Ingenuity at it's finest. To have had this hotter-than-a-$4-pistol illegal AF but brilliant piece of masterful craftsmanship stored in this engineer's home loft since 1992 only to be given to Dale Jr after he said he wanted it, is like having Smoky Yunick point a crooked finger at you, givin' you a sly wink, and lettin' you run wild through the Best Damn Garage in Daytona to take anything you want. Jr is definitely stepping between the raindrops.

I used to work for Dean and I saw this deck lid in the barn everyday. I can assure you he has WAY more stories like this to tell. He worked Leo Jackson in the '90s, Dave Marcis in the '80s and has been in racing forever.
@WastdTrashPanda2 жыл бұрын
It would be super cool if Dale took an early 90s gen 4 car, put a decklid like this on it, steel shot in the roll bars, nitrous under the seat, and all the other cheated out stuff that his guest have told him. Then give it a cool ass Dirty Mo paint scheme and kinda have it taken around to different racing venues or a museum as somewhat of a history lesson for fans as to how Ingenuity used to be done.
@CR76592 жыл бұрын
Even better would be to take it to a superspeedway and have someone run some hot laps in it and see how much faster it could have been

This was an incredible little segment. “Cheating” stories has been my favorite thing from these podcasts with guys from previous generations, so hearing one from someone who worked on this stuff behind the scenes was amazing. Hopefully we can see more of this in the future

More of this! Love old school cheating stories , because one day in like 15 years we can hear about the stuff going on today
@howabouthetruth21572 жыл бұрын
"The stuff going on today" in NASCAR is boring as all hell...........not to mention the entire nascar cup scene is barely even a shell of it's former self. Sorry, but there will never be the excitement, wonder, intensity, and greatness in today's nascar like there used to be, end of story. I mean for crying out loud, they're all running a generic car set up BY nascar officials nowadays. Not to mention how most of today's punk ass cup car drivers couldn't handle a 500 mile race non-stop. No Sir, today, they get to take breaks a few times throughout each race.........so they can all have ice cream & snow cones.
@mk32492 жыл бұрын
@@howabouthetruth2157 ok fair enough but I was kinda talking about pre Next gen stuff. Like what did hendrick have in their motors last year because the rumor was they were up a lot . Also when MTJ was dominating with Cole Oearn , what kind of stuff was in that car .

@klk19002 жыл бұрын
So I love this guy brought this by! This is one of the top guest in my opinion that’s ever walked in! You just can’t put a price on the cheated up parts. On my stock cars and even legend cars I used a lot of DTMF controlled devices with different radio controlled (by my spotter) he would send tones and open different vents up to change the low pressure region. Also I had 5 fins on the grill to open all of them. (Key radio: Press: 6) to open Individually. Key radio: press: 1-2-3-4-5 or if you only wanted 2 & 4 open which is what we ran 99% of the time. We would key radio: press: 2-4. Those were the good ole days. After the series put onboard cameras I knew I couldn’t be flipping switches so I had to have someone remotely run that stuff.

Bobby Allison to hot in race car, Gary Nelson cuts hole in roof with air chisel during pit stop, suspected. Areo-downforce advantage for Die Guard racing team. This stuff was on live TV during races. ESPN and TNN had far better race and pit road coverage than the networks of today.

I don't know if Dale Jr. would remember this or not, but he was running the 400-miler at Daytona one year; the night race. Jr. had about the strongest car, but at one point in the race, he is jus' ridin' 2nd behind Kyle Busch, making laps. I'm listening to his radio channel on my scanner and Jr. starts to chuckle. He then proceeds to describe--in detail--what he is seeing on the 18 car right ahead of him. The 18's entire decklid is lowering itself, as if being pressed down by the airflow over the car, or by actuators like the ones being described in this video, as the car proceeds down the backstretch, bringing the rear spoiler down out of the air. But, lo and behold, the decklid then raises itself back up, flush with the rear quarter-panels, as the car entered Turn 3. This happened lap after lap, with Jr. absolutely giddy seeing this !!! It must've gone on for about 10-15 laps, and then pitstops began, and that was the last I heard him talk about the decklid during that race. A precious moment that I will never forget !!!

I figured this out once as much as Andy Petree. when I was just 13 years old and loading bagged groceries into a Cadillac Fleetwood at my first job. after bagging all of the goods, I rolled the Buggie to the car and began loading them into the trunk. when all of the sudden, the woman/customer slammed the trunk on both my hands and I began to feel the pinch of steel on fingers,(no anti pinch mechanism back when they were first introduced) I knew right then and there.. Hey I bet this would move a spoiler quite well!!!! Billy Ingle took it a few steps further with Ricky Rudd's team so ---- maybe I should develop that throttle linkage i been thinking about, the kind that lifts the carburetor slightly when you go past 3/8 throttle.. we could even use it at the Martinsville LMSC fall event along with that nice " Illegal aluminum firewall" we placed around the fuel cell. & of course we had to change that panel out to a steel one per the rule book before the start of the qualifying races.. (cuz we got busted with the aluminum but, we already had a replacement prepared) but hey we are NOT smart enough to cheat on purpose right? Phil Warren#47 Mike Buffkin#84 Bubba Adams#9 Billy Smith#89 ... the secret was poly locked carb studs.. just a we bit loose ... and great for when your nice and straight up off the corner across the concreate to asphalt transition - - - - let'er eat.___
