Agreed 100% with John about the preservation thing. DRM free digital files are the key to preservation. Physical copies are nice, but how many times are they missing patches or DLC? The practice of day-one patches have made physical not very good for preservation.
@fafski1199
@fafski1199 6 ай бұрын
Anything physical will eventually decay or become broken beyond repair. Ultimately as time passes the very few remaining working copies and the hardware needed to run them, will end up in the hands of rich collectors or behind glass cases in museums. At that point nobody will actually play the games or use the systems anymore, since it would be just to risky to do so. Then eventually as more time passes, they will eventually decay and become entirely lost. Sadly it will happen to every single physical copy of the game, including any that you own. Every type of format that games have been published on over the past 50 years, will have reached a point of decay and degradation, within the next 250 years or so. Some of those not on a cartridge or hardware, will likely be gone within a century. Digital on the other hand has the benefit of allowing you to continually make as many copies of any game you like and store that data, without any degradation to the game itself. It along with emulating the hardware that's needed to run the game (emulators) are pretty much the only way that will ensure a way to preserve them in the long term, while still allowing anyone access to play them and at very little cost (if any). I'm pretty certain that the Internet or any similar successor to it, will be around for a very long time after we are all long gone. As such there will always be several people in the future with a copy of any game no matter how obscure it is, along with a emulator to play it on. This will likely be by future collectors of digital retro games and/or library's that are comprised of old retro games. Some people might not like what I'm about to say, but currently "piracy" is actually doing far more in the way of preserving games and allowing people full access to old retro games, than anyone else is managing to do ATM.

I agree. I mostly play on Xbox or via the Xbox app on pc (even beyond game pass, Xbox play anywhere titles (buy once, play on console and pc) are nice), but when I buy outside of Xbox I usually go with GOG, because they’re DRM free. Picked up Horizon Zero Dawn on GOG, for example.

@corey2232 that's a cop out. Games get called copycat all the time. That's no reason to not make it a 3rd person game. Gamers have been wanting a 3rd person Indiana Jones game for a long time. They will not be able to connect to the Indiana Jones story in a first person game.
@techsamurai11

@@yomamasohot6411 yeah, I made the analogy of imagining games where you can't see Spiderman, Geralt, Nathan Drake, Lara Croft etc. They are going for a hybrid first person as opposed to a hybrid 3rd person. I think animating Indy in 3rd person while playing would have been awesome. Sure, it would have been harder than animating Senua and the camera is a pita but I think it would have been worth it.

SteamOS isn't proprietary, the parts that are are mostly just the Steam client. Valve has been working directly with FOSS organizations to push their changes upstream and that impact has been felt across the board. Vulkan? First FOSS Linux driver was funded by Valve. DXVK? Funded by Valve. Proton? Project lead was working under Collabora, Valve contracted out and their improvements are pushed upstream to WIne. In order to increase compatibility in Wine, Valve pursued an extension to Linux's file handling feature set, esync, that is now mainlined. Proton takes patches for Nvidia hardware (even from Nvidia themselves!) when there's little chance of any Valve hardware shipping with an Nvidia GPU. Even the recent improvements to SDL were funded by Valve. The HDR stuff they've been pushing has been making it's way into mainline distros. I could keep going. It's not just the Steam Deck. 99% of the work Valve have been doing has been felt across the entire desktop linux ecosystem. I can play games with Linux EAC enabled using Proton on Ubuntu or Arch, just like on Steam Deck.

Only thing I dislike about current physical media for games is that the manuals aren't being done (physically) anymore... One of my greatest joys back in the day was opening up the game box (PC) or case and picking up the big manual to read it. Two of my favorite game manuals of all time were the first Little Big Planet one (made to look like an old notebook) and the Metal Gear Solid 4 one (absolutely huge and even had a little comic inside to talk about Metal Gear Online).

MachineGames really quelled my concerns about how they're approaching Indiana Jones. I was fully expecting it to be a mix of Uncharted's progression and Wolfenstein's combat with Indy flourishings but the developer anecdotes communicated to me that they get the core of the character and are leaning into elements of the character like his intuition with the puzzle solving and emphasis on more open exploration. I'm obviously expecting them to take queues from Naughty Dog with the cinematic set pieces especially given their Wolfenstein series already shares a lot of those qualities, but overall I'm very impressed with how faithful to the tone and spirit of the movies their game looks to be.

