When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia (in mid-1916), young Kazakhs were forced by the Russian Empire to leave their homes and fight for many years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who marches desperately towards a war that is not his, as well as the sadness of leaving his older parents with no one to care for and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again again spawned this wonderfully sad song!

I think they both have their own charm. The Tokyo one is intimate. It's cool to see what he can do sitting down like that. His lungs are indestructible.

This version has the whirlwind round him which to me depicts the explosions of war going on, so it’s atmospheric.

I like both versions. But swapping the rain stick for the piano, I'm ok with that. But I still miss the rain stick noises in this one.

I like all versions, but prefer the Tokyo Jazz version to this one. The special effects are too distracting for me. I actually like his very first performance of this song at the Silk Road International Film Festival in China the best. I was completely enchanted by the musicians, the song, and Dimash’s performance, as well as the spectacularly atmospheric stage setting. It was the first time I had heard the qobyz and it surprised me how much it could be made to sound like baying wolves.
