@5:00 it’s not only the pixel refresh rate but the brightness of HDR. I recently watched the new mission impossible in a Dolby theater and I still noticed a lot of stuttering in slow panning shots consisting of bright objects on dark backgrounds. So optimal motion smoothness for 24p = dim picture + slow response and all new TVs are the opposite.

For question 2 I would use black frame insertion. It dims the picture a bit, but it fixes films. You don’t get any soap opera effect.

For those that may be unaware, Sharp is also releasing 2 OLED displays: FS-1/FQ-1. 'The FS1 is based on Samsung's QD-OLED panels, while the FQ1 uses LGD's WOLED panels. The FS1 uses Sharp's Medalist S4X AI image processing engine, 11 speakers 85W sound system (ARSS+), Dolby Atmos and Google TV platform. The FQ1 offers similar specification but is based on the Medalist S4 AI image processor.'-OLED Info.

Caleb, Have you seen any issues with LG C3 having issues with sound from Apple TV 4K (newest) and Marantz Cinema 70S? I can route sound via eARC just fine when Apple TV is connected to to one HDMI ports on the AVR. When connected to HDMI1 port on the TV (while Marantz is on HDMI2 - EARC) I get no sound on Apple TV. This behavior was not occuring on LG C2.

Hi Caleb! I want to buy a 75 inch mid range TV. I will mostly watch movies in a not too bright and mostly dark room. I know OLEDs will be too expensive for me, so I am thinking of Sony X90L as a good mid range led TV. I know you would suggest Hisense or TCL but I have no experience nor trust in those brands honestly. So are there any other good options from Samsung or LG for the same price?

Hi Caleb, I have this aging gear. TV: LG 55UK6300PUE (Circa 2018 does 4K, but no eARC) AVR Yamaha RXV471 (Circa 2011 Adequate power, but no eARC or 4K, crude equalizer) SPEAKERS: Infinity Reference Five (stereo Circa 1993) Klipsch RC42 (center Circa 2022) I would like to improve the cinema sound performance, but the lack of eARC on the TV & AVR and the lack of surround speakers (because no easy way to wire them in) means that I should probably switch to a soundbar w/wireless surround. I can’t upgrade everything at once, so I’m thinking I will replace the AVR & speakers first, then the TV later. 1st. Get a Samsung Q910C (9.1.2=$1K) or Q990C (11.1.4=$1.9K). The Q910C is at least $900 less expensive, and probably more than adequate for our small media room (11x14). 2nd Replace the LG TV with either a TCL QM8 or Samsung Q80C. The Samsung is probably better technically and has QSymphony, but is it worth the extra $500 (or more) since both do eARC (for Dolby Atmos). Color accuracy is irrelevant since I am color blind. Probably a lot of people in this decision tree, and wonder what your thoughts are here.

I watch Direct Tv stream via one of their boxes. I stream all other platforms through the new Apple 4k TV. My room is somewhat bright but hasn’t been an issue with my current 2016 Q8 series, which is going out. I watch a lot of sports. Given these conditions, which tv would you recommend? I’m considering the TCL QM8, LG C3, or the Samsung S90C. Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

OLEDS look great but NOT in BRIGHT rooms. i want to avoid the glare on the tv and the lower light oleds would give off. i chose my home because of the bright rooms and how it faces the sun. what is the best QLED with 120hz refresh rate in your opinion? willing to spend upto $2,000 i can wait for a sale since all my tvs still work without problems

Hey Caleb, love the vids and have poured over so many looking to upgrade my old..ish Sony. I have a question please....why do most manufacturers continue to only put 2 HDMI 2.1 slots with one of them being the eArc. If we're looking for a TV to play gaming on, then a lot of us have BOTH the consoles they're making the TV's for. So if you also want to have your soundbar, then one of the consoles needs to go to a "lesser" port and it makes no sense to me. Thanks for your time mate and keep up the great work 😊

