Discing helps break down the larger clods of dirt created by chisel plowing. You can also use a disc to knock down corn stalks. In this video, we bring back out our new John Deere 4640 and our 630 disc. Enjoy!

Ryan, pulling a disc was always my favorite thing to do. It changed the way the ground looked, was pretty fast and had to be done. Thanks for posting!

We bought a brand new 4640 in 1980. It had quad range. We used it about 10 years. Never had a problem with it. Definitely one of the best tractors ever made. Also around that time we sold our 7520 and bought an 8640 and what a beast that was. I miss those days farming with my dad.

Hi HFW, Love the way you present everything thank you. With regard to the extra weight on the discs I was wondering whether you could make a steel box to fit flat on the back in the part that doesn’t fold, and use one or more front Tractor weight to allow you to use the full width of discs and so save a pass on the tractor? I am thinking the extra weight would push all the discs down equally?

I watch all you videos and enjoy them, you had one on the 630 Disc, how wide is yours? What it spacing ? I’m looking at an 18’ 630 with 7.5” spacing and trying to figure out how much Pto or drawbar HP is needed Thank you

Do you grow different crops in the same fields? Notice that your corn from the year prior was just around the field!!! When you have lots of land, this could be an option!! Thanks 4 Sharing!!

I love the older model John Deere tractors, they are built tougher, last longer, and are a lot simpler to use( technology wise ), I'm subscribed to a farmer that recently rebuilt his 4960 John Deere tractor from the ground up after it caught on fire a couple of years ago, but I never realized how freaking expensive parts for John Deere tractors are, sometimes I wonder if your paying for the brand.

Hmmm... I was told years ago that you don't ever want to run those folding disks with the wings up-- it'll tear up the center section. Course that may be on older, lighter built folding disks-- that Deere disk looks pretty tough and seemed to handle it just fine! Yall don't use a crumbler or "rolling basket"?? I run one behind the 23 foot disk on my BIL's farm in northern Indiana and it does a GREAT job at finishing the field and firming it up slightly for planting... crushes all the clods and breaks them up and breaks up the rootballs and stuff and kinda puts the fluffy loose soil and residue on top, while firming the ground up a little underneath so the planter doesn't run so deep into the ground... Works great! OL J R :)

What's the difference between discing and plowing, besides the obvious. Is it just a preferance thing or are there different functionalities to the two?
@HowFarmsWork
@HowFarmsWork 8 жыл бұрын
+Mason Jenkins Discing makes the ground soft like a pillow and only mixes the top few inches. Plowing gets deeper and is to break up compaction.

here in denmark where i live discing is not verry common ( i have never seen one in action ) but i would say that 70% of the farmers plow about every other year at least where i live ps your videos are verry addicting keep up the good work :)

ikr thats a nice tractor! but... are 4430 with a 6 shovel plow went in mudy water chizel plowed all way down an the 4430 does not have a pally brake or the lever and you need more traction? 4640 are bigger than 4430's i don't care thats a very nice tractor sounds great how low are you going with the disk?
@JohnSmith-fs4dx
@JohnSmith-fs4dx 10 ай бұрын
Seems like you mainly chisel plow now though? Is there a reason you chisel plow instead of disc? Beginner asking.
@HowFarmsWork
@HowFarmsWork 10 ай бұрын
The Disc would traditionally follow the chisel plow. We now use the VT for any passes that we don't hit with the chisel plow. Either way the chiseled ground gets worked down.

Did the 4440 pull the disk good . Our 4440 struggles with the 18 foot disk
@TheRestOfTheStory
@TheRestOfTheStory 9 жыл бұрын
This disk behind the 4440 would actually lift the front tires off the ground, even with the 4640 it was a bit of a pull. This disk is the big reason why we got that 8R last fall.
