Dangerous USB phone chargers 11 (fake vs. real)

Opening another pair of USB chargers. One is a real Samsung charger, the other is a very cheap fake charger from eBay. Let's see what surprises and hazards are hidden inside. Including the schematic. Some chargers may not comply with safety regulations, they may cause an electric shock or fire. Their current rating may be fake, the output voltage may be wrong and they can cause electromagnetic interference or damage your devices.

this black charger deserves a new category, it earned the trophy for the worst charger ever tested. Judging by it, I assume it's safer to insert a fork into the wall outlet rather than using this charger, because the fork will quickly trigger the breaker, and this charger will quickly destroy your smartphone or other load it's powering.
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 2 жыл бұрын
That charger was by far the best charger I've ever seen, in terms of how badly built a charger can be. It could supply about 100-150mA only before the voltage dropped too low - how useful is that?! Even older smartphones (from about 2012 - 2014?) that only needed about 0.7A (or so) to charge properly, wouldn't charge on 0.15A. And of course modern smartphones require 2A for standard charging, and probably won't charge very well at all if given under 1A (at 5V).

man I love that first psu. its been ages since I saw something so bad, where everything is wrong. death transformer, under-rated components, design/manufacturing errors, its has everything you could wish for in a super dodgy power supply. I particularly enjoyed the 2.5V cap and the 1N4148 on the secondary side.
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 2 жыл бұрын
I particularly enjoyed the transformer, it was the best one I've seen on this channel! I've seen on early videos how some transformers have no isolation between secondary and auxiliary, but this one has no isolation between ANY of the windings - secondary, auxiliary and primary! That on its own was well worth it, but then the other problems made it even worse!

The voltage rating of the output capacitor is 2.5V, very likely a polymer capacitor recycled from some old PC motherboard. The current drawn by it due to the overvoltage, might also be another reason of the super low output current.
@DiodeGoneWild

If the capacitor had a massive leakage current, it would get hot. This one was cool. But it would probably fail in a long run anyway.

Yeah that black charger just about does everything wrong. 2.5V cap on 5V output, other cap soldered the wrong way, 1N4148 diode on the output (rated 150mA only), super deadly transformer with no isolation at all, the list goes on!
@firefox1136
@firefox1136 2 жыл бұрын
With the super dodgy charger they really didn't care at all, they didn't put ANY insulation in the transformer. This is even more extreme than in the other super dodgy chargers, where they had some insulation between the primary and auxiliary. Great video and thanks for showing us the dodgyest possible transformer yet.
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I said when I first watched this. At least in the other death-chargers (fake Apple, original video, video #2 and video #3) there was isolation between primary and secondary (but not secondary-auxiliary). This time there was nothing between ANY of the windings! And of course let's not forget the inappropriate 1N4148 diode on the output and the 2.5V capacitor on a 5V output. That will definitely (if left on for long periods) blow up whatever it is connected to.

@@crashbandicoot4everr I know, especially given how the output voltage started becoming unstable due to the capacitor being run in reverse. Though when it only manages to provide about 150mA before the voltage drops too low, it's not really suitable for anything. I like this one particularly as I’m always telling people to be careful not to buy fake / cheap chargers; it’s so tempting when you see the difference in cost, but when you consider the output could potentially damage your expensive device, or worse still start a fire in your home, it’s just not worth it! Thank you for your time, hard work and for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Also bear in mind that some manufacturers do not include chargers with their phones, so you have to buy a replacement. It's almost as if someone decided to make ALL the mistakes when designing this charger. Just makes me glad I always keep old chargers from phones I no longer use. It amazes me people will spend £800 on a phone then buy the cheapest charger off AliExpress or eBay to charge it.

It's not surprising when some companies (Samsung and Apple are examples) won't supply a charger with their phones! So they have to get their charger from somewhere, but don't want to spend extra £20-30 on a genuine charger... hence getting a cheapy off eBay/Amazon/AliExpress etc.

Samsung are doing this as well, and in fact I've just read an article today that infers Samsung will stop supplying chargers with ALL phones - not just the expensive ones! So people buying a £150 phone won't get a charger, and instead will try and get the cheapest one they can from elsewhere. They won't buy a £20 or £30 charger from Samsung when their phone only cost £150. In fact, the first charger I saw on eBay when typing in "usb phone charger" was one of the copycat Apple style ones (with a UK plug) which has probably already been covered on this channel, and will either be "dodgy" or "super dodgy"!

If you try putting 2.5V into a phone, it won't even recognize the input. Li-Ion batteries need to be stored at least 3.0V - 4.2V, though some newer devices use "high voltage" cells up to 4.45V. Therefore, if you only supply 2.5V, it won't even be able to charge a bare Li-Ion cell, let alone deal with the phone circuitry. There's a reason why USB is designed to be 5V, and not 2.5V...

@@TheSpotify95 Yes of course, I know, this was only a joke, saying that in this case, the capacitor will not be stressed too much!

Would fixing the inverted capacitor increase the output current? I assume fixing the 2.5v one wouldn't help much with that though
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 2 жыл бұрын
Worrying about an inverted or under-rated capacitor really would be the least of your worries when the transformer has absolutely no isolation inside of it! If the transformer overheats, then the windings can (and will) make contact, causing the output to become live at mains voltage.

@@TheSpotify95 Yes I know, I am just thinking about the rated output current. The transformer not having good isolation is dangerous but shouldn't be the reason that charger only outputs 200mA

@@estanho Yeah, so what I would do is change the 2.5V capacitor to be where the reverse capacitor was (and actually solder it the right way around), having the 10V capacitor on the output. At least then the output won't be dragged too low. Or better still, get a much better charger!

11:43 Yes!!! That's a fantastic transformer, the best type of transformer that money can buy! We haven't seen this since "dangerous USB phone chargers 3"! Fantastic, it's made a comeback! edit: It's even better, there's no isolation whatsoever between ANY of the windings! This hasn't been seen before on this channel! You're isolated just by the thin lacquer on the wire, which is super small, super thin, and is not designed to be the only isolation between mains and humans! Super dodgy!
