Over the years we have received a lot of requests for a DIY Faraday Cage Kit. In the past we have recommended using our EMP cloth but in most cases this was cost prohibitive and the cloth does not work well when used with a cardboard or wooden box. After some trial and error we have identified some really nice conductive barrier and tape that applies easily to any style box. The conductive barrier is really nice to work with and forms really tight seals against any edge. The conductive tape helps to secure the seals and provide an extra layer of protection at wear points. The cage that we built was 24″x24″x24″ and offered 67dB of shielding at 100mHz. This means that this cage reduced the electric field by 99.9% which provides more than enough protection in the case of an EMP. We are offering this exact kit on Disaster Preparer.com (less the box) OR you can purchase just the material and tape to build your own Faraday Cage kit using your own box of any size. This can be purchased at the following link:

Good day sir! I caught you on the Canadian preparedness Channel just about an hour ago. I'm so glad that I caught that and was able to subscribe to your channel also. I had the same idea that you just showed tonight but you filled in the blanks for me thank you so much. I will be building a box such as that. But I also want to build one to cover my generator but I also want to be able to get into my generator Without Really tearing things apart. So I was wondering if I could use small rabbit wire or even metal screen wire to wrap my box in? Mainly using the wire to be able to open it up to Crank It Up should I need to in case of a regular power outage. Wouldn't that be the same as wrapping it in the conductive material that you have wrapped the Box in and if I am able to use the wire should I use it as plan naked wire or can it be rubberized wire? I certainly hope you can answer these questions for me. Also have one more question. I am just before getting an EMP Shield for my home and if my generator is connected and to my house grid will it be safe. I'm sorry these are difficult questions but that's the questions I have. I certainly do hope you get to answer these questions for me. I wrote down the website you put on the screen for the kit and plan on getting the kit. Please have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry! This is in response to the alert box that you demonstrated the other day. I tried to purchase one or get in line for one and somehow someway I ended up with two in my cart. I tried to delete one but it would not work and I still would like to purchase that product. I hope you read this

Thank you so much for taking your valuable time with this project! I have a question though concerning the construction of the box. Assuming that conductive tape is more expensive than say duct tape or gorilla tape, would it not be more reasonable to use less expensive options on the areas where the conductive sheeting is being attached to the plywood? My assumption being that the other attaching panels would either not be touching those areas or that the conductive sheeting would be overlapping them reaching other conductive material (where you would use conductive tape). Am I being clear about this? It’s a bit hard to get across but perhaps you understand.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper Жыл бұрын
You certainly can do this. In truth, I suspect even if you used Gorilla tape on the entire box, it would still work almost equally as well. The metal to metal of the overlapping conductive cloth would probably be enough to seal it up.

Nice video, What did you use as shielding material? How much does it cost? However, Military EMP Bombs create magnetic fields on the order of hundreds of millions of Gauss or more. The EMP wave is a pulse with near DC characteristics and very little high frequency components. Its been a while for me, but in the 80's working with the Air Force and General Dynamics on EMP detection and protection, the only way to generate such an EMP is from a Nuclear Detonation. We had to scale up our experiments in the lab to determine a real tactical EMP event (still classified). As a rough matter of scale using 0 dBm as 1 mW/50 Ohms. In your low power experiment you excite with 100 MHz at -7 dBm (200 uW) at a range of about 100 mm, and read -73 dBm (about .05 nW) which is 66 dB attenuation inside. But in reality, a real DC EMP event will generate (what I can only say): a big enough pulse to get through in your case at about +40 dBm or more (10 W), that is enough to destroy the electronics inside.

Great video. So... my question... If the solar power station and the panels that go with it, are stored the the cardboard boxes that they shipped in.... can I just use this method to completely seal the boxes with this material and tape? Rather than building a box like this? My other thought was an EMP blanket big enough to just cover them up.
@disasterprepper

Yes, you can simply use this material (or even aluminum foil) to wrap the cardboard boxes that the panels came in. It works just as well as having a wood box.

I made a box like this one except I connected each corner with 2 cabinet hinges both 3 inch. I can just pull the pins and each section fits together perfectly for pins to be replaced. Tape and foil is standard. The question is if boxes and other types of containers are then wrapped with chicken wire type materials can more protection be achieved. I was also wondering why you didn't line the inside with cardboard so that no possibility of contact with the outer surface can be made
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 2 жыл бұрын
The inside of the box is wood, so there's no real risk of contact with something metal. As for chicken wire, it doesn't shield high frequencies very well. I showed that in a different video.

