Playing Red Orchestra 2 I learned from a veteran to look for what he called "Tree Tumours" like when you see an odd growth on a tree, an odd shape that breaks the silhouette of an object, it's most likely an enemy. He participated in Bosnia and he said it applies to urban warfare, anything that breaks the conformity of the silhouette of a building or rubble is likely a person.

For plinkers out to 250 yards I use glassless peep sights. Been so long I put them in I forgot the name brand. With iron sights you can comfortable hit to 400-500 meters on head size target. Little like a peep sights, just having a circular 1 mm hole at the rear sight. Makes nice aperture and sharpens everything on long distance shooting as long you can visually see the target (what is not the case in > 90% of the situations as targets blend with the surroundings so easily).
@5wum657

@rubke2 3 ай бұрын
@@paristo at 400 meters your iron sight is about the same size as a man standing up. Hitting a headshot at 500 meters using iron sights therefore is just extremely unlikely as the head will be barely even visible to the naked eye and completely covered by your sights.
@paristo
@paristo 3 ай бұрын
@@rubke2 you are mistaking two separate things. 1) target size, rifle precision, sight picture and shooter skill to aim. 2) Shooter capability spotting the target, target definition, target contrast. If you're using a rifle and cartridge combination that precision is 50 cm CEP at 300 meters, you don't hit a thing than by luck. If you're using a combo that has 7 cm, then it is about sight picture can it give you accuracy to do that, where is huge difference between iron sights, and why optical magnifying scopes are huge benefit for most shooters. If one can't see the target, then it can't be shot by purposely aimed manner. One can just assume target position and saturate area randomly trying to be lucky and hit it. It doesn't matter by range if target can't be seen. A target board on open shooting range is not same thing as a camouflaged man hiding in the forest.... One you can see from thousands of meters and aim at it, other you can step on and not realize it....

It's significantly less of a problem when you don't already know that there's someone to look for. That said it's good to keep in mind. Hiding properly in shade, or having some kind of shade over your optic mitigates this problem if a kill flash or some other lens cover isn't available. I wouldn't say getting them is critical. Simply put snipers are always the example used, because what's really happening is that the sniper has already taken a shot, and everyone is scanning the area where that shot came from. In reality you're more likely to be given way by your BEWs than the glint on your LPVO or red dot.

You don’t have to sign your soul away to a government and get bare minimum training (and wages), just to understand field craft. Ask ANYONE who’s been there. These are basic skills and knowledge every man should possess. And some of the best training in the world is contracted through civilian training organizations and programs. Freedom in much of the world has been won by “civilians,” including your own.

@@jackjohnson291 Depends on which branch and what unit, some of those guys are trained very very well, and some of them do get the bare minimum training. Most of the civilian training and supplies can actually be better than anything "military grade". I remember department "hand to hand" combative training, it was lame, compared to what I was able to get on my own. I think even the simplest form of boxing at a gym would have been better than what they were teaching.

@@user-nu8in3ey8c I discovered much the same. It absolutely baffled me how little police officers actually train something like BJJ. I mean, some do it voluntarily. But some of these skills take years upon years to 'master', and then they're like... they do it a few times a year? xD And it's baffling too. Like, I get military personnel not prioritizing unarmed stuff. But a cop? You'd think the ability to safely disable a mildly antagonistic person through chokes and holds(safe for the cop and whoever they're dealing with) should be the gold standard.

This is actually really useful for civilian writers! I kinda stumbled into this as a powerlevel balancing thing. My sci fi protagonist faction has lightbending cloak tech. The enemy faction usually doesn't have the ability to break it beyond looking for the visual distortion with the naked eye or hoping the motion tracker picks them up. However, they do have sonar like scanners that will highlight what the visual cannot corroborate. The problem is this thing makes ambient noise, is bright asl both infrared and visually, and alerts the cloaker by virtue of how the cloak is maintained. Using a cloakbreaker is basically starting a game of "who can kill each other first" as both parties now know exactly where the other is.

I have had an extremely tight budget recently so instead of running a light cap I made one from a prescription bottle. I cut the prescription bottle down, drilled holes in it for elastic cord to run through and knot off. Put multiple coats of the spray camo on it and mount it up. The elastic cord works well to secure it with the proper tension and i can also secure it out of the way with no rattle if it needs to be. Not quite as convenient but it very much works. Also because of the bottle material it glows some around the rear edges if you ND the light lol. Could be useful to prevent melting your light cap. 😅

@@tanker335 Look. I did not look down on tankers during my time. Some tankers might know a thing or two about guns. However, you ignorantly running your mouth really does not help with the "Tanker pretending to be Ranger in front of people outside" stereotype. You and I both know the word "Rambo" and "Cosplay" are description of yourself with an inferiority complex towards peole who actually use rifles for work while you only get to play with M4 once in a while when your unit lets you in between you struggling with replacing tracks. So, let's not pretend you are some sort of expert enough to belittle anyone. People who don't know enough might look at your patch and think you know something just for being in the army, but you and I both know what you're claiming to be, if you actually are what you claim to be that is. If you don't know the effect of desert dust on optics and how screw on kill flash impedes frequent swipes that becomes necessary, it means either you never deployed or you did not do anything significant with a rifle enough to gain such knowledge. What is this? Your first MOS? I have never heard of Delta or Ranger re-enlisting to be a tanker, so that pretty much rules out you being someting "high speed." Shall I go on?

Marine Corps issued Hex caps for the ACOGs when I was in. I liked running it all the time because it brought the brightness down during the daytime adding some depth contrast, too. The other unofficial standard issued item was tape for the optical line because it was far too bright during the day. You’d tape like 90% of the line ontop of the optic and it was good. For your SHTF setup yeah, I’d go with an Optic that is on the expensive end w/prior versions of it involved in actual combat AND has an optic reflection dampener like a Hexagonal cover. You’ll want something that’s durable and doesn’t break if dropped and keeps its zero. If you need a makeshift one out in the field, wrap the scope in stretched nylon from like a neck garment.

Here’s a tip for masking optics, buy a package of black nylon stockings/pantyhose and wrap the end of your optic lens, place a rubber band around the pantyhose and optic bell to hold the lens cover in place and cut the excess pantyhose material off with a knife, scissors, razor blade, you get the point. Now you have a mask for your optics that won’t give your position away. We used this idea for our binoculars when we were out on recon patrols, in observation points, ambush sites.
