I’m currently shopping for an entry level machine and am focusing on the GCP. This looked great up until I saw the price point. At that price, it seems silly that they couldn’t give us a few more inches of clearance under the group head and a better designed drip tray.

I’d be more likely to get a gcp or Silvia and add PID and flow control to it. This does definitely seem like a great value for people who don’t want to mod their machines though!

Dunno, it feels like a less advanced version of the Breville dual boiler at a higher price point with compromises around the steam wand and cup clearance. It is nice to see a more thought out machine rather than just another slapped together e61 though.

The Mio looks more like a Quick Mill Silvano imo, with an Ascaso style PID. Cool combo tho
@Gk2003m
@Gk2003m Жыл бұрын
So the Mio…. A boiler for water, a separate thermoblock for steam. A pressure gauge *and* a PID. An easily accessible and adjustable OPV. Does the PID adjust to single degrees? The vid showed it going ten degrees per button push. Looks like the only missing element is manual flow control, which would allow for pre-infusion. That can be added for ten bucks; wonder why they omitted it.
@KrishnenduKes
@KrishnenduKes 2 жыл бұрын
Wow! This is really tempting over the Gaggia Classic Pro. You have a PID, OPV regulation. Fantastic review. Thank you. Couple of questions: 1. Any solutions for the drip tray to fit a scale and a cup? Bottomless portafilter? 2. Does it have an option of Celsius on the PID.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 жыл бұрын
Right? I think the Gaggia Classic Pro PRO analogy is spot on (if I do say so myself) 1. Yes, a bottomless portafilter would definitely solve the clearance issue. Usually a good strategy for machines like this 2. Yes, you can switch the display to Celsius

I was about to say that it looks alot like a new version of the Quickmill Orione, but makes sense when it's made by Quickmill. It's much cheaper than having specific parts and shapes to for every machine. Currently i have a Quickmill 2820 thermoblock machine at home and am really happy with it. I didn't want a boiler, because i think that it's not worth for a single person house hold to get a boiler to heat up 1l of water each time while only needing 2dl of water.

Great review!! If I attached a paddle/twist handle to the adjustable OPV valve do you think I would be able to achieve some sort of “pressure profiling” with this machine?

While that’s an interesting idea! No, that wouldn’t be a safe way to accomplish a profiled shot. The adjustment isn’t built for that kind of manipulation

I would rather empty my drip tray every day (I do it already on my Barista Express) and have more clearance/shorter tray than not be able to fit most cups under the spouts, very weird design choice. Overall though, for the price, really tempting.

Hmmmm as a the profitec go is the more polished looking machine but this at it's sale price of 1099 currently from seattle coffee gear just has so any more features that are super desirable like the dual wall burn safe steam wand the side loading tank the separate steam function and the pid. Also being able to steam at the same time is a big thing. What a hard choice to make.

For me, this is not a GCP killer. It's a Silvia killer. Its priced competitively with SCG's Silvia w/ PID, but the PID is built in instead of aftermarket and offers simultaneous brewing and steaming. Looks like its designed to target the Ascaso Duo too. This machine is just too expensive to be in the same bracket as the GCP.

@falkmh
@falkmh 2 жыл бұрын
At this price point, a comparison to something like the Lelit Mara X, Ascaso Steel UNO PID / DREAM PID or the ECM Classika PID would be more interesting than a comparison to the way way waaay cheaper GCP. The two questions would be, how the overall feature-set compares to them and (most importantly) how much better will my espresso taste for 3x the money of a GCP? (The combination of the optional thermoblock for steaming and a big-boiler-single-boiler is an idea I really like)

@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 жыл бұрын
This wasn’t intended as a comparison to the GCP, I was make an analogy about the feature set and the mythical “Gaggia Classic PRO” people always say they would love to see (PID, and dual boiler) The true competition in terms of feature set is the Ascaso Steel Duo, and somewhat the Rancilio Silvia Pro X as mention in the conclusion. A GCP with the same grinder, OPV mod, and proper temperature surfing routine can achieve the same quality espresso as any of these machines. The asking price for the higher end stuff comes primarily in terms of convenience, not huge drink quality leaps. The GCP is a great machine for the money for this reason.