How would flowing electricity inside of a Faraday cage effect it's protection? For example, say I hook up a cellphone to an external battery pack and set it in a Faraday cage box to charge (I understand that could become a fire hazard, but I am using this theory for the sake of example). Would the flowing electricity within the box increase the risk of a shock getting through the barrier(s) at all? Also, would the hinges cause any risk of conduction or jumping to something that sits too close to the corner? Thank you!

If it's electrostatic current you are worried about, it would be highly recommended to ground your box. However in a more recent test Dr. B has done, grounding your faraday cage had virtually no impact on EMP protection.

It will work, but won't be as sturdy as wood boxes. I have a slightly different method I do. PLEASE READ ALL DIRECTIONS FIRST!!! 1) Keep electronic in box it came in 2) Wrap box light Christmas gift with 5 complete layers of Aluminum foil. 3) Place box into a EMP bag and heat seal bag with curling iron (wife's) 4) Place item into BIG metal garbage can that I made into a faraday cage with cardboard lining the inside of can and a VERY LARGE EMP bag inserted like garbage bad into can 5) place all items and fill large garbage can with all electric gear in smaller emp bags . And heat seal bag Place lid on can and use metal tape to seal can around edges . Write list of what's inside can and tape to outside of can. How to turn a metal garbage can into a fer😅aday cage. 1) Use Metal Duct tape and seal any and all holes in can like Rivits, Handles, and Seam along side on inside and outside. 2) Line can with Cardboard just below the lib. Make sure lib can close tightly. 3) Insert Very Large EMP bag into can like trash bag. Note: Some of the steps are repeated in both descriptions. Make faraday cage first, then proceed to how to seal items up...

Hello, quick questions: 1. Does the foil need to be exposed or can it be protected on the exterior by a layer of cardboard duct-taped over it? 2. Everything inside the cage needs to be separated from the foil and tape, since contacting the conductive layers would defeat the purpose, correct? If so, would several layers of plastic prevent conduction? 3. Should a ground wire run from the cage to an electrical outlet, using the ground socket hole?

Building ground is connected to the grid in some cases. 200K volts can jump from the hot line to the ground easily. Remember, most if not all grounds have greater than 0 ohms resistance. Plastic generally is an insulator hence the use of plastic in power tools and such. Silicone may be a better insulator (think car ignition wires type silicone).

Small holes wouldn't affect shielding that much, but if you ran a power cord out, that could really compromise the protection. You could perhaps put a good ferrite outside on the wire, but you'd still be giving up some protection. Also, you'd really need to be careful about having enough venting not to cause a fire hazard or premature hardware failure.

What type of material or fabric do you recommend for absolute privacy and security for a smaller box or wallet size bag for phone, sd cards etc.? Thanks!

Most good RF phone pouches will work fine. The provide around 80-10 dB of shielding, which is plenty.

Excellent video, as always. I have a question about a large storage box that I am currently using. I have a large, rectangle truck bed box that I am storing my solar panels in, and is made of a heavy plastic material. It is about 5' L x 3' W x 2.5' H. So, the material is not conductive, but I have to cover the exterior with a conductive material to prevent rf intrusion. Besides the material you are using here in this video, can you please recommend an alternative material that I can use that will protect the panels inside, that is cheaper. I'm currently living on a limited income ( ... the result of being downsized) and I can't afford the material you're using, as I require a substantial amount of material. It's been suggested that I use two or three layers of aluminum foil, but I'm concerned about the fragility, as the container is very heavy, and I don't want to inadvertently tear an opening in the foil when moving the container. Also, I have an old style four drawer steel file container that I would like to use for storing additional electronic items ( I'm a ham, and have several different pieces of equipment I'd like to keep safe). Can I line the interior of the steel file container with either spray on truck bed liner, spray on undercarriage rubber coating, or thick pieces of cardboard taped together with gorilla tape, to act as an efficient rf barrier - or possibly incorporate all three products in layers, inside the file cabinet? Time consuming, but I seem to have a lot of time now to take on these necessary precautions to keep my equipment safe from an EMP or CME. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

space blankets, they're cheap. I just ordered a dozen for $14 on amazon. They may be a little thin but I ordered them for reflective properties in a sunroom, will see how thick the ones I ordered are for Faraday application. I like the idea of the flex spray for the interior! :)

@@Lewisusa11 Looks like good old aluminum foil does a much better job. Yeah, one layer on the outside and I would do a layer around each inside too. That's my plan anyhoo. Make sure to get that conductive tape to seal the edges.

