The Eagle's Nest wasn't Hitler's summer residence, and neither was it the location of his meeting with Neville Chamberlain. That was The Berghof which has since been destroyed, but was located not far from there, just down the mountain a little.

Hitler actually hated this place. He was extremely claustrophobic. They had to back his car into the tunnel while he imagined he was somewhere else. The reason the elevator has reflective walls was to help him deal with the tight space. It's sad that some tourists don't respect the locals that are dining there.

Note a few errors in the video: Hitler only visited this place on a few occasions, he disliked how secluded and claustrophobic it was and felt he could be cornered by the Allies. He spent most of his time in this area near the base of the mountain at his summer residence the Berghof, where he also entertained heads of state.

That's what another YT channel says too, that Hitler visited Eagle's Nest only about ten times. But isn't this where all the photos were taken of Hitler with top Nazis and Eva Braun?? I went to Berchtesgaden in the 1990's but got there too late in the afternoon to go up to Eagle's Nest.

@@halibut1249 There were a couple pictures of Hitler and various guests taken up on the Eagle’s Nest or Kehlsteinhaus, as it was originally called. Some of his staff later said though that he wasn’t fond of the height and avoided going there for pleasure (or work). He would mostly use it to show off to German and foreign dignitaries. Apparently 14 official visits were counted, so the 10 guessed by his staff is on the low side. The Kehlsteinhaus was often used by Eva Braun and her guests though, including for some of the wedding celebrations for Gretl Braun and Hermann Fegelein. The pictures (and films) you probably saw were taken a few kilometres further down the mountain at the “Berghof”, which was basically the centre of a Nazi village. Most of the films and pictures were shot by the Brown sisters and used for propaganda.

@@nvw2978 - yes, the terrace that is seen in so many photos was part of Berghof. Today the Berghof is gone, only a few pathways and retaining walls swallowed up by woods. The big tourist attraction today, with stunning views of surrounding Bavaria and Austria, is Eagle's Nest, further up. You have to take a special bus up the steep road and then an elevator to the top where EN is..

Hitler went up there 7 times. Main reasons: he could not get the sun on his eyes, light was too intense and he felt trapped being on top if the elevator was broken or failure of generator. Actually the elevator broke for 3 hours when Hitler was there in July 1940 and he said he will never be back, but yet he did for 3 more times.

If you want to avoid the masses but still have comparable views, drive along the nearby B999 Panorama road, toll is just 8 Euro but you get tremendous sights across both the Austrian and Bavarian sides. There are numerous rest stops, benches, and a toilet & kiosk. You can also see the Kehlsteinhaus from afar, unfortunately the view of the Königsee is blocked. But you can go on a baot tour of that separetly (be sure to do the full hike around Obersee to the waterfall too).

The Kehlsteinhaus (known as the Eagle's Nest in English-speaking countries) is a Third Reich-era building erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rises above the Obersalzberg near the town of Berchtesgaden. It was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings. It was visited on 14 documented instances by Adolf Hitler, who disliked the location due to his fear of heights, the risk of bad weather, and the thin mountain air.[1][2] Today it is open seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden, and tourist site.

Obviously the people in this video have No idea of the seriousness of this place. What the purpose was for, the millions of lives that were lost and the millions more that were effected by the people who this place meant for. I understand that it has a beautiful view, paid for by millions of souls!!!!

The best thing about that place and it's ideology is when Easy Company of the 101st Airborne took it over! It's absolutely beautiful country though! No arguing that!

I know this is not a concentration camp, but this is still a curiously sunny and upbeat video about the occasional residence of possibly the most reviled man in modern history....

Yeah it was the man not the place and the weather is neutral and hey the place is beautifull so why not be upbeat, and speaking of concentration camps the British brought them into being in South Africa during the Boer war .

@@tinkles30 oh your right people go because they want to see where these people who were so much a part of history which if it didn't affect their lives certainly affected their parents and grandparents lives. Yes it is fascinating to be at a place where history was made and altered and to see somewhat of the same scenery a privelidge . By the way for anyone interested anyone who follows votes for or serves under an idiot who advocates injections of disinfectant needs their brains testing

@Eff dees If that's what you think then you also have misunderstood my comment. And I was not the one who got insulting with the previous commenter. I never made a claim against the beauty of the place. My comment was about the video being very sunny. I'm always happy to have a rational discussion. I am not the one who took it to some other topic about electing a disinfectant shooting president. And I know MANY people who have visited this place and they have all mentioned how beautiful it is. But no one has ever told me they went there not knowing its history significant to the war and all that goes with it.
