love this build man, really really clean. I've got an old kz440 basket case I've been trying to piece back together into a cafe/brat

Garrett Walters You just gotta do it man! It's a pain in the ass most of the time and it will make you a poor man but the pay off in the end is worth every hardship.

I just bought one and it’s a bit of a fixer upper, the main issue i have run into though is less mechanical and more electric. If you still have your bike do you have any advise for how to mount all of the fuse boxes and wiring harness?

I also love this build. I'm getting ready to buy an 81 kaw 440 did you have the frame cut to accommodate the seat?

+Colin Patience Hey there! Glad you like it! An answer to your question, yes I did cut the frame down to make the seat fit. But, I didn't necessarily do it properly... Most people would have welded on a hoop after the cut, but I was more concerned with riding than welding! I rode around with a chopped up frame, I'm sure the structural integrity was somewhat compromised. I have since sold the bike and am now PROPERLY building a 78 KZ750 (the 440's big brother). The tail section has been cut and a hoop welded on. Here is a link so you can check it out: imgur.com/a/s6LUH Any competent welding shop should be able to do this! Clean Mig welds and it was dirt cheap. Hopefully this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Very nice and clean 440 ltd. I like the master cylinder setup I have clubmans on mine with the old master and its very large. I'm running the Mac 2-2 and sound good no jetting. I am interested in knowing what seat you went with, and did you remove the inner plastic rear fender? Awesome Bike

Mike Koopa Thanks Mike! This build was made possible by ordering a lot of parts through Dime City Cycles. The seat is one of their fiberglass pans (I believe the Thruxton model) that I simply had upholstered. The plastic fender was retained! Part of it at least... After I shortened the frame I simply cut down the plastic fender as well, cut a few holes, and zip tied the sucker to the crossover bar at the rear of the frame. Simple fix and it still looks clean, and keeps its function. I still hail the front break master cylinder as one of the best additions to date. Coupled with the stainless steel break line it tidies up the front end nicely and is way more reliable than the OEM lines and fittings. I'd definitely recommend it. Thanks again for the interest and I'm sure your bike is awesome as well!

Do you recommend or did you lower the fork? by the way thanks for your replies
@dillonfischer1113
@dillonfischer1113 8 жыл бұрын
+Colin Patience Haha no worries Im like, crazy passionate about this sort of stuff. I did lower the forks, but only by clamping the triple tree a bit lower on the forks. I know you can cut the springs inside to actually make the forks shorter, but I was too afraid of making them too short, not to mention I dont trust myself to do that type of thing properly haha. I would definitely recommend lowering them one way or another, if for nothing else then for the cafe stance that is so attractive (lifting the rear, lowering the front) Just make sure that your front wheel doesnt get too close to the exhaust pipes when turning or otherwise. That could end up badly!

I purchased a 1982 Kz440 D Belt Drive a couple of months ago and seem to be having some issues. I found the Voltage Regulator was not providing enough volts to recharge the Battery and then after Replacing it I found the Battery was bad. Now that I've replaced the Battery it ran great for a few days and now I find again Low Voltage and Battery not being charged enough or so it seems some times. Today I went for a short ride and after 10 miles shut it off and was unable to restart it due to low battery. After bump starting it and riding it back home from the 10 mile trip I shut it off and to my surprise able to start it without charging the Battery. I've ridden it twice since having the problem and both times it's started from the Battery. At first I thought it might be the Stator/Alternator but now not sure. The bike runs without the battery connected but Idle's a little rough. The only Stator/Alternator's I've been able to locate are Used so I will be calling or sending Messages to those selling with questions before I purchase. Any idea's about what else might be causing the low voltage problem?

Hey there, sorry you've been experiencing these problems man I know it can be rough. Honestly from what you've said in this post, I'd say take a look at your regulator rectifier unit. I finished a KZ750 a while back and had a bunch of charging issues due to a bad r/r, and then even worse problems when I didn't properly ground the aftermarket one I purchased. I always found it helpful to completely redo the wiring on these old bikes yo you can really easily diagnose problems that arise. It's really not as hard as you think, and if you are in to working on these old bikes, the knowledge gained from a total rewire is so damn useful. Best of luck, I'm not sure if the advice will help but it's just so hard to tell sometimes.

After replacing the Stator my Starter was the next problem. The magnets in the starter came loose and caused the starter to short out Draining the battery. I have purchased a used Starter off ebay and it arrives tomorrow. I hope that solves my charging problems!

Now the issue is it seems to be out of time and the starter doesn't seem to have the power to turn the bike over. I'm at a complete loss as to what the problem of not being able to turn the motor over properly. Not even with the spark plug wires disconnected from the plugs (plugs still in the motor). Let me know if I'm wrong, the Starter should turn over the motor even if it is not getting a spark?

Hey there. I want to trouble shoot some things with you to help you out, but I feel like messaging back and forth on the video isn't going to get us anywhere fast. I tried to send a personal message to your youtube account but it's not letting me... So against my better judgement (putting personal info up for everyone to see haha) here is an old email address of mine: dillonp13@msn.com. Why don't you send me a message there, and we can set up a time to speak on the phone. Might be the easiest way to come up with a game plan.

Appreciate the beta. I guess since you've sold it you won't mind if I copy the build almost to a tee? I'm new to the "game" and am afraid to come up with a half-assed build and while I'm not being that creative I'd be plenty happy riding that bike

+Colin Patience Not only would I not mind, but here is a parts list from Dime City Cycles that should help you out: GALFER K7 UNIVERSAL STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINE GALFER 40 DEGREE SHORT K7 STAINLESS STEEL BANJO FITTING GALFER STRAIGHT K7 UNIVERSAL THREADED BRAKE BANJO FITTING 13.20" (335MM) BLACK AND CHROME EYE TO EYE SHOCK ABSORBERS 7/8" UNIVERSAL NISSIN HYDRAULIC FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER - (BLACK ELECTROPLATE, 14MM PISTON) TC BROS "CATS EYE" 20MM AXLE MOUNTED LICENSE PLATE BRACKET - (GLOSS BLACK) LIGHTWEIGHT CHROME HEADLIGHT MOUNTING BRACKETS 33MM STANDARD TAROZZI CLIP-ON HANDLEBARS LEGENDARY MOTORCYCLES ABS PLASTIC "THRUXTON" CAFE RACER SEAT PAN (cut to size) But the engine is the most important thing, right? Just make sure you tune it perfectly or it will loose a whole bunch of low end power. Bigger jets if you're running pods and stuff of that nature. Timing and valves should be checked and all serviced to the specifications in your manual. Obvious stuff I know, but I remember just how much I didn't know (and still don't know haha) when I started working on these old bikes.

hafeez iqbaluddin Hey sorry for the late reply! I try not to push it too hard... I figure the nicer I am to it, the longer it will last me! I think I pushed it to 65 not too long ago when I was taking it around my home town for the first time. Not a sport bike at all but so much character!

Pod filters would run like shit on those CV carbs, so at least you were smart and left the stock air box. Ergonomically that thing sucks. Leaving the factory midsets in combo with the clip ons was stupid. Spent all that money having a body shop do paint for you, should have stepped up for a rearset conversion. I'm guessing you don't ride for more than 10 minuets at a time on that bike, because that would be hell on your hips. The KZ440 is a good bike, but really not good for a cafe build, makes a better bobber if anything. The KZ400 would make a better cafe build. No turn signals, hope you don't get plowed by a car that does not know your turning.
