Our footage onboard " Carry on," during Hurricane Nora in the Pacific 2021. We advise of some some basic hints and tips on how to survive and hopefully escape unharmed.
Please remember; ask around for local knowledge including wind patterns, timings and shelter.

In an ideal world I would have all sails packed away and removed from furlers and forestays, (we didn't have time).
Kind regards

Glad you made it safely outside the damage to the bimini at the helm. You were lucky to be behind the wall and facing the worst of the wind. Couldn't help but notice that the cockpit of the Neel 51 felt rather comfortable even in the worst of the storm. Solid boat!

Hard to believe some left their furling head sails up. Absolute no no in Australia. Your boat road it very well.

didn't realize while we were dealing with Hurricane Ida in the gulf and now moving east up through the east coast of the US you all were dealing with Hurricane Nora on the west side of Mexico. Sure, seems like a busy season, and looks like we have three more spots to monitor for the following week over Panama and the Atlantic. Very glad you all fared well and obviously are now Hurricane Boat Prep specialists that we all will be looking to for advice when the next hurricane comes. Although, as you said, most of the time you want to be far, far away, and out of its path. But things happen and decisions need to be made. You all did FANTASTIC in my opinion! Fortunately, your hurricane was a Cat 1 I think and only that blue monohull seemed to take the brunt of the storm in your marina. Although, it looked like it had allot of BEAM against the incoming winds and seemed to not be tied down as well as others. God Bless you all and look forward to more excellent videos to come!

yep sounds about right... wind whistling through rigging... rain pelting down... stay safe Carry On Crew! Great video! We normally removed all sails and canvas during a storm as it does not do to well in any strong wind.. Glad those pylons held good for you guys!

Thanks, yes we didn't have time to drop the foresails this time. One thing I would say, it is irritating that we do not have a winch on the mast to hoist the foresails. We run a block to the winches.

Car tyres though not the most attractive piece of kit to have on board have a multitude of uses. Great on the end of a warp trailed astern if you need extra drag on a monohull, when running under bare poles.

Might have been a good idea to situate yourself right in the middle of the slip. One thing that is really useful is to use the winches (and windlass) to to maneuver in high wind conditions. Easy in a mono hull with strategically placed snatch blocks but probably difficult with The 51's configuration. Knowing how to tie an advanced rolling hitch is also useful for getting lines under strain from cleat to winch and back again. Do you have a nylon rode on the end of your anchor chain? Great hurricane gear. Using the engine is also a real option. In any event glad you are safe and it looks like you were in a very secure place. Having lived in the Bahamas for 60 years I've seen a storm or two. Go North! Central America is a breeding spot for Pacific hurricanes much like West Africa is for the Atlantic. All the best and keep the videos coming.

@@carryonsailing Yes we live and learn. First hurricane? I can't even count. One does learn quickly in these latitudes. Nasty little mother's. Can you imagine what it was like before modern satellite forecasting? Actually I am ashamed to say that I can. In any event I am officially hull #35 due in May. Speaking with the broker weekly. He knows of your channel and have spoken to him about the stainless bow boot (very sexy) and projector plus screen vs TV. I wanted a 150 hp engine but there are no sail drives that size. The compromise is a 110hp V drive with prop shaft. I believe this will become standard or at least a standard option. The 3 boats in front of me are all getting the same engine so hopefully they sort out any teething problems I'm not as young as you and I value real estate in the bedroom! We have lost a closet for a king size Pullman berth. No longer worried about crumpled suits or starched collars! Also took your cue on ramping up all hoses to high pressure. They are pretending not to understand but am happy to meet them half way price wise. It is one of those things we forget about until you look at your old boat and realise you have replaced every single cheap piece of s,,, hose supplied by the manufacturer. So lots going on here but really want you to know how much I value your input and enjoy your adventure, albeit vicariously. I hope we cross paths soon and in the meantime fair winds

Oli, congrats on your purchase. It makes me really happy to know I have helped someone out the way I have helped you. Honestly, I have not even made enough to feed ourselves for a day yet. But that is not what its about. I am very curious how you get on with the V drive. Save yourself a bit of Maintainance and go for the integrel system. 110 hp should be plenty. Smart idea on the bed. You may want to make a window in the wall to see the nav station too. my bow is 5mm INOX steel. Tough to bend correctly. Upgrade the water pump to the same one as me from FEIT italy. Life changing. Water bidet's on the heads avoid toilet paper too.

