Me after playing Disco Elysium: Evrart is evil. Me after playing Disco Elysium twice: Joyce was playing you like a fiddle, and is evil. Me after watching this video: literally no characters are evil, even the evil ones. WTF. I really loved this, thanks.

By the way - massive kudos for doing proper subtitles for such a long video. Way too many channels farm it out to underpaid gig-work places that have a ton of basic errors, if they even bother at all. I know it's a lot of work so rest assured it doesn't go unappreciated!

Honestly? It's not that much work. YT can auto-time it if I put in the whole script as a .txt file. Sometimes the words don't match because I changed my mind mid-recording and forget to fix it, but any channel doing pre-recorded content has little excuse.

Diving into what the pale truly is, is a fascinating part of the game. I always thought it was a representation of all of the information humans have ever forgotten, congealing into a pseudo physical form. That’s the reason that humans seem to be a source, and the reason it’s expansion. Weirdly enough, though, while it did strike me as unique and interesting and existential in my first play through, I regarded it in the same way one regards the fact that the Earth will get swallowed by the sun in several hundred million years. The world is always sort of ending, so it never bothered me much.
@GustavoIto
@GustavoIto 7 ай бұрын
Part of the fun is not knowing exactly how the pale is. Most importantly, consider where each explanation come from is a great insight the video brings, with the moralinterns using the fear of the pale as fear of changing the status quo
@localsnek
@localsnek 7 ай бұрын
Personally, when I encountered the Pale, I immediately connected it to existential terror. In my eyes, it’s the looming feeling of everything being for nothing, no matter what you do. It’s something you either distract yourself from, or learn to process in a healthier way. Everyone on Earth asks whether their life will have meaning if everything is for nothing, and everyone in Elysium asks whether their life will have meaning if the Pale swallows everything.
@lexxiloveless7163
@lexxiloveless7163 7 ай бұрын
to me the pale was anxieties about the forgotten past and the unknown expanse of the future, it seems to be something that affects everyone but talk of the pale seems moreso in transient areas like revechol because of their place in limbo. it could be an expanse of secrets and wonder or it could be just nothingness. some people want to explore/cross it and others wonder if it will swallow everything into nothingness.

To me Pale is in a way The End of all things. And I feel like it creates a funny commentary that people still decide to squabble among each other about politics when the world around them is ending.
@Ixarus6713
@Ixarus6713 27 күн бұрын
To me, the Pale seemed to be a cosmic destruction of anything which exists, seeking to eliminate anything not just passively living. This explains why Harry is the best offence against it according to Shivers, he is 100% pure, concentrated personality, emotion and politics. He's the "everything" to fight the Pale's "nothingness". He's the most "living" person to exist, to the po8nt that he's almost entirely in the present, apart from his existential dread and trauma from Dora.

YO FINALLY someone else who thinks harry is an innocence!! i was replaying disco elysium earlier this year and came up with the same theory, it makes so much sense
@GustavoIto
@GustavoIto 7 ай бұрын
I do think of Harry as some kind of "anti-innocence": instead of willing material change that advances existence, he willed non-existence, and got hit by similar forces. That drew attention of the spirit of Revachol and gave "life" to the voices in his head
@PotionSmeller

I choose to believe that Harry has the potential to be an Innocence, and that he can exert enough change on the world to prevent the events in the book. The latter part is mostly cope though.

Year ago, after finishing my fifth playthrough, i would sit there in front of my tv digesting all the dialogs all the tidbits i would find in the internet about pale, the end, "girl child revolution" geting closer to the conclusion only to fail miserably time and time again, losing hope for any closure due to a lack of video's and essays online which would go deep and around covering all subjects in detail including the ones in a book! And suddenly, 5 years after release this video shows up in my recommendations. I watched it in one breath, its such a relief and at the time i am writing this it seems that all my questions were answered. I guess all i am trying to say is thank you.

Your analogy of Dros murdering Lely to punish Klaasje to the Moralintern destroying the Commune to punish La Revacholiere to deconstruct his bullshit "The bourgeois are not human" monologue was beautiful It's worth noting that in both cases, the "Killer" used a weapon of comparatively overwhelming power from incredible distance to do the deed, an attack neither victims could have seen coming, let alone do anything to stop or defend against. With Dros, it was his breech-loading high-caliber sniper rifle; and with the Moralintern, it was the massive army of the Coalition, but especially their airships.

