Dimash's reverence for his own culture's music is reflected here, however his Master's thesis at university was about global culture's indigenous and ethnic folkloric music and instruments, and varieties of them are used throughout his musical performances and his compositions.

This is a folk song about the suffering of the Kazakh people during the first World War. They were forced to enlist in the Russian army, their lands were taken from them and this song is about a young man walking from Kazakhstan to the russian city of Omsk to enlist.

Real, sad story behind this song. Young Kazakhs forced to leave their homeland Kazachstane and go to war that was not their war, forced by Russian empire.

Apart from the glorious voice and the wonderful cultural instruments the special effects in this concert are epic as well.. 🌺🌹

From unknoun composer, lyrics gives a clue about his origin: Samal tau; North of Kazakhstan; and a clue about his age: “born in the year of the cow” 1888. The author woul be 28 y.o. when the first W.W began. A song that could not be sung in the times when Kazajhstan was part of the Soviet Union Dimash brought it back to grand stages.

The lyrics are sad because they refer to when in 1916 the Russians recruited young Kazakhs and forced them to fight in the First World War. According to the lyrics, a young man who marches towards the battle zone thinks about what awaits him and suffers for what will happen to his parents, who are old and left alone, and who may not return alive. On the way he also thinks that it will be the last time he will see his house and his beautiful mountains. For Dimash, family union and love for her is one of the greatest things, hence the difficulty in interpreting it. The Russian tsar and recruiters treated us like cattle (they didn't feed us, they kept us in unsanitary conditions). A deep song reflecting the constant political struggles of his homeland. Such a captivating performance from Dimash which as usual makes my breathing patterns become somewhat irregular.

It's well worth watching the original performance at the Silk Road Festival, and also at the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020, these are the two best versions imho. This is KOPUZ, TURKIC Inst. Kazakistan, Türkmenistan, Kırgızistan, Azerbaycan, Türkiye…..use this inst. All Turk’s know this.

First time I am not happy with how the clip was produced. During the final part (here 5:30) instruments are too loud, you can hear Dimash but clarity is not great. Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020 version is way better.
