Just starting my Bonsai journey and I keep landing on this channel. This is hands down the BEST Bonsai channel on the internet and in my opinion there’s two reasons why: 1.) Most channels assume the viewer has a certain amount of Bonsai knowledge and therefore are not suitable for absolute beginners. As a result they inadvertently send beginners on the wrong path to success. Whereas this channel has quality information for people at every level from absolute beginner to expert. 2.) This channel places emphasis on the “why” as much as the “how”. As a science teacher, I think this approach to learning is critical to a true understanding and appreciation of anything. And Josh is a naturally gifted teacher. Thank you for your time and knowledge, Josh 🙏🏻 Well done, mate!

Thanks mate, this is very humbling. You are right though, sometimes passing the knowledge on in an affective way can be harder then practising bonsai itself. I'm glad my teaching methods are working for you.

You’re the best, Josh… My bonsai journey for the past 35 years has been dedicated to the development and refinement of my 35 year old procumbens Nana “Little Red Dragon”… I presently work with a mentor and winterize my tree at a bonsai nursery.. After watching your video, I get tempted to work with another, younger tree… but, I just turned 75, and it might make more sense just to concentrate on the Dragon.😀I think your work is outstanding! arigato gozaimasu, ciao, John

You can always purchase a half decent piece of Pre bonsai stock and start the work from there.

Fantastic video. Thank you so much! I have watched many of your videos at this point, and this one is definitely the one I should’ve started with! I purchased a bonsai on the side of the road on a whim without fully understanding what goes with it. At this point, it is not a very healthy tree due to my lack of understanding on how to take care of it. Now, I am determined to turn it around and bring it back to a healthy state. Your videos are definitely helping me get there!

Hey Josh! First of all; your channel is one of the best i've visited so far!! great videos; keep on doing them!!! My question would be, when is the best time for repotting an styling junipers in nursery state who have not been shaped or pruned at all till now... Greetings from Luxembourg.

thank you for the kind words. Best time for potting up a nursery stock juniper is early spring. if your in an area that still gets surprise frosts in early spring wait till mid spring. Before you pot it up though make sure your happy with the tree and it is fully developed as once it goes into the Bonsai pot it will slow down. Make sure you don't do a heavy prune and repot in the same season unless you are fully aware of the trees health and energy.

Yes slipping potting does not disturb the tree or the roots so you can do them together

Hey Josh. Thanks for the video. I have a small juniper and could use some advice on trimming and cleaning the root ball for repotting. I dont want to over or under do it. Any advice would be super helpful.

on a juniper you can remove 30 - 50% of the root mass during early to mid spring. Only do so when the tree is in a healthy state. if the tree is weak or looks un healthy concentrate on getting the trees health in shape first.

I looked everywhere and found a great deal of aluminum wire, but couldnt find any aluminium wire at all, so I cut up a coat hanger and tried to bend it around the tree, after driving it under my finger nail by accident, I used another chunk of the cut up coat hanger to just make a tent stake to peg down a couple branches. Will try again after my hands heal.

Not sure what you mean here. Maybe your trying to point out the way Australians and Americans pronounce aluminium different? Either way Bonsai Wire is Bonsai Wire. You either get copper or aluminium.

Buying cheap tools from online shops is the worst choice I have ever made.

The cheap tool market is the hardest to navigate as you just don't know what the tools are made of. Once your serious about the hobby good tools are a must.

There not that bad. I got a little file and sharpen them. I now use that intire kit just on roots.

That statement wasn't made in this video, the closest thing that comes to that is when we mentioned that keeping trees indoors won't get you a good Bonsai and this is more of a novelty. In the same breath we said keep a ficus outside and watch it thrive.
