I don't have much space indoors at the moment so instead of bringing in the whole plant for the winter... I will just take some cuttings.

A 'Aloha Mandevilla ' Forever Red plant cost here in New Zealand ...NZD$50.00 which I think is really expensive so making cutting from them are a great way to say money!

I use a clear plastic bucket and a tray. I put pot on a tray and the plastic bucket over it. This way the leaves can't touch the plastic wall's that become moist. When leaves tought the bag they will start to rot very quickly. The plastic thing i use is as large as my table, so there can be more then one pot under them. Because the plastic is hard i can put a second one on top of this to minimise the space i'm using (i only have one large window on the north side). I use this construction for 2 or 3 week's depending on the cutting's (for clematis or coleus i don't use it at all). But also as you said, opening it up for a couple of hours to get the moisture right. In the beginning there is a lot of moisture inside the ground and air can get to moist. If you only have zip bags, no problem. Just put some sticks inside the pot that are larger than the cutting, this way you protect it a bit from the plastic walls. (The buckets what i'm using are for storing stuff and are very cheap to find, like $1.50) You can also make holes in the side's and cover them in the beginning with tape. And every day you peel the tape a little back so a new hole opens up to give the plant a bit more fresh/less moist air. My plant growing kit has a sliding door that can cover the wholes, but some tape does also the trick. Ps: I also breeth a couple of times inside the bucket, with moist air and co2. Don't know if it helps, but there are people that say talking to your plants really works, so i just breeth like i'm darkfader from starwars after watering.

That's the best instruction how to propagate Mandevilla so far! Thank you so much! I've been trying for years to keep the plant inside during winter time (Canada) - in basement, on the covered porch, in my bedroom - to have the same plant next year - no luck, the plant dies. I will definitely buy the new one this year and will follow your instruction. Great job! Thanks a lot!

I live in Canada. I have 2 beautiful mandevillas for the last17 years. All you have to do is bring in the plant with pot inside in the fall. Water sparingly during the winter months and start fertilizing in April. Mine are at least 5 feet which I trim every year.

I have no clue how to take care of it. Can you give me some ideas? I have been pruning off the climbing vine so they don’t attack my Curtains. I hope that is okay. They keep Growing back Thanks!

Thabk you for this... Ive had a hard time overwintering mine. P.S. Why gardeners DON'T wear gloves: We work largely by FEEL. Gloves are in the way if that. We would much rather experience a little skin irritation or a thorn prick than not be able to feel what we're doing.

Kara Rowe lack of light is the main reason why the leaves become like what you describe. I used to keep it inside at winter and I got the same problem. This winter I have kept it outside, therefor more light, and no yellow lime leaves. A leaves’ fall is normal though during the winter. This plant can resist until 5 degrees Celsius. Below this temperature it dies. In case the temperature drops that much, you can cover it with a white or transparent plastic paper (made up of breathe through fabric is preferable, you can find them at shops asking for winter “protections” for plants). Don’t water it too much as if it was full summer. You’ll see that at spring time it will get better. Cut few branches like in the video and plant them besides (or in another pot), so you don’t waste any. Good luck ;-)
