Since monarchy is abolished, president is elected through electoral collage with a 5 year term plus another and called as first citizen for the highest position he holds. Canada/Australia though being democratic for electing government, they are not republic since their head of state is Queen and not a elected president. President is the head of state who is responsible for protecting constitution, moderating legislature houses(VP does it for RS) and amending legislation, protecting territory by heading the armed force who can declare war, appoints state governors, central (PM and Cabinet) and state(Through governor) can also dissolve it and declare emergency, heads government educational institutions, appoints chief justices of SC and HC, appoints head for most of independent orgs like election commission and RBI also appointment of IAS cadres for various administrations. He is more like Chairman for board of directors who don't involve in day to day operations of the government but responsible for protecting the state, welfare and interest of the citizens. Prime minister is head of the government who is also head for cabinet ministers in appointment. PM and cabinet recommends people to President for appointment of various posts. As part of members of parliament they can sponsor bills which comes to effect after passes both legislative houses and President signs it. He is more like CEO who runs the country and handles day to day affairs but answerable to the President who in turn is answerable to the people. But unfortunately president is appointed through internal understanding between parties so he never crosses the line with PM though he has all powers to do so.