@@atomicfrijole7542 I was planning on using spray flex seal on the inside to prevent having to insulate the interior items from an inner layer of foil. I like the idea of the small metal garbage cans too. Spray flex a few coats of black on the inside (I guess color doesn't matter) and then store your items inside. From what I have seen any metal container should do, as long as it can be sealed well and your stuff inside is insulated from the walls. I guess I will use the space blankets ( I got a pack of 12 on Amazon) for reflection in my sunroom. I am also looking at some of the small Rigid metal job boxes. The lid has a nice gasket seal and should be somewhat easy to wrap with heavy-duty aluminum foil. It has 2 cutouts for padlocks on each side, which I think could be cut off with a grinder on the inside and weld plates over them to eliminate EMF leakage. I would also spray the inside with a few coats of the spray flex. I am also wondering if you could use the spray galvanized paint?

I think a Faraday cage like this would provide adequate protection against a NEMP, even a very large one. Very sensitive electronics might also require placing them in EMP bags for double layer protection.

Conspicuously omitted is, of course, is the name of the "nice conductive material", "barrier", "high quality material". Is it merely a thick aluminum foil? My guess is that if you wanted us to know, that would have been the first thing you would have mentioned. So, are you planning on selling it and the tape on your website at astronomically high prices??? Thanks, but I built one myself and pray that both mine, yours, and everyone else who has or will ever build one, won't be needing it and that, if we do, they all work perfectly. Thanks, EMPDoctor, and while I do appreciate your videos, most of us can not afford your prices. Still, you have given me ideas that seem like they will work in case of a coronal mass ejection, if not a massive HEMP strike above Kansas.

No, it's not aluminum foil. It's more more like a radiant barrier except without the small holes that are often in that material. You can build a similar product using foil though. It just won't be as durable, less expensive though. Other shielding options exist too, of course.

I just went looking through the comments for exactly this reason. I appreciate the content this person is putting out, but honestly it seems a bit sketchy how secretive he's being. It doesn't say what it is in his website either. I'm not in the US, so I don't want to order from there (if I even can - there's no mention of international shipping). It would be great to know what this wonder material is...

@@disasterprepper I'm getting some GIRON magnetic shielding to help out off amazon which is kind of expensive but might work. The plan to turn off all signals is: wear wet clothes get in the back of my truck bed with a plastic tent and a sump pump showering a solid flow water fall all around me without getting water on me, then I'm going to get into my rf shielding mesh grounded bag, then have another bag I get in that is the magnetic shielding, then I'll put magnets on my ears. This should turn off all technology signals but the only remainder is sound signals so after I build all of that I'll definitely have to build a sound neutralizing system.

Saving electronics is great and I do, but-many items will not be saved. In that case unless the power source is disconnected many items will be on fire in a powerful EMP. I would suggest having a plan to deal with those items and where they are located. I have several large metal garbage cans with lids to put small items in that my be smoking or on fire and several fire extinguishers.

The one suggestion is place Rubber old Tires or Rubber mat on Bottom. This will ressistance Electrical Power or Surge. Defetes need for Faraday Box. Plus Surge Protector inside also. Extra Protection. Great Size for those with Cpack and EcoFlo smaller Generator also store portable Solar roll -up Panels.

Hmmm, What you are using looks like MuMetal, but may look like aluminum foil to casual observers. You should warn your audience NOT to use aluminum foil to block the Magnetic Field from an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) event, it will only block the Electric Field, a Magnetic Field will pass right through and induce destructive currents in the electronic devices inside. In electronics engineering, magnetic shields are made of MuMetals or Steel to shunt the magnetic fields around something. These are often used around inductive devices like transformers to reduce induced hum in surrounding equipment. To the Audience: Try this: Hold a piece of steel one inch behind a sheet of aluminum and place a strong magnet against the aluminum on the other side and watch the steel be attracted strongly to the magnet though the aluminum. Try the same with a steel plate in place of the aluminum and place the magnet right up against the steel plate. The steel about an inch away on the other side of the plate will not be drawn to the magnet nearly as much. This is why an inch or more of insulation (like cardboard or wood) must be inside to keep the electronic devices away from the steel sides. Using aluminum may work for low EMP pulses, but the "HUGE" EMP pulses created by a special nuclear detonations will not hold up. Remember, EMP bombs are effective from thousands of miles away. You may not hear or feel the event, but if not properly protected, your devices will suddenly stop working (permanently). Look at a Radio Faraday Room you will find in many Radio Frequency (RF) laboratories... they are always made of Steel and the really expensive ones are made of MuMetal. These rooms usually have a fine Steel or Copper Mesh window for breathing air. But a fully closed Faraday Box will offer greater protection from an EMP event. Nothing is absolute, but aluminum is not the way to go for massive EMP events.
