Painting is my favorite part of the whole experience. The game is just an excuse to buy more fun models to paint. My minis are pretty amateur hour, but I find it relaxing. We have very different experiences

Personal favorite hobby anecdote is about applying for my current job (which I love). I work in a residential program for teens and my interviewer/would-be supervisor mentioned they have to get creative with things to entertain them sometimes, mentioning they bring in tabletop games for them to try. I put myself out there and started talking with them about my own wargame interests and we spent the next 15 minutes just shooting the shit about our favorite games. Never be ashamed of your hobby!

Some really good advice there. I’d certainly advise newcomers to start with One page rules even if they eventually want to play Warhammer, ideally the skirmish games “Grimdark Future Firefight” and “Age of Fantasy”. Also you don’t have to paint eyes, edge highlight or drill your barrels NONE OF THESE ARE COMPULSORY! ALSO MOST IMPORTANTLY MAKE SURE NONE OF YOUR HOME’S ROOMS HAVE GREY CARPETS!

Solid list. I'll add another point: get proper tool for the modelling part of the hobby. Good quality plastic clippers, files and a good blade will get you going a lot easier than using what you can scrounge around in the house. Lesson learned as a teen in the late '80s.

#6 is a really cool thing. I've been in the hobby since 2020 (gee time does fly, 2020 seemed like yesterday) and only in this year I've been more open about my hobby, even posting on my personal Instagram account for a few months now, and let me tell ya, people are either amazed by the minis and are like: "OMG did you paint that BY HAND?" or just don't care at all and say "oh that's cool"

Yep. Most people don't have a creative hobby. Mostly they have passive hobbies like TV or books or at best video games with some creative content like Minecraft. And to them, even a beginner's paint job is impressive.

Really great tips one and all! I gotta admit I'm one of those guys that paints as I buy for the most part, I guess I'm just too broke to aquire a pile of shame. I really appreciate the tips you gave on things like finding a gaming group and not overstressing over learning the game perfectly before trying it. I have made excuses about this time and time again because I am self conscious about not being able to memorize rules that well for some reason. I wish I had friends that were Into the hobby as I tend to learn by doing. For AOS I have been looking up the little exercises they provide in the extremis booklet to teach new players ( though sadly it wasn't also Included in the dominion box which is the one I had got, so I'm trying to find a site with these exercises printed out).

Great run down! Revell plastic cement is amazing, it bonds quickly and is so safe I can even let my five yr old use it without worrying about sticking themselves to the mini. I would add a good pair of flush-cutting plastic clippers, a mould line scraper and a fine scalpel are tools worth grabbing. All model shops carry them and they will last a life time if looked after :)

Here's my recommendation for anyone who wants try a game commanding an ARMY of little tiny soldiers: The venerable De Bellis Antiquitatis, or DBA as it's called by the community. Originally published in 1990, it was and still is a groundbreaking set which did away with most of the heavy and clunky rules conventions of the 1980s historical sets, replacing them with a simple system that still holds up today. It is very easy to pick up since each army is made up of 12 stands with two to four minis on them, representing different troop types such as skirmishers, knights, pikes, bowmen and various other warriors. There are no points systems involved, and not all armies are equally strong, but most can do well, especially if terrain is used properly with lighter equipped forces. This means that you don't have to paint ranks upon ranks of troops to get a force that represents a typical army from history, such as Romans, Gauls, medieval knights or even the rumbling chariots of ancient Egypt! A single game can be played in a very short time, from 30 minutes up. The rules are easy to learn but hard to master, with lots of tactical depth. Since single games are so quick to play, use can use the super simple campaign system in the book to play campaigns with up to six people over a single day. DBA has been around for over 30 years now and many historical miniature manufacturers sell army packs corresponding to the DBA lists for a decent price, meaning getting into it is super easy. Here's the link the game's Wikipedia page, which includes links to the best fan and resource pages. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Bellis_Antiquitatis In short, if you want to play a tactical, quick game that looks like it's a Boomer wargame but doesn't play like one, give this a gander!

As a guard player, I had fun just seeing how long I could last. I remember once telling this to another 40K guy in the local FLGS and being told, "so, you don't care about the game?" Like somehow my playing for fun and recognizing that my mostly infantry IG army wasn't the most competitive army was an insult to 40K or something. All I could manage was an eye roll in response. Of course this is the same guy who was so hot to win that he would hire people to pro-paint his armies and accept awards for painted army.

surprised when talking about glues "sprue glue" wasnt mentioned. i have 2 GW boxes sitting behind me right now and they havent been touched cause im painting D&D minis and set pieces for my partners game. hes the forever DM/GM. the "paintRack" phone app on android is really handy for color comparisons amongst all the brands out there (specially if you want a GW color but dont want to give them your money). partworks like done from hachette is an expensive way to collect an army but the bonuses of getting paints and paint brushes make them handy. dont stick to just one paint brand cause there are many out there and dont scoff at companies like vallejo or AK interactive cause you can get more texture paint from their scenics ranges then buying a 24mg pot from GW (you get about 8 GW pots for one vallejo/AK interactive) *squeeling noises cause AK are doing weird colored texture paints right now under the banner "war gamer"* SENPAI FINALLY NOTICED UUUUUUUUUUUS!!!

My honest advice here is if you like to paint models but don't have a ton of money, offer to do commission painting. You can offer quite a bit less than some of these big commission painters and if you work out decent parameters for the commission with the person you are doing it for there may be no rush and you could make some money to spend on more paints, models, or even an airbrush. the big thing here is start small my first commission was 2k points of salamanders and it was a tall order, but it was super satisfying playing against the army and knowing I improved, had a lot of fun, and made some money to boot.

