In this episode of DiResta’s Cut, Jimmy creates a storage unit that will incorporate old metal bins he found on the street. He gives you some useful tips for creating a router jig to cut consistent dadoes, explains when not to do math, rigs up some DIY steel edgebanding and finishes it off with brass screws.

They make undersized router bits, but your solution is much more elegant. Those bins look super cool. Loved the video.

Very interesting how you create your dado's. I've always used a radial arm or table saw. It's always nice to see someone show you something that is so clever, that your left wondering "why didn't I think of that years ago"! And I actually have a router template kit that would do exactly that! Awesome job man!

Reminds me of the parts bin my grandfather had set up. He used the old metal 1 gallon oil cans, cut off one side and rolled in the edges, and had a set of shelves on either side of the door into his shop that he set up specifically for those. Remember going through those cans for the odd nut or bolt for whatever project I was building under his supervision at the time.

Jimmy, I really like the one. I think it would be bad ass if you made one just like it, except with drawers that had the same steel band on the edges and the brass screws around the edges. I agree with someone else that said Diresta's cut is the only reason I subscribe to this channel. I love your work.

The bins were a great find. I have a feeling you would enjoy being a garbageman, like I used to be. I found lots of great stuff on the job. Too bad, these days it's all going to automated, and the guys don't even get out of the trucks anymore. Lotsa useful stuff going into the landfill. Nice job on the storage unit.

I hesitate to critique in any way, but literally the only thing I don't absolutely love about this is the exposed screws on the outside plywood. This would look good under a work bench built in a similar style. My step dad built drawers to go under his discount store work benches "leg kits" as there were no add on options for these kits. In the industrial McMaster Carr work benches, there are a lot of choices like a drawer stack or a locking metal cabinets to hold large tools. Yes we can build these ourselves but I find that trying to work in time to demo a bench and build storage is hard because we use these work benches daily. I think that in my future life I will make the extra upfront effort to build out whole walls of upper and lower cabinet/benches on the walls of my shop area/garage. I would like to add "I don't want a water heater in my garage again" it needs to be outside I do want a sink with hot/cold running water and I want to be able to run a hose off the faucet to wash cars with hot water. On the subject of steel work benches someone needs to build a "leg kits" that you lay whole 2x4's inside the leg channel to keep the thin cheap steel from bending the wood adds mass making it a more Perfect Union of bench top, in to the legs and in to the concrete floor. When I hit something with a hammer I want it to feel like I'm using a 5# lead shot mallet even if it's a 4oz brass hammer. Peace through heavier hammers

Great build Jimmy! Its always fascinating to see you build stuff but the curiosity still remains as to how you came up with that idea. In this video you showed the sketch you came up with before building it. Could you please show your pre sketches in your future projects?