This was a great video! On a side note. Living in a post-soviet country, it's insane how many Iosef Lilianovich Droses are there. The sense of failure is so strong, people forget that we have it somewhat good. They may not live on an island but they are so deep in the nostalgia the real world feels like a one.

Almost everything said is something I know and compared to other KZfaqrs there is enough care to be as accurate as possible with all the knowledge in the game. I’ve had to stop other videos about disco elysium because they’re either surface level, missing out on some important concepts, or they just don’t love the game as much as we do. Thank you for this video. Despite the fact that I liked the creation of ZA/UM (at least the ZA/UM that created Disco Elysium) and I understood that it was deeper than it is, although I could not fully realize and express it, and despite the fact that I went through it and returned several times, I cannot say that I have progressed to the neighboring shore after several attempts to complete the game again. But your video has revealed more deeply my understanding of the events taking place in the world of the game. But more importantly, you made me think about myself more than once (not a bad start to the year) During these almost three hours, I almost cried several times and several times found myself just staring at the monitor, no longer hearing anything, completely immersed in myself. You rekindled the idea in me to start writing something. The idea that flares up and goes out several times a day and who knows, maybe it will fade out again by the time I finish this comment. And despite the fact that several of your phrases expressed and reflected more meaning in me than I will ever be able to write in my pathetic attempts to express at least some kind of holistic thought (as I am doing now) But I will try. Not only because the very idea of expressing at least a little of my thoughts through text, in order to let them be read and give, if not temporary confidence in a better future, then at least a smile, at the same time scares me with the thought that I will not be able to express it, but excites me so much that I cannot sleep. Maybe it's because for today's me in my early twenties, the idea of creating at least something distracts me enough not to pay attention to how empty and repetitive my life is, but it doesn't distract enough to finally start doing at least something. But I'm going to try, because what can we do but try? Thanks a lot again. Disco Elysium

This is a beautiful analysis touching on points that i've (in my three playthrough's of the game) NEVER saw or even knew about. Im lacking knowlege on Poland outside of the more known history of it so i would love to see in your part 2 with discussing the similarities!

Wow this was GOOD. As someone who played since the first few months the game launched, has bought the vinyl soundtrack twice and even bough Kim’s jacket: This is the best video essay about DE I’ve ever seen. Extremely eloquent, well thought out and well written. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of depth in analysis of each section. Chef’s kiss. You’ve earned a sub, wishing you success with future projects, you’ve got things to say :)

Finally got around to watching this and these three hours were definitely well spent!! Very impressed with how you managed to cover that many topics without getting too caught up on insignificant details or losing the overall arc of your narrative. Certainly my favourite essay on Disco Elysium right now and makes me want to read Sacred and Terrible Air soon. Great job!

Beautiful essay! Watched it in one breath. Genuinely impressed by how fresh your analysis of one of my favourite games feels after countless "essays" talking about same mundane things about DE over and over and you going into more philosophical dimension. I really enjoyed your "story beat from character to character" progression, and your thoughts about the God, the Pale and the Air felt like you put in words what I personally couldn't connect because I couldn't find the glue to put between the pieces myself. Thank you for your work, Happy New years, and greetings from Ukraine

this video essay is beautiful. you are fantastically articulate, your script was touching, moving, and exceptionally humane to the nuanced, flawed and compelling bunch of characters in this utter masterpiece of a game. the way you concluded your analysis threatened to bring tears to my eyes. this is, without a doubt in my mind, the most HARDCORE analysis of Disco Elysium, and you bet i’m going to share this video til my dying breath

In my opinion, especially from the narrative perspective, this game is as excellent as Planescape Torment. This is the highest praise in my book. It is for sure more of a "spiritual successor" of PT than Torment: Tides of Numenera... Disco Elysium is a peak of visual interactive novel attempt to gameplay. I loved every second of this game.

ideas permeating the air, the pale, the phasmid changing the air, revachol/shivers communicating to harry thru wind (thus the air) - this thread of imagery in Disco Elysium somehow completely escaped my notice and it changes how I look at a lot of things!! Its an insanely beautiful and interesting way at looking at it, thank you for pointing it out. Awesome video
