----------------
In 2015, Scott Adams, the cartoonist behind the massively popular comic strip Dilbert, boldly predicted that Donald Trump would win the 2016 presidential election.
"The reason I can see it coming is because I have studied this field of persuasion," says Adams. "I saw this Trump character and he had the full tool set." The 60-year-old Bay Area resident doesn't agree with Trump on many political issues, but his prediction was enough for his to receive death threats from embittered Hillary Clinton supporters.
Adam's new book, Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter, is both a detailed analysis of how Trump reframed political rhetoric during the 2016 campaign and a guide to how all of us can communicate more effectively and persuasively.
Adams sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie in front of a live audience in San Francisco to talk about his book, his "extreme liberal" views, the popularity of his live broadcasts with followers via Twitter, and why Trump is a "master persuader."
Cameras by Zach Weismueller, Paul Detrick, and Justin Monticello. Edited by Ian Keyser.

I'm a personality junkie: I believe the debate between the Right and left is: Rational vs Emotional. Whenever someone is emotional they make the wrong decision. It's not until you get passed the emotional stage (let those feelings out!) that you can make a decision. He is right most people are emotional. That's why most people are NOT IN CHARGE. Emotional people like staying comfortably , wallowing in the emotions and never getting to a solution, even if they say they want to get a solution. Ex: That Nail in Forehead Woman vs Man video. I blame letting anyone into college. We can still have equal opportunity but think: Should Sally who likes to cook and talk about makeup be in the philosophy class?

That's very clever to compare Trump to a rabid paedophile. However, it ignores the fact that on December 21st 2017 Trump signed an executive order that declares a State of Emergency and specifically goes after human traffickers (and paedophiles), which has resulted in thousands of arrests and the confiscation of huge amounts of cash by the Treasury. Would a paedophile have signed that order? Seriously?

I remember there was a story of a politician that discussed his plan and vision on what he could do for his state, and more widely for the nation. His secretary replied by saying something to the effect of "Everyone who is rational will see how your plan will be of great benefit to them and the country." The politician then replied "That's all well and good, but I need a majority to win the election."

Trump was a disaster from Day 1: N. Korea got nuclear capabilities, Iran enriched uranium and is months away from a bomb, California lost 1 million acres of burned timber - all federal land - because of Trump's blunders, he named one Russian agent to head our national security and another to run his campaign, he broke up NATO and attacked allies while cosying up to Putin. He cut taxes for the rich and companies while raising funding for failed military projects like the $2 trillion F35 and when he lost - he was down hugely in every poll - he lied about it and destroyed faith in our democracy. Oh, he also eliminated the office of pandemic preparedness and said the COVID was a mild flu that would disappear by Summer. What a selfish, incompetent ass. Scott! Up yours for supporting him.

If there is no welfare, there is no need for borders. He immediately contradicted himself. You can come in, so long as you aren’t a fugitive or carrying super-AIDS. Well, how are you going to keep fugitives and super-AIDS patients out if you have a wide open border? Any immigration restriction HAS to come with border security or it’s unenforceable.
@carolm62

"Open Borders" has never meant no borders and free entry for criminals. Never. Gary Johnson was explicit about this during his campaign but all the emotional people insisted he meant something that he didn't.

Weak borders hurt the immigrant as well as the citizen. Open borders aren't as benevolent as it's marketed by libertarians. Not that the immigrants that the United States would be welcoming in with an open border would be inherently malevolent, but the resources aren't ready for such boom in national growth in population.

Self defense is not immoral. There are other cultures that, sometimes religiously, seek our cultural and physical destruction and enslavement. The middle east was once Christian. Where are they now? In the ground or violently forced into submission. This issue is like the topic of the 2nd amendment. If we are free and have inalienable rights then we have the right to self defense. An empty piece of land to develop you find everywhere. This is part of the globalist, cultural marxist agenda. To deny us our right to sovereignty. Even if you seek to take our sovereignty from us and serve the globalist agenda know that you will swim through an ocean of blood before you take away our right to a nation. If you have no border you have no nation.

Though I strongly disagree with him on many aspects of Trump, and on some of his epistemic views (listen to his conversation with Sam Harris on the ‘Waking Up’ podcast, and you’ll probably be at a loss for words), he is very intelligent, and makes many good points. I was actually relieved to hear many of his political positions and ideas. For one thing, I agree with many of them, and for another it was a relief to find that he wasn’t actually pro-Trump, but those positions are less important to me than some of the points he has to make. Probably most important, and most factual, of the points he makes are those concerning reason. He’s absolutely correct, both philosophically (as was pointed out by Hume in the 18th century) and scientifically, that people aren’t rational and/or driven by reason. Though emotions absolutely do “trump” reason, one should be careful to not completely doubt/deny our capacity for reason, especially if we’re aware of our cognitive biases, and/or critical thinkers. ✌🏼

Scott Adams amazes me, in that while I think he’s so spot on, and so insightful, in a variety of ways, but in many ways (particularly those concerning Trump) he’s just so grossly incorrect, seemingly unaware of the biases that he’s studied and talks about. Ive been looking for a liberal to learn from without rolling my eyes in frustration and i think scott adams is that person. I dont agree with a lot of his politics, but i do find it refreshing to listen to a Democrat that speaks without emotional exaggeration. If the left wants people to take their ideas more seriously, this is how they should do.

Painful.. I thought this was REASON TV. Scott having to try and explain Reason, and human perspective, and no one getting it.. ? sad and painful. Yeesh guys, where is the objectivity? Scott's not perfect, he admits it.. He is far more reasonable than this interview, imo. Thoughts?

"humans are not rational" - the cornerstone statement to start the narrative and base other things on it interviewer - what is the evidence to support this thesis? SA: carries on with empty blurb with NO evidence quoted to support the cornerstone thesis the guy is a con man and why is the audience laughing without calling him out on what he 's saying with NO factual basis?

I used to subscribe to Reason. The idea that a mind that advocates reason can support killing your own children & call it "reproductive rights" shows how juvenile the movement is. Indeed, the person I know most involved in libertarianism is a childless 40-something with a "girlfriend" who doesn't want kids - ie dysfunctional, damaged. Meanwhile, we social conservatives will keep the population going...as we import immigrants many of whom won't assimilate, thanks to others not having enough kids.

His views on abortion: he basically advocates for men to have ZERO birth control rights. If he or his own son were forced into 20 years of child support, I’d like to see if his opinion changed. MEN HAVE Z. E. R. O. REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS.

he spent around a decade raising a stepchild with his ex. He also doesn't give advice on abortion. He says women should come together for the abortion decisions (conservative and liberal), and men should step aside so the final decision can look credible from the 2 political sides.

My level of respect for Scott Adams went way way down. He has a sickening slavish appreciation for Trump's ability to lie. He sees it as a virtue that facts don't matter. That is horrific. His conversation with Sam Harris was shameful, pathetic, and absurd. Adams is part of the problem and represents a scary cynicism.

He doesn't see it as a virtue that facts don't matter, he simply points out that (for persuasion) they don't. It's a fact. And seeing how it didn't persuade you just proves that point.