The Mio is a Quick Mill Silvano with a slightly different body and PID. It's nice but I am not sure of why they changed the drip tray (the Silvano has a handle that makes removing the tray/drawer much easily). And it's a little more expensive than the Silvano, but many may prefer this new look more than the original.

That's interesting. I hadn't heard of the Silvano and just recently purchased the Mio. After watching this video and looking at the Silvano I think I still prefer the Mio, though I do wish they would've taken another 1/2" off the drip tray to let the steam arm move more easily and to accomodate cups with scales better.

6:32 temperature stability should be most affected by the boiler size. When brewing coffee, around 40ml cold water goes into the boiler. So the amount of hot water inside affects the temperature. Does that make the boiler position a less important factor?

Most machines are not pulling cold water into the boiler while brewing. After the shot, you’ll hear the pump kick on a second time. This is the machine refilling the boiler after the shot / steaming session. So the phenomenon you’re describing doesn’t actually occur

this product seems great, However, if they truly wanted to compete with the GCP They need to be priced lower, for this price I could get a GCP to upgrade it and get a few cans of spray paint. Hell I could get a silvia

I was expecting a price point to be a bit lower as this is being compared to a GCP… at $1300 this is a deal breaker for sure. I just picked up a new GCP from Amazon for $350 this past Memorial Day. I’ll gladly spend an extra $150 and add my own PID. Thanks for the awesome review on this though!

Engineers for coffee machines what are y'all doing fr, I am starting to believe if you can't land a proper job in ID you just clone yet another espresso machine. I read spec and i dont like the non-brass boilers, i like the Bello but at that prices a rocket or emc its a better option. The mio is good for a beginer but if I had to choose I prefe the Gaggia clasica pro. My giaggia is 7 plus year old and works as good as my rocket

This looks like a really nice machine to be sure but are Gaggia buyers really cross shopping this device? The price points are WAY off. There are other $1,200 machines that I think will get cross shopped instead. I would be worried about resale with this unit and for that reason wont consider it.

I am not too sure what SCG is thinking. They already have the Rancilio Silvia PID Espresso Machine for $1,159, so why bother with this one for $1,299? The only real difference I see between the two is that the Rancilio is not a heat exchange unit. As for me, if I had to choose between the two, I would go with the Rancillo and wait awhile longer for steamed drinks. I also think this should be under a thousand dollars if they want to move the unit.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 жыл бұрын
This is not a heat exchanger either. It is a boiler + a separate thermoblock for steaming. The Mio is a much smoother workflow than a Silvia with PID. Also has a pressure gauge, the external OPV adjustment, no burn steam wand, better drip tray… lots of little differences that I think definitely make it worth an extra $150
@louisd95714
@louisd95714 2 жыл бұрын
@@LifestyleLab_ Understood about the points you are making, but I still think it should be priced less. The Sylvia is such a well known name in the espresso world that I doubt the Mio at its present price point would entice potential customers to choose it when there's the Sylvia for less money. But that is only my take of it.

I love your content and detailed videos, but lets be honest. Same boiler size and functionality, same switch to turn off steam pump, same front grouphead OPV adjustment, same side loading water tank, same dimensions, same PID functionality, reduced cup clearance by 1/4" and reduced clearance of the steam wand for $100 more than the Silvano Evo. The only reason to buy this over the Silvano Evo is the looks, which is fine, but let's be honest that they are 95% similar.

Heat up time of more than 2-3 minutes is a Joke IMHO for ANY design for the home, literally tech from the 1800s-1900s... really just not good at all! Honestly some company needs to release a coffee machine that is just up to date, if you guys knew how cheap it is to build a GOOD espresso machine...

The boiler takes 2-3 minutes, it’s the surrounding metal that takes longer to heat up to the appropriate temperature for stable brewing. Yes, you can add active heaters, but that will of course add cost and a failure point