@@carryonsailing Not sure what the integral system is? I see it mentioned quite often on my quote. On my present boat I have 2 oversized alternators which put out up to 275 amps. More than enough to run AC through inverters whilst under power on windless summer days. Run the generator at anchor. Will be converting from AGMs to Lithium for first time. Will have a 48V battery bank with 4 times the capacity of my current 1,200 amp hour house bank. Have a third party doing the electronics called Julien Pochon of Pochon Pro. Apparently he has done quite a few Neels and I see that he mentions an integral 9kw generator/alternator on the engine. We are AC aficionados so upgraded from 39 to 60,000 BTU. It will be a cold day in hell when I "pop my clogs"! Love the bidet idea. Currently we put toilet paper in plastic sandwich bags. Bidet hose is a much more elegant solution. I have had Spectra water makers for almost 30 years and they have been fantastic. Neel won't change from their brand which is understandable. Then I started thinking of trans Atlantic fuel consumption and making the fuel tank larger and the water tank smaller with two smaller water makers for redundancy. I think I'm driving them a bit crazy. I believe the 47 has the glass partition looking forward to Nav station. It's a really nice feature. Another option is to put a couple of instrument repeaters on the forward bulkhead? That is what I have on my current boat. Really enjoying these little chats but conscious of imposing on your time All the best

The integrel is a super alternator that you no longer need a genset. it works at 48v. sounds like you have it. The dessalator is excellent for desalination. 30 euro water bidet on the toilet seat does the trick. pleasure to help Oliver

Where was your waterproof GoPro? Your footage of the storm was amazing and impressive. Would have been more so with some footage in the wind blast. I have one I bought for $85 off Craig's List and it has been great so far. I am super interested in the Neel 51, but somehow your channel has not captured my attention. (And I am easily amused - I watch more than a 2 dozen sailing channels regularly) I grew up in blighty (Sailed the Solent regularly) and have great affection for the Brits, so it's not that. Your tech talks are interesting, but lots of "ums" and "ahs". I don't mean to be mean - you are living THE LIFE, and I am very envious. I have now subscribed, and will give it a try. Good luck and keep 'em coming!

Another great video James and thanks for sharing your experiences! Glad to hear that you and Eva are safe after that hurricane. Got two questions btw, how do you keep your good shape while sailing and as far as I remember, you had e-bikes, where do you store them?
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Amoo, thanks for the compliment! Actually the ebikes did not live all that long and I would advise against it. Also we had electric scooters which lasted longer but still not that long. We keep fit by using pullies and our own body weight, also using jerry cans full of water. The dog gets us out too. We were thinking to do a video on this.

@@carryonsailing looking forward to "how to stay fit while sailing for dummies" video, hahaha. Sadly my hair balls will not make me fit as your puppy. You walk the dog but cat walks you (if they feel for it)... Thanks for the advice about e-bikes. I actually have a decent fully mountain bike already but a bit of extra "oompf" while trailing/transporting heavy items could be a better idea but looks like I'll save some bucks.

Yes, save your money. I would take a normal bike or an enduro motorbike aournd 250cc if I thought it was not going to be a nightmare with the salt. If I stay a while in a place I will rent or puchase a cheep enduro / scooter.

@@carryonsailingsailing Interesting news on the eBikes. Many channels seem to be using them as well as the scooters. But I always wondered how they did with the SALT air and water; would they last and be a good investment. Seems like a regular bike using old-fashioned leg power works best.

@@carryonsailing Yes, many folks seem to just rent a local mode of transportation if they stay longer. Obviously, if you are provisioning you would need to rent a car or higher a taxi.
