In the same way Carnivale starter sets are worthy of praise, Battletech starter sets work the same way. A very cheap small tester, and a full game box with everything 2 players need to play a full game. And the big box costs less than a single Land Raider or plain Primaris transport.

I like Warhammer chess game, basically you get two factions with two different paint jobs trying to fight in a mirror match. Each character on your field has different movement and attack capabilities. The goal is to either trap or murder your opponents leader while defending your own. There are also special stratagems and mechanics you can perform which I mostly don't remember the names of. The price range is all over the place from free to however much money your willing to throw.

Such a diverse hobby! I've been playing Battletech warhammer and Alpha Strike warhammer in the last year. The cool thing is, that those use the same minis! Just have 2 base rulebooks and your army has free rules online for both games. How neat is that? I've more recently started investigating Steel Rift warhammer too. Written by that dude Ash Barker who does videos on super diverse warhammer battlereports on his own channel, called something like Guerilla Miniature Games warhammer. I've ordered some decently priced, customisable Steel Rift warhammer models from Death Ray Designs warhammer too! Thanks warhammer, for this diverse hobby!

Fantasy Flight should think about acquiring miniature rights to SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic). It's Star Wars thousands of years in the past when the Sith Empire existed. There is also a Republic stand-in as well. The great thing about it is there is a lot of creative liberty there and Bioware has already built up a ton of material to use for a wargame.

For anyone wanting something similar to old Warhammer fantasy, I'd highly recommend Oathmark, it has an easy set of rules to follow and uses square blocks of infantry (which isn't popular in gaming anymore). The upside is you can use whatever races you want in your army, there's a narrative way you build your "kingdom" which includes various ways of having whatever you want, want an army of humans and orcs? Want an army of dwarves, elves and Goblins? You can make anything.

Start with 5 parsecs, it really is a great game, it will give you an understanding of TT games in general and you can make the setting anything you want, favorite movie setting, TV show or book series, being model agnostic you don't have to spent a ton of money to play, of if fantasy is more your style, 5 leagues from the borderlands might interest you, same writer for both but 5 leagues is a little harsher as you crew may not survive the first couple of missions :)

I have both the Carnevale Starter Sets, various Strigoi (the vampires) sets - I spent hours painting the Romani Caravan and lost them in a house move. The mini's are amazing (and produced in the UK) and the artwork in the books stunning. Plus TT combat support it with reasonably priced Streets of Venice MDF buildings and resin scatter terrain and new minis every month or so. These were the most amazing game minis I had come across until I picked up Bushido earlier this year. Made a 2x2 board and spent about £100 on resin to make some scenery that thematically matches the minis. And I only bought the starter set. Currently working on a GCPS army as part of Black Jack Legacy's Slow Grow, after that I need to finish some GW stuff but I also have the Moonstone Starter which has some fun characters. Plans for next year are a Justice League Dark (from the Batman Mini sister game) House of Mystery Diorama and see if can paint more than I buy. Would be easier if I had anyone to play with but no gamers around as far as I can tell, even the the Uni down the road is one of the contributors to 7TV!

As you know you did get me into Carnevale this year as well ;) Love it. It is THE most complete starter set I've seen for a warga... eh... I mean warhammer game. I'm not one of those who already have tons of terrain laying around - getting it in the starter box for a reasonable price was huge for me. I do loooove the look of the Bushido minis, but it is slightly to pricy for me, the starter set is more expensive then Carnevale and does not get me a board and terrain sadly...

There's also some wonderful games and Miniatures being produced by small companies that I recommend everyone check out. Zombie Smith makes War Of Ashes which basically is Muppets with knives after the fall of Rome, or quar which is World War 1 anteaters bois constantly locked in combat. There's fly trap Studios which makes their caveman miniature game, and a game where cute little robots beat each other up. There's also independent companies that help to resurrect long Dead games that are still fun to play like seb games and their void 1.1 line

Took me a bit too long to figure out what the heck was going on here ... then I laughed out loud ... like ... a lot. If the laws of the land over Europe way are anything like the U.S.A. this is probably the best, most brilliant, way to deal with GW's insistence on calling the hobby "Warhammer" ... if everyone started doing this it would completely dilute the KZfaq algorithm advantage and eventually lead to GW losing their ownership of "Warhammer" just as Xerox lost "xerox". And it would all be GW having done this to themselves. This is some next level irony smackdown here. I'm all in for this. Awesome video, Discourse!

Awesome video! Good seeing five parsecs get some love, and especially miniatures agnostic games. Just wanted to add if you like miniatures agnostic skirmish games, Snarling Badger studios has two fantastic games. Reign in Hell and Space Station Zero are awesome games, and I've been using these games to teach my nephew about skirmish level games, solo and co-op gaming, and letting him choose his own models to print and teaching him to paint on his own choices. Both of these are easy to get into, Gameplay is fast and brutal in both of these games, and the only complaint I would say I have is that Snarling Badger studios uses D12 systems for their games, and so you need a lot of 12 Sided dice to play, which can be annoying. But we have been having a ton of fun. I would say that both games get a 10/10 for miniatures (because miniatures agnostic) And gameplay I'll say Reign in Hell is probably a 7/10 and Space Station Zero I'd call a 9/10

So I have been watching for awhile, I don't recall hearing about it, but I recommend you look at This is Not a Test if you haven't in the past. This has all the narrative elements that you can find playing Necromunda with a good campaign system while giving you the feel of playing in Fallout or Borderlands. That is one of my favorite skirmish games that I rarely get to play because no one really knows about it or is willing to take a plunge.

One curve ball recommendation is a game called _Turnip28._ It's a game about muskets, mud, murder...and root vegetables. For real, though, it's a unit-based game (somewhere in size between skirmish and mass battle), set in a grimdark blackpowder post-apocalypse (what I like to call "Bleakpowder"). Not unlike a similar game, _Sludge,_ except everyone in Turnip28 are crazed root-mutants. Mentally and physically warped by eating The Root, an enormous plant choking the life out of the world and killing all other vegetation, and now follow the visions of erstwhile root prophets. These combinations of cult leader, commander, and gentry lead their bedraggled followers across the mud-strewn countryside, for food and glory and mock-vegetables budded off from The Root in the form of extinct root veggies. Everyone is a coward, everyone has lost control of their lives, and nothing matters. So why not get into a shoot-out against other weirdos, using ancient muskets pulled from the mud? Have fun! The big draw of Turnip28, aside from its weird Cult rules (which apply highly inventive abilities, mechanics, and units to your base Turnip28 army), is the kit-bashing potential. While the creator (Max FitzGerald) offers 3D printable models for use in the game, it's a miniatures agnostic affair. You're encouraged to combine Napoleonic and medieval and whatever other bits, along with everything from epoxy pudding to static grass, to produce your own wholly unique band of lunatics. And don't forget to slather them all in dark washes and mud texture! It's everything you want out of the Inq28 movement, except with more turnips.

That looks like an incredibly comfortable jumper... And thank you for the coverage of other games.

Thanks for mentioning my favorite game; 5 Parsecs from Home! There is also the new Fantasy version, 5 Leagues from the Borderlands, which I am going to try next.