Hey Caleb I bought the lg c3. I was so excited. However it had very very bad Color banding so lg sent guys to repair. They replaced panel and board. I think the guys either put in wrong parts or panel as the hdr didn’t work after they left . So back they came. after lots of arguing. They did something with the board. and hdr works better now. However the picture quality is no where near what it was before. It now has like a film grain look to the picture or picture looks noisy. That’s the best way I can describe it. This has been brutal I am stuck with this tv now as lg just gives me the run around because they think I’m being to picky. I just wanted to share this with you to see if you have ever heard of such nonsense. I am so frustrated. Now every time I turn on my 2000 dollar tv I am so disappointed. And so so frustrated with lg. 😢

As someone who went from a Pioneer 151FD to an LG G1, 24fps pans did look pretty bad. But the lowest “cinematic motion” setting or whatever it is pretty much eliminated the issue for me without ruining the look of films. Very happy with that since I think that option was new to LG sets that year.

Hey Caleb, I've got a question regarding picture modes, so if I am gaming on my ps5 and I want the absolute best picture quality possible without caring atall about response time, VRR etc. what is the best picture mode? Should I just go with Movie/Cinema or does game mode actually do something for the picture as well (like some magic with recognizing tone mapping from the console etc... I'm just guessing because I'm pretty clueless). I've had bad experiences in the past with Samsung's game mode which essentially transforms the picture into something you'd think is vivid mode.

Do game mode, keep any VRR HDR off, SDR only, and LEAVE it on 1080p period. There is no 4K on game consoles it’s a dynamic upscale, which means it’s not a native resolution, so a 1080p native would look better then a upscaled 4K

The X90L really not great. It’s good tv but NOT as great as ppl feel . D same thing as ppl WANT BMW X5 SUV but cant afford it, so they buy BMW X3 thinking “yay its premium”. IN business school all professor made clear” EVERYONE knows X3 is Honda civic Tin CAN with BMW Body . Ppl know but buy it anyway. Why??? In fact the BMW X3 was Designed originally as Downgrade to USA/Canada to fill d gap between true premium n cheap, so ppl will like it enough, get used to it, but Hating on something. When X3 wear out, they “upgrade to X5, n ppl buy $800 iPhone will get used to iPhone, they dont want to switch, n in 3 yrs, they upgrade to a $1400 iPhone PRO, the Mid range for --EXPENSIVE brand/car/tech..is always Worst value, because u pay 2-3X for its spects for FEELING close to Flagship but it’s VERY far from Flagship. In fact, they sell 90% TVs on mid/low range. Cuz they dont want d market over flood with Second hand Flagship in 3-4 years, also they want Mid range TV ppl kept upgrading every 3 yrs vs 6 yrs. So ppl END UP SPending MORE money. Mid range SONY X90L always have VERY noticable Blooming, NOT as sever as the WTF 85 80, but the 90 always has small but Very noticable blooming. It’s good tv on its own, then u look at the Price tags like $1500 just for 65”. I am not making this up. My 2 TVS from 2020 2021 look hell of better than X90L. The X93L has Slightly 2% hair more blooming than Hisense 2022 Flagship U8H. U better off getting Last year SONY X95K or 2023 X93L , or 2023 Hisense U8K , TCL Qm8. Hisense U8K, TCL Qm8 look close to QD-OLED once tweaked. In Caleb’s video he MAL/ILL skechy “make under” tweak those TVs in “U8k vs Qm8” videos. Cuz if they make them look like QD-OLED similar, D X90L X85L LG QNED etc will utterly crash. 😊 Caleb wont LET that happen. 😮

The issue seems to be that plasma and other technologies better compensate for the technical limitations of the cinematic low frame rates by its own technical limitation allowing smearing to take place creating a motion blur. The problem really is the source and not the display, the better the display the more oblivious the problem with the source will be.

Are you going to be doing a Vizio Quantum Pro Review? Or is it not even worth it; I'm getting a new TV this Holiday season and I was pretty sure I would end up with a Hisense 65" U7K but still want to see your review on it. I'm open to suggestions on other brands; I'm upgrading from a 50" Vizio V505-g9 (entry-level 4k TV 2017) looking for the best Price to performance 65" 4kTV under $1000.