#29 is certainly true. I know a bunch of people who would be willing to try out a game, but wouldn't ever "get into" it themself. They like to play, but don't care about the building and painting parts of the hobby and ultimately aren't interested enough in these games to actually invest money into it. So with my absolute inability to resist the shiny and new I'm the one to supply the next boardgame or the next army/gang/warband for a minis game ;) (though I'm getting better at it, my collection has become big enough to be a constant reminder that I don't have to buy new stuff all the time - there is a lot of older titles we haven't touched in a while :D ) Recently finished painting the starter gangs in the 2 player Carnevale box, I've ordered a couple more models for each side, to be able to get a bit more army building going, and to pad out those 150 point scenarios. Though I've also succumbed to wanting more as well, ordering a box and some models of a 3rd faction (Patrician). But I will do my best to stay strong and resist further purchases until all new things are assembled, painted up and will have seen at least some play...

"bundles are not your friend". God, this. So this. Yesterday, I was looking at a bundle I bought a year ago and wallowing in some buyer's remorse. I'd forgotten a very important rule: "A deal is only a good deal if you can BOTH afford it AND you were going to buy it any way.". Most of the items in that bundle were not items I was planning on getting. It was a fantastic discount, but it was not a good deal.

I read about someones spouse that didn't read everything when buying a bundle. It was a bit pricy, but she spent about $500 in historicals. Which meant about 1500 miniatures, because historical are cheap. Very happy husband, but somewhat overwhelmed.
@iammattc1
@iammattc1 2 жыл бұрын
You kinda mentioned it: paint the cheap stuff first. For example: don't paint Mortarion as your first Death Guard mini, paint a bunch of Death Guard marines first. Work out what colour scheme you like, practice your techniques, get a result you're happy with, then move onto a character, see about putting in additional time and effort THEN MAYBE consider painting a single figure that costs £95

I have really started to enjoy painting more now that I am using Speed Paints for a lot of the rank and file, then taking a bit more time with main characters. The feeling of a decently painted miniature seen from 3ft away feels pretty good. Unrelated, but I forgot until recently how good picking up a metal miniature feels. I recently received an Infinity model to paint and after a decade (maybe more) of plastic, wow it felt good to hold something with some weight to it.

been almost 10 years into the hobby, i'm "officially" the miniature painter in my club, and my tip for begginers is: start with metal or pewter miniatures, if you don't know how to paint, start out with metal miniatures, simply because you can use even thinner to remove the paint of a failed painting session. in other cases, IPA alcohol and probably alcohol as a fuel can be used to remove paint from miniatures as well, and it doesn't damage the mini.

Kinda disagee on that one. Metal is horor to paint and basecoat for absolute beginners and dropping them usually chips the paint ruining your work. I hate gw as much as anyone else but their newer sculpts and push fit plastic models are pretty much the easyest minis to paint. The plastic is really forgiving and has almost no mould lines, the push fit allows to reach hard spots and dropping the model usually causes no damage. Also you get them really cheap on ebay as the unpopular half of their 2 player starter box sells for around 30-40 quid for a 1000p army

@@KT-pv3kl the paint removal. for me i prefer to work with metal models. i kinda got used to it, (also because here there is a very cheap primer to use either on brush or airbrush and he is very good to use in metal)

Tis a good list! I agree on your point x, where other people compliment your amateure paintshop. I have had this happen so often. Remember, only you know people can paint the Mona Lisa on an Imperial Knights shoulder pad, and you will NEVER see it on the table because it is the Mona Lisa, condemned to stay in a case forever.

That bit about not going into bundles just for value is very true. Whether or not you're spending less than you would on the items separately, you're still buying more than you normally would. This can be bad, not just because it gives you more work to chip away at, but also because you might be convinced to buy models you don't actually want just for the sake of savings. I need to stress this: if you don't want the model, it is _dead weight_ for you, in terms of money spent. You may end up canceling out any savings you get, just from the fact you don't want the miniature. There are ways, of course, to recoup "losses" from a bundle like this. Plenty of people will resell such models. There is no shortage of Necron models, new on sprue or only assembled, on a secondary market, from people selling off the Necron half of their Indomitus boxes or the various bundles made from it. (Although this is one of those instances where buying the bundle is the objectively correct decision: the Necron Warriors kit sells from GW for $50, which is the same price as the Recruit Edition bundle that contains the Necron Warriors kit and several other models. Due to GW's blind price increases, the bundle is just flat out better value, with no strings attached. You can sell off the Space Marine half if all you want is Necrons.)

Honestly I tend to make Jokes when I role a bunch of ones simply because I've never taken Warhammer Superseriously. So if I roll a load of one will playing necrons Ill be like. "Are you guys running on Windows Vista or something the targets over there." One example of this where I had my opponent and his friend laughing was a Death Guard VS tau Match. I'm playing death Guard first shots i fire are from A blight Hauler. I kill on Fire Warrior that's stood on a roof in the open. My opnent is looking a little shocked so I pip up. " some one yelled Duck and that dude said where" Honestly I tend to find having a bit of witty humour with your aponants tend to be more fun socially anyway.

I learned to be ok with not winning and just wnjoying the gane when i spent a few months playing yugioh with people far more skilled than I. Now i play mtg with a sauron deck to enjoy the flavour and interaction and only taking the occasional win.

I almost bought out my LGS' necrons stock when I got started. Dropped 500 bucks on a start collecting box, warriors, 2 boxes of destroyers and 2 triarch stalkers (that's all I can remember) and forgot to buy a codex. A few years later I have 14k points of both necrons and ultramarines built, and about 2500 points of knights to build
