Do you want to replace honeysuckle with something native, shade loving, and edible? The Spicebush (Linderia benzoin) is an excellent replacement plant for honeysuckle in wooded yards. It works well in numerous other situations as well: as an ornamental plant, in naturalized woodlands, and in landscaping.
Its edible properties are a bonus: you can eat the berries fresh, dehydrate them and make a spice, and you can make tea out of the leaves and twigs.
In this video, I describe the spicebush, show several specimens, and discuss its uses and habitat.