Really like today's vlog Caleb. I also have a 50 inch Pioneer Elite Kuro Plasma and I just recently bought a house that I just completely gutted out to the studs and going to completely renovate inside and outside. I'm looking into OLED because my eyes are use to already watching on a high-end TV and oh yes my Pioneer is professionally calibrated too. My question to ask you is it worth just to buy the 77 inch Sony A95L or I'm willing to wait for the 88 inch 8K OLED from LG either the Z2 or the new Z3 the reason is that I'm working on designing my own media room downstairs. I have just ordered Macintosh Amplifiers and their new mx 180 processor and they will be powering in wall speakers from Bowers and Wilkins and they are the cinema series. Anyways Caleb I just wanted your opinion on this matter because I always watch your channel and vlogs because I wanted to say that your really smart guy at the things you do and I have a pretty good knowledge about electronics too. So Caleb if you could please let me know what you think. Thanks again 😊

The price points don't make sense....you are comparing a $25k 8K OLED to a $5k 4k OLED. Unless you are already rich with enough to retire skip the 88" OLED and go with a 77" A95L or a 85" X95L.(I would not get a WRGB OLED at 83" because of the uniformity issues, I would wait if 83" QD-OLED comes out)

Cheap OLED vs. LCD thought: Get yourself an HDMI splitter and get a TV from somewhere with a return window such as Best Buy. I just bought the LG A2 (48 inch) on sale for $600 to compare to my LG NanoCell85, which has an IPS panel. I have an odd shaped room where a wider viewing angle is needed. The A2 was by far better off angle. My advice is to perform head to head comparisons for your particular needs.

3:45 "Cinephile" $600 price maximum. LOL Your X80K recommendation is an odd one as it's a 60Hz low-quality panel which will struggle with 3:2 pulldown. 60Hz is invariably inferior to 120Hz for 24Hz content. With 120hz, 24FPS can just display each frame 5 times vs trying to figure out how to evenly pace 24 frames 60 times per second. The poor quality of the panel is largely due to its poor contrast, limited backlighting tech with no local dimming. Indeed, Rtings gives the X80K a 5.8/10 (LOL) for HDR movies. (They don't seem to rate "Movies" as a separate category anymore.) Straight from their review: Low native contrast ratio. Poor low-quality content smoothing. And they rate it 5.6 for 24p judder. It's also limited in judder reduction to 24p-native content (i.e. Blu Ray Players that support that feature) and has no detection for frame-matching built in. I'd struggle to imagine a *worse* recommendation for movie watching.

Hey Caleb... I hope you DISMISS what you saw of the Sharp XLED at the shootout and still do your own review of it. I've heard the 'after shootout' talks with the calibraters and some judges saying the XLED just sucked azz. But, I've seen YT reviews from around the world and the few Brian did (especially the individual review), and NONE of them looked like what was seen at the shootout. It HAS to be better than that. Then if it DOES look good, do a comparison between the XLED and QN95C...and maybe even the X95L. That would be awesome! I would love to be able to see the XLED in person but unfortunately the ONLY two places that actually have one in store are thousands of miles away from me. Hopefully the big box stores will get it soon but until then I can only go by the reviews. Thanks

I've been binging all of your videos recently as I'm currently in buy mode. I'm a filmmaker and really love watching movies, I have an LG CX but I'm thinking about making that my monitor for editing and buying a larger TV for movie nightstand game nights in our apartment (daylight/night/blackout curtains). I just finished a pretty decent gig for the first time in a while and would love to buy just an absolute banger of a TV, ideally 77-85". I'm not Mr. Moneybags, I wouuuuuld prefer to keep it as cheap as possible but I'm also thinking of saying screw it, get the best. So I'm tossed between an expensive boi, like the X95K/X93L or an A80L, one being mini-LED the other OLED, but currently the same price. Or say "nah I don't need to buy THAT much TV, get the QM8, it's half the price." But I'm really lusting after Sony's image processing. Any advice? Thank you!