I'm pretty upset with the all digital future path because I'm a father who bought games for his kids on his own Microsoft account only to find when I gave the kids my old Xbox One S they couldnt play their minecraft and other titles at all. I'm honestly convinced that the vast majority of gamers remain single guys, no kids, no family concerns to whom things like "well duh just game share" actually makes sense. The problem is it makes sense to them because they don't have responsibility to others and they frankly speaking havent experienced Judy wanting the kids to play their own Xbox so you can finally catchup on your stuff. No game share doesn't work because it actually requires my account to be actively signed in on another device messing I still can't play my stuff anyway. Now at one point Microsoft had suggested a "family share" scheme where all members in a family group could play all games purchased by anyone so long as they remained in the family group. If MS had moved forward with THOSE plans I'd care a lot less. But as things stand I can only say digital licensing is non-functional for multi-player homes. Moreover something NOT being talked about is the number of Xbox gamers losing ENTIRE libraries because they have no conception that their account is way more than just a video game account and formality to get access to the system. With your Xbox account you get a full Microsoft account which is a pretty target for hackers world wide. Can't tell you how many people on /r/Xbox have heart break stories about thousands of dollars of investment lost because of this. So no I'm not at all excited for the new digital download future.

The ideal solution is to offer the drive as a separately sold accessory, giving those who want it the option, for a premium. Though that does de-incentivize (sic) publishers from offering discs. Complex issue to be sure.

i'm someone who buys every new console and I primarily play digital media. (the noise the ps4 used to make when playing disc games drove me crazy!) but I don't think I would buy a new console from Sony or Xbox if it was digital only. I still like pulling out my old original xbox and 360 games for my series x now and then, games like the Orange Box, or LOTR battle for middle earth 2, where I own the physical game but cannot even buy it digitally if I wanted to.

Definitely 100% desire the option of physical media for ANYONE! I am basically all digital but I agree with John’s every point. Also it is the principle, relinquishing an aspect fundamental to console gaming to the companies. At least it was. Primarily Xbox user. I do want the option to buy discs and still buy plenty of games physically. The problem is that many of these discs are borderline coasters due to the industry shifting to relying on patches to hit release dates. Almost every game has massive updates once you insert the discs, which negates some of the benefits of a physical disc. The real issue here is that, I assume, GamePass nukes physical sales of any games that launch on it day one. If a retailer gets a bunch of $70 games that don't move, it's a waste of space and money for them and I see why they wouldn't want them. Supposedly Walmart just trashed there stock of Starfield this week.

Hello John! I am primarily an Xbox player. I live in Japan currently and have a Series X, I used to purchase my games mostly physical but because I share my home console with family back in my home country we switched over to buying fully digital at some point during the Xbox One days. This makes it easier for us to share games with the "home Xbox" system and because of my small living space not having physical games has been nice! I do think the option to be able to purchase physically is important though and i hope that this new series x all digital inst a replacement and just an option for users. Maybe 50$ cheaper then the disk drive version. I am also big movie goer too and losing the ability to watch UHD disks would be big sad for me. The option should be available! More options is better then less. Also i think during the holidays people like to buy physical games as presents rather then just a gift card. I cant imagine grandma buying Timmy a Xbox gift card for Xmas. You guys are awesome love your weekly videos.

Mass produced disks are not 'burned' they are stamped. There is basically a metal stamp with every little bit protruding from it that squishes into warm plastic to imprint the data. This can be done very quick and very cheap. And while it can be read by the same disk player, it is a fundamentally different technology from burning a disk at home. However, making the metal die is expensive and can't be changed without remaking it.

While "the year of Linux desktop" is a bit of a meme, it should be noted that the compatibility layers Valve has contributed to developing are being used on other Linux distros. Also Apples new "game porting tools" that they released last year is taking advantage of this. There are so many great indie record shops in the UK now, both online and brick-and-mortar. Physical music has a very, very strong market, largely among those who actively listen to lots of albums, typically on independent labels - and that spans many genres. Plus theres the younger generations who are helping drive CD sales again through K-pop, indie music, and all these special editions released by artists like Olivia Rodrigo. I luckily still have an indie game store in my town too, but they've pivoted to card games to stay open while still selling new and second hand console games. They barely stock Xbox though, and actively resent the MS strategy.

The made to order game idea makes a lot of sense. You can do that for books, for example, so why not physical media? It would be more expensive then producing them in bulk, but if they're sold directly by the publisher online, then they'd get a much bigger cut of the sale (no retailer cut), which would hopefully offset the costs. Afterall, the "burning" of the data onto the disc and the printing of the paper sleeve cover for the case would be the main made to order aspect of it. Cases, blank sleeves, blank discs, packaging material could be kept in bulk stock to some degree and are not unique to any specific game so their cost shouldn't be too bad. It really does seem like MS has abandoned the idea of Xbox as a console and is embracing Xbox as a service and the PC platform they already have. They'll keep some Xbox console hardware around for a bit, but it's going to be less a console and more a simplified repackaging of Windows PC gaming, in which physical media died over a decade ago.
