Digital Piano Slow/Stuck Keys Repair

Lots of keys on this Kawai CA97 were slow and some would stick and won't come back up at all. Time for a repair / maintenance.

Best part at 5:25 “I need to do this…..88 times…”. Labor of love for a keyboard. Got one used (Yamaha CLP100) for 80. Keys were stuck. A Saturday and some supplies and she runs like her old self! Speakers need some work too but that’ll be another day for now I use headphones

See my comment above. Focus on cleaning the felt/teflon at the end of the key. Don't bother lubricating/boring the holes in the keys. Also, there are other videos around that show you what screws to remove to get access (This video skips that part).

With respect, you have not addressed the real issue. It has nothing to do with lubricating or widening the holes in the keys. That is not what causes the keys to stick, and lubricating them is a waste of time. Rather, it is the "felt" on the end of the key. It is not just felt - but also has a sheet of teflon (known as slip-tape) on top. so the nob (known as a capstan) within the mechanism can slide off of it to simulate a real piano action. What happens is that the glue that holds the teflon on leaks out the side and gums up the top of the teflon, so the capstan sticks. You could see that on your worst key, the felt/teflon was almost destroyed. This is a known problem with KAWAI CA67 and similar pianos. They claim to have fixed this issue on the next generation - GF-3. I had all of the felt pads on CA67 replaced under warranty. However, now that I am out of warranty, I still get a sticky key from time to time. I have to clean the teflon, as well as the capstan, using a solvent to remove the gummed up adhesive that has worked its way onto the nob and teflon. Hope this helps, as other than the sticky keys, the CA67 is a great piano.

Hey. You seem to know what you’re talking about. Do you know about similar issues with Yamaha keyboards? I have a CLP-170 that I adore, but it’s quite old and the keys don’t go down evenly, and I have no idea where to start fixing it. Most repair shops have ignored my inquiry. Thanks in advance.

@user-cw6vf5fh3g Exactly. Ive been cleaning the capstan and the teflon with perfume and then lubing it with food oil :D. But it works only temporarily. Now I've put regular tape over this whole teflon tape but this tape has too much friction so the key is sticky in a different kinda way. I just need the name of the tape that kawai uses, when I google teflon tape all I get is super thin ptfe film which is useless in this case. Do you know what the original kawai tape is named or if you have any other alternative that is pretty much the same? Would highly appreciate it :)

I had sticky keys on my CA91 (only in the winter) and fully went into project expecting it to be the slip-tape problem often spoken of. Turns out the CA91 does not have slip-tape, but is actually a nice felt like pad with no issues. And, the sticky keys were resolved following the methods in this video. Particularly by using the pliers on the felt part at the very front of the keys and using the lubricant on the pins. Thank you for the extremely helpful video and links to recommended lubricants.

Correct. The only problem causing the sticky keys is the slip tape. On my CS11 I have replaced it with felt that I have glued on the keys.