About the plasma, same boat. First of all, with Netflix I did an A/B with Chrome which is locked to 720p 1Mbps and IE which used Dolby Vision 4k 16Mbps. I played the same shows and windows has the ability to Alt-Tab giving you instantaneous A/B. I made it blind because my browser themes are all black for an OLED to reduce burn-in. I could not tell the difference except when I paused and in Planet Earth I saw more foliage. Other than that, it was near impossible to detect the difference. Now, at one point I started celebrating because I could see so much difference but Chrome had dropped to 330Kbps (1/3rd the bitrate) and it was awful. Why did it drop when my connection to that laptop is 500Mbps, and literally 1,500 times higher than Netflix needed, I don't know.😁 As for your TV, that same OLED on the laptop, I took it and placed it on my lap and did a lot of comparisons with my old 2014 Sony LED TV (IPS, Quantum Dot, 1080p) same window size (OLED on bottom, Sony on top). I expected the OLED to massacre my TV. At first the OLED was super bright compared to it but I turned off the light sensor on the Sony and pushed brightness to max. The OLED is not a regualr OLED TV because it's 15 inches and it can hit any brightness it wants full screen so it can do 1,000 nits all day long (but it will burn in). Again, I expected the OLED to crush the LED even in brightness. I compared a lot of stuff - Casino Royale is great because it has 3 scenes in the intro - one the colorful cards with inky blacks, then a bathroom black and white almost scene and the office scene (super dark). I also did Venice Carnival in 4K HDR 60P by Jacob + Katie Schwartz because the highlights are blinding even in SDR and OLEDs would normally die there except for this laptop. Well, let me say that the 2014 IPS during the day matched the Super OLED and was pushing bright highlights in SDR that are hard to explain. When it came to blacks even in the Casino Royale scenes, the Sony IPS looked identical. I think our eyes see blacks as perfect when there's a certain threshold of light - I don't what number that is but it's probably around 100 lux or so meaning one light bulb will turn the IPS into an OLED tv from our eyes' perspectives. Using equipment, you will see the difference and perhaps cats can also see the difference but most, if not all, humans cannot which explains why IPS monitors and phones represent the most manufactured panels. Yesterday, I was at Costco and I was marveling at how beautiful the A80L and C3 looked on their own. Then I walked to the side-by-side section and saw the Samsung S90C and Sony X90L side-by-side. I expected the S90C to give the X90L a huge beating which it did from an angle but looking at them straight, I could actually see the S90C struggle for brightness in the Costco promotional videos. The S90C seemed to have brighter reds but not blues so skies and water seemed to look better on the X90L. If brightness and color was the same, I might have picked the X90L in a blind test and I suspect most people would have. I walked around and found a larger S90C and X90L and they had the same behavior so it wasn't a setting or a panel. I took pictures and videos to remind myself that I saw what I saw and can go back and look at it. About the plasma, set brightness to max and watch some bright content (use the flamethrower or explosions in IGN's Call Of Duty Vanguard single player campaign review on youtube), then measure the brightness. If it hits close to 900 nits in SDR, the image is dynamic enough to present a vivid, contrasting image no matter what. For instance, the content I mentioned looks flat on the standard iPad despite its crazy 500 nit brightness because it cannot elevate the brightness to 900 nits in the explosions. The reason I say that is the blacks are amazing and almost perfect on the Kuro but the brightness may not be there. I use my light sensor on my Sony but in explosions it still hits 400-500 nits at night with a bit of bias lighting.

So did you like the S90C better over the X90L?
@techsamurai11
@techsamurai11 9 ай бұрын
@@asole100 I just looked at the videos and pictures I took and I thought for a moment the S90C looked brighter but I checked the price and it was the X90. They are in store mode so it's hard to compare. But I would need very wide angles so the S90C would work better for me but I would take a X90L if it had better angles at the 60% price. I wouldn't even think about it because it's so hard to tell the difference except in a completely dark room which I don't have. Movie theaters are criminally bad in terms of contrast and yet we don't scream "omg how could I watch this here! Get me an IMAX sized OLED screen or give me a refund right now!"😄 The X90L's darks are 70,000 which is 70 times darker than a movie theater. Subtitles, however, could bother me the most. I might pay the premium for subtitles if the X90L bloomed a lot. But I can't test that. I wish everyone had a subtitle test which showed how subtitles look in the dark and during the day. It's quite ironic that subtitles and angles are the main things I'm concerned about. Sure the S90C may have better blacks but the X90L pumps out the brightness where the S90C struggles so in that regards the blacks are offset by the extra brightness. LEDs have come a loooong way for subtitles and angles to be the main differentiators.
