Explore the intricate details and engineering challenges involved in the construction and assembly processes of the new CMS Endcap Calorimeter known as HGCAL (High Granularity Calorimeter) in this short CAD (Computer Aided Design) animation.
Scheduled for installation during the third LHC long shutdown, the HGCAL is set to replace the current CMS Endcap Calorimeters, addressing the unprecedented challenges posed by the upcoming HL-LHC (High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider). The HL-LHC is expected to provide up to ten times more collisions than the present LHC.
The HGCAL will be composed of hundreds of tonnes of metallic structures interleaved with around 620 square meters of silicon sensors and approximately 400 square metres of scintillator tiles. This renders it the largest detector ever constructed based on silicon technology!
