Aquarium algae is your best friend. There are 1,000s of types of algae so you might as well pick out a favorite. Although many algae are bad actors, most are pretty harmless.
The harmless algae can be found mostly in the green algae classification. There are thousands of algae in this group and they are differentiated by their appearance.
Shrimp, Snails and Ostracods eat green algae. Examples of green algae include green water. Green water is wonderful and looks worse than it actually is. Another example of a green algae is spot algae. This is a single celled algae the grows into a colony.
Algae is a sign that your aquarium is alive and that nutrients are present. But the down side to these algae are the cynobacteria algae. The algae are nasty and you do not want them in your aquarium at all.
There are exotic algae like golden algae and bird bath algae (red algae) that serve many useful purposes to both fish keepers and humans. So, you see, algae is your friend, not your enemy.
FATHER FISH is an advocate for natural aquariums. His research over 25 years provides a wealth of information about the creation and maintenance of natural aquariums.

What I used to do was put a piece of blunt glass outside in a bucket in direct sunlight. I'd let it sit there for a while to build up a nice mat of algae then I'd pick it up and place it in my tank. The various kinds of pleco *loved* it, they would in a few hours completely clean it off. You could see how excited they got when they were near the glass.

Breaking all the rules so congrats and off topic you've earned them. I started with ponds, ended up with tanks as a 10 year old. Never even knew what a test kit was. By the time I was a teenager, I had made my parents' house sound like a spa. Tanks replaced TV's, and friends all got tanks. Wed watch tanks not tv. Just had ug filters, at first. OMG! friend's had all these fandango stuff. Theirs died, mine thrived as I had little ponds. Tanks breed quicker than fish. Algae, mmm kept front clean. I'LL SHOW MYSELF OUT. Cheers for all the wisdom.

why dont i get any algae ? is my tank lacking nutrients???
@Jen.K
@Jen.K 7 ай бұрын
@@sandidsaman7723 overgrowth of algae is usually caused by a combination of light and nutrients, usually light. You can put a bucket of water outside in direct sunlight with no nutrients and within a few days it starts growing algae, in a few weeks, if you keep replenishing the water, it becomes completely green. Put that same bucket in the shade and it will take much longer to see any green starting to develop. If you want some algae, get a better, stronger light, or move your tank closer to a window where it can get some sunlight.

I once had some orange hair algae show up in a natural tropical tank I was doing. At first I thought it was synthetic fiber but upon closer inspection it looked like orange hair algae( had lots of green hair algae in the tank at that time). There was only ever a small amount of the orange but it was growing. Don’t know if it was a mutation or just an algae I had never seen before.

I have some unfiltered small tanks with a bunch of plant cuttings I throw in sand on the bottom leaves etc just a tank of water and 'stuff' lol and it gets the protien film on top. Its perfect there are live tiny food in the tank I tip all my fish eggs in these tanks and forget about them till I see the babies. They eat the little bugs and they feed on the ugly protien film on the top and I don't have to feed them at all till they get a bit bigger. I only clean front glass and pull hair algea out because I have had small fish get stuck in it before. I do not like blue green and cyanobac because some forms release toxins but theres a snail in Australia that will eat it called waterhouse snails I don't see it very often though.

Congratulations ! 50k is a huge milestone. On to 100k FF! 💖 Question for y’all out there, would you say hair algae is directly linked to anything? I’ve heard it said that algaes can be from over feeding. I’m only feeding every other day or every 3rd day, what the fish will eat immediately. No nitrates, the tank is heavily planted with a 4” substrate.

If it’s fast growing stems I’ve got some got some hornwort, elodia, red ludwigia and twisted valisinsria in there. Otherwise I also have a couple of types of swords, anubias, dwarf red lily, alternanthera reineckii super red, Java moss, subwassertang, dwarf baby tears, Amazon frogbit, duck weed, salvinia for floating plants on top. It’s my first go at a tank and I went with a 14g. I think next time I’ll go for at least 20g so it’s easier to maintain the balances 😅

Hi there , I've been thinking about two filtration systems, also about algae, snails plants and shell fish. I thought if it would be beneficial, add an undergravel filter, which had some synthetic fiber fabric, maybe a thin layer of sponge to prevent the soil from penetrating, then add coarse sand, and above the sand a layer of very small round pebbles, and then the rocks, sticks or drifting wood, and the plants; and the other filter I thought of would be the compartment filter behind the rear glass wall of the aquarium with dofeentes mayerias like onion bags, expanded clay, large and small round pebbles, coal, coarse sand there to add a transparent hose to bring the water to pass through an ultra violet lamp, to kill the algae spores, returning the water back to the aquarium, add aeration stones, in the transparent acrylic tubes that would take air to the undergravel filter; also add some shell fish to the bottom of the aquarium to help with filtration. I have a question about snails eating plants, and what is your opinion on an aquarium like this? Thanks in advance for your time.... .....I will be waiting for your reply. God bless you.........

I did this type system many years ago. The UG is counter intuitive for a natural system. Take a hard look at the Deepo substrate natural aquarium with its components. It is simple to install but the most complex natural system.

Another great video and congrats on hitting 50k subscribers. I have directed several people to Discord and KZfaq. I have a question for you. I have some cyano bacteria growing on the back and sides of the tank. At least I believe that’s what it is. It’s an acrylic tank and the only thing that will get it off is a credit card. It’s not like how you described. Is that because it adheres to acrylic better than rocks? Would you suggest I remove it from the back and sides of the tank too? Thanks again.

Algea are a fascinatie category of organisms in their own right. And even can be pretty. But in planted living room aquaria i wish too reduce them to a minimum.

Great video. Could you talk about aquarium diatoms? I am going through some trouble getting rid of brown hair like aquarium diatoms.

Sorry may be off the topic but I can find much video of you talking of cichlid. I have seen some videos of you with planted tanks. Can you talk about making an ecosystem for mbuna plants sourcing bio materials locally as in am in Thailand. I am trying to learn much of these fish. I love your Idea of ecosystem and I got in this hobby with this idea with a small tank now I want a big one and unlike you I'll be able to keep only one tank but I want to continue this eco system method but don't know how Looking forward for your wisdom

Guppies will also eat beard algae, I had a group of it that infected my tank while I was at college, so I added some guppies and it was gone within the week

See his other video... (Search) Dull Tank to Aquatic Wonderland... Between my tank conversion and a few new plecos, most of my algae disappeared in a messy 55 gallon puffer tank. I rarely have to even clean any of my glass, now!!

Hey Father, You made this for me and my brown funky algae issue, didn't you? 😂 I need plants. You wanted me to wait for this week to place an order. Are you ready for that yet?

Thank you Father Fish for all of your wisdom here, my question is this, should i worry when my NO3 get to 175mg/ltr? I love to hear your word on it.

Nothing to worry about. If it makes you apprehensive do a 10% water change or add more plants. You might also consider the possibility you are overfeeding.

@father fish - all my levels are great. And fish are doing well but I’m getting extremely high levels of phosphates consistently in my tub pond. Fish are doing well, just worried about prolonged high levels. What should I do? Thanks ib ln advance! Love all the knowledge you share with us!

You should stop inventing things to worry about. Research the role of phosphates in the cycle.
