary residency categories. The ability to drive in Costa Rica is a great question because it is separate from the immigration process and conflicting at times. I would have to check up to determine if the Nomad Visa automatically extends the drivers license past the 90 day limit. For temporary residency it does not do so and you can only apply for a drivers license after being approved. My apologies for the contact page. We had some issues with the website and it should be restored by now if not my office website is plawcr.com and that is also a way to contact us.

Great video! Thank you for posting it! I've used it to apply for my digital nomad and that one is approved. I'm struggling with my dependent's application - When I enter the information for the minor child, on the the applicant detail page on the tramite ya website, do I enter my information (as I am applying for a minor child) or am I entering information about my child?

Hi Peter. You will submit the application as the legal representative of the dependent child. Here is the official format from immigration. It indicates that the undersigned (you as the parent) submit the application on behalf of your minor child. Just be sure you applying for a dependent status. GLAD TO SEE the digital nomad law was finally implemented, but disappointed that the "retiree law" is still languishing ! Any idea as to when the Asamblea will get to work on it ?
@CostaRicaLaw
@CostaRicaLaw Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. The Retiree law is being reviewed by the new President and their staff. That one is not up to the legislature anymore since they passed it into law. What is pending are the regulations that must come from the Executive branch, Tax Department and the Department of Immigration.

Hi and thank you for your feedback. I am attaching the link to the process directly outlined by the Department of Immigration for the online version. It does not indicate that you must be present in Costa Rica to use the online system. Try putting in the same date you are applying and see if it will move you to the next step. Just be sure you have all the supporting documentation and payment of the application to avoid the application being rejected. This was a wealth of info for digital nomads. Much appreciated! What can you tell us about the vehicle import options for digital nomads? For example, how might one ship a vehicle from the US within the confines of this VISA program? I find that vehicle import has been the most ambiguous topic for this particular VISA.
@CostaRicaLaw
@CostaRicaLaw Жыл бұрын
Jennifer thank you for your feedback and great question about the vehicle tax exemption. The vehicle tax exemption does not apply for Digital Nomad Vista. That tax exemption was created only for the residency categories of Investor, Rentista and Pensionado. The law granting those incentives was passed by the legislature, however the executive branch has not yet approved the required regulations which means that the government (treasury department) is not yet granting those tax exemptions and we have not been given any time frames on that regulation at this point.

I am running into a problem with the medical insurance. I have a private medical insurance that renews in December each year. Now we are here in February and I want to apply for the visa, but because my policy renews annually, it shows that it expires and is due for renewal in December. My insurance company is unable to certify that I have insurance past the current expiry date. It would be such a huge waste of money to have to buy another year of insurance today just to meet this requirement. It doesn't make sense! What can I do?

Hello, thanks for the great video. If I am living abroad how do I actually pay Bank of Costa Rica? International wires to CR require a cedula, which I can't seem to find for BCR. I see references to "400000001909" but that has too many digits per my bank's expectations. Thanks in advance, I really appreciate the content.

Your video is a life saver. How can I get a sworn affidavit for my bank statements in Canada? Is this done through the bank or a notary? Also can we send documents via email to be translated prior to leaving Canada or should this be done in Costa Rica only? Thanks for your help.
@CostaRicaLaw

Hi Will. The law allows you to hire a CPA in your country and have them certify your income. You would need to have that document legalized in Canada by the Costa Rica Embassy in Canada since Canada is not a signatory to the Apostille treaty. Here is the relevant portion " Alternately, the applicant may submit a certification of the above issued by a public accountant or notary public, if the procedure is completed in Costa Rica, or by the counterparts of such professionals abroad in accordance with the legislation of the respective country. This certification is the only component that must be accompanied by the respective consular legalization or apostille."

Great explanation and walk-through! What I want to ask is to provide proof of income I can get account statements from Wise app. I'm a freelancer so I use the Wise application to easily and simply receive payments internationally. But Wise is not a real bank. It's a fin-tech company. I have all my transactions on the app. Everything I purchase in my day to day, grocery, flight tickets, payments coming from clients, can be seen on the app and in the statement that the Wise app provides. Do you think the account statements that I can download from the app can be used in this digital nomad application? Because I qualify for the visa but I do not have a bank account that I can use for the visa application. All my transactions are on the app like I said. Really curious to hear your opinion sir!
@CostaRicaLaw
@CostaRicaLaw Жыл бұрын
Hi Akif. Thank you for your comments and question. In that case I would probably engage a Costa Rican Certified Public Accountant (CPA) that could certify your income based on their review of the WISE account. That way the Department of Immigration would receive a certified document from a local CPA to substantiate the income. Here is what the regulations state "Alternately, the applicant may submit a certification of the above issued by a public accountant or notary public" So the option is available in the law and regulations.

So I would be interested in taking the next steps if I can find the right guidance that can help me go through the process properly.

For digital nomad you have to deposit $100 to the account of the Department of Immigration with Banco de Costa Rica Account 242480-0. If you are in Costa Rica you can do so at any Banco de Costa Rica branches. If you are not in Costa Rica then you will need to wire the funds to that Banco de Costa Rica account since they don't have credit card options at the moment. Here is the contact information for the Banco de Costa Rica international section who may be able to assist you with international wire instructions for Banco de Costa Rica. www.bancobcr.com/wps/portal/bcr/bancobcr/empresas/bcr_comercio_exterior/datos_de_contacto

Aloha thank you for sharing this valuable information. I am a expat from the US in Costa Rica with a visa that is expired now for one year. Are there any channels, videos or online resources you can refer me to about this type of situation? I think there is a chance if I get married, I can avoid problems and maybe just pay a fine for having stayed over the limit. I am worried that if I try to go to the United States, I will be punished and shut out of CR. I think they are going to have a military conflict in the USA. I do not want to go back but I don't think I can qualify for the digital nomad status because my tourist visa is expired. Thank you for any information you can provide about this!

If you came in as a tourist and overstayed then it would be safer to leave and come back and then apply for a digital nomad or another residency category that you could qualify for. There is a risk they will not let you but that depends on the immigration office at the point of entry. At the moment you would be illegal and subject to deportation which could be worse. Consult with an immigration Attorney to review your particular situation and advise the best course for you.

Thanks for the information. The cost of translating 12 months worth of bank statements to Spanish seems prohibitive. Most companies charge $20-$25 per page. Assuming 60 pages for the preceding 12 months (5 pages per month) would be a minimum of $1200. What have others done in this situation?
