Discourse Analysis Part 2: Foucauldian Approaches

From a lecture given in 2015 by Graham R Gibbs at the University of Huddersfield.
This second session examines the ideas behind a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis and draws also on some ideas from Critical Discourse Analysis. The distinctive contributions of Michel Foucault's approach are discussed before some of the key ways of carrying out a Foucauldian analysis are examined. The session ends with a brief discussion of some of the criticisms of both Foucauldian and Psychological discourse analysis.

I'm so grateful that I've found this fantastic lecture. Thank you so much. I've taken a lot out of this in preparing for my phd 1st year review. I'm using Foucault's theories about power, discourse, and knowledge to explore the concept of compassion in the NHS. Fascinating work, especially using Foucault's oeuvre. Gibbs' rendition of Foucauldian discourse analysis compensates for the utter lack of relatability and concision in the original author's treatises on the subject. Along with Gibbs' lecture on discursive psychology, this is a must-watch for anyone struggling to navigate a realm of thought that might otherwise remain hopelessly inaccessible.

Dr. Graham Gibbs, These are great videos you are making and taking from your time to do them for free is a generous thing of you. I learned a lot from all the case study videos you made as I'm now working now on my case study research that is actually semi-structure interviews. I've only little question, do you think when writing my paper the " Finding " section can be discussed in the discussion section or do I have to the finding in a separate section of its own as I see some literature some papers they put it inside the discussion and some put it outside. What is your recommendation or view about this? Thanks

Dear Graham, I was wondering wether you think it possible to use a Foucauldian DA approach to analyze a large amount of Facebook comments (800) on a Facebook post to see how identified discourses shape and form a person's or organization's brand? Sincerely, S.

One of my PhD students has done something very similar. He used Foucauldian DA to analyse photos from websites (actually about food banks). He too had several hundred images, but he use a coding process to classify the images (by topic and by discursive act) in order to pre-process the data and make it more manageable. You might think about doing the same for the comments you are analysing. The key is to identify the discursive acts or concepts that the comments represent.

But, is this a correct interpretation of Foucault's work? Derek hook (2001) in "Discourse, knowledge, materiality, history; Foucault and discourse analysis" doesn't think so: "Discourse analysis has come to represent something of a ‘growth industry’ in both research and critical psychology. Despite the apparent indebtedness of many such methods of discourse analysis to Foucault, there exists no strictly Foucauldian method of analysing discourse." Could it be that Parker (1992) has (mis)appropriated the Foucauldian understanding of discourse by going into the meaning of the sign and the psychology of the subject instead of sticking to the level of the statement? Foucault's Achaeology of Knowledge seeks to describe discourses in the conditions of their emergence and transformation rather than in their deeper, hidden meaning, their propositional or logical content, or their expression of an individual or collective psychology. Archeological analysis studies discourse only at its level of positive existence, and never takes discourse to be a trace or record of something outside of itself.

Of course, there are many different interpretations of Foucault and Hook's is one of them. Your 'growth industry' point is one that Hook himself makes in his article. In this video I was more concerned to show what was distinctly different from discursive psychology in Foucault's approach. I certainly want to avoid claiming that I have offered a definitive and 'correct' account of Foucault's work, although what I have said is a fairly common interpretation.
