Royal Enfield Scram 411 adventures in Wales continues with a last-minute decision to do a ride to Cwm Cynfal viewing point, followed by some of the beaten track mooching in Ganllwyd.
Note: I have started to add What3Words location information in the videos for the places of interest where we are stopping when out on the rides, should you want to visit them for yourself. Hope you find this useful. Link to What3Words website www.what3words.com
Saturday 4th May 2024 Exploring google earth I spotted Cwm Cynfal viewing point to the east of Blaenau Ffestiniog, and with the weather looking promising I plotted a 60 mile round trip into the Beeline App and set of to explore some more awe inspiring Welsh roads and landscapes. Taking the A470 to Blaenau Ffestiniog we took a right turn to join the B4391 east to Cwm Cynfal viewing point. Spending a few moment to take in the view and take a couple of pictures we continue east on B4391, eventually turning right onto the A4212 and heading west to rej-oin the A470 at Trawsfyndd. Heading South on the A470 towards Dolgellau, I spotted a road to the right that seemed to be running parallel to the main road, so I decided to take the opportunity to explore a little. I latter discovered the location is called Ganllwyd It appears that the road may be an access to a farm and forestry commission land judging by. the evidence of tree felling. Decided to follow the road for a little while, discovering it narrowed to almost become a dirt track. Noticing that there was a property some way down the track I opted to turn and head back towards the main road (A470). Re-joining the A470 south we head back to base to conclude another marvellous few hours exploring God’s country!

Hello Michael, thank you for watching and leaving a comment 👍🏻 ‘Bardsy Ísland’ that’s it I keep on forgetting it’s name! 🙂 I do envy you having this incredible place as your back garden and count myself very lucky that we have a base over there. I stopped off at the viewing point you mention when I was out riding around the area last Saturday, there will be a video of it coming up in a few weeks time. Got chatting to a chap up there who had just picked up a Himalayan and was as we all do under such circumstances, taking the long way home!’ 😀 I was blown away by Llyn Peninsula such a beautiful place. videos of that ride will kick off next week! Thanks again for taking the time to watch and leave a comment 👍🏻😀

This has been a great exploration of an area of north Wales I'm unfamiliar with. That track you took through the forested part made me smile as the route I've sent you may well finish up similarly - very difficult to tell from the map. So many little roads up there in north Wales head off to great places with what look like interesting viewpoints or perhaps an old chapel but then fizzle out into nothing - or a footpath perhaps. Look forward to seeing your Llyn (can never remember the spelling) peninsula ride as we never made it there when we were staying up that way back in '14..Lummee that's 10 years ago now 😮

Hello Peter, I knew you’d like the forrest trail, as I was riding it I was thinking to myself, ‘this is Lanes Explorer territory’. Thank you for planning me a ride I’m looking forward to seeing what you have planned for me and getting out there and riding it 😀👍🏻 The Llyn Peninsular ride was really something special, akin to the last day of the Skye tour that is currently awaiting recovery. It was exceptional, the first video of the ride will be next weeks offering. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment and I look forward to receiving your assignment! 😀👍🏻 p.s. Elan Valley ride is planned and ready to go! 👍🏻

Great video, great views and good information. Nowt wrong with your audio in this one - don't know what camera/mic you're using, but you're having more success than me with my DJI Osmo Action 3. Nice one. 👍

Hi Martin, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I used the Osmo Action 4 for for this video and set out using the DJI microphone adapter with a purple panda microphone connected to it. I noticed that there was no volume level on the camera, I think the mic has failed. As back up I used my DJI wireless mic 2 connected to the Action 4 via Bluetooth. I placed the wireless mic in the front of my helmet. Which is the sound source for this video. I’ve found that problem with using the DJI wireless mics is that although they turn on and off with the camera record button, if the camera is off for any length of time the wireless mic powers off so it isn’t available when record is pressed on the camera. I have now set up a DJI lavalier mic with a dead cat in my helmet, connected it to the Action 4 through the mic adapter and set the mic volume to -16db and the sound seems about perfect. I raise the volume in post. A video with this set up will be up in a few weeks time. Fingers crossed I’ve finally managed to get the sound quality I’m after. 🤞🏻cheers, Dave 🙂👍🏻

Hello Dave and thanks for your reply. I'll look forward to seeing that video. Most of my problems revolve around my tight-fistedness to be honest, and cutting corners with budget versions of pretty much everything other than the camera itself! Time to spend a few more quid I reckon. 🤞

@@martintraffordmoorlandbike7121Martin, the video and audio quality you got when you were in Spain seemed fine. What changed after that? Getting to grips with a new setup is bound to be a long trial but hopefully now you've sorted your white balance problem all should be well. Hope so 👍

Hi Dave, it’s been a long time since I did that pass, so thanks for taking us along. Although I do sympathise with your thoughts on “tree butchery”, the Forestry Commission, is a business……they plant the trees, with the intention of cutting them down. Unfortunately it is what it is. Take that section on the right just after Bontddu heading towards Barmouth. There was an absolute outcry from locals (especially my aunty😂), about the decimation of all those trees, and the untidy mess they left behind, but it was always going to happen. What sorcery were you using to get the drone to do what it was doing 🫣🤔😂

Hello again Ian, great to have you along for the ride, albeit virtual. 😀 Yeah, I find myself really conflicted when I see hillsides being cleared of trees, I think it’s the scar on the landscape that gets left behind that I don’t like to see. I know they get re-planted and the cycle continues, just makes me sad for seeing it for some reason. I get them same feelings when I see places where quarrying has taken place and mountains being stripped for slate in places like Blaenau Ffestiniog and Aberllefeni where I was a few weekends back (videos to come). I am however able to reconcile that it was necessary for our ancestors to make a living from the environment and its geological features. I love to see where nature has reclaimed the landscape in such environments, the healing powers of nature are quite amazing. I concur with your Aunty, I pass through Bontddu every two weeks and was really dismayed to see the area you’re referring to and the way they went about stripping that hillside of its trees, it just looked and felt so wrong and I don’t think it was done in a very professional way at all. ‘Wood Butchery’ is probably a fitting metaphor in that particular instance, and again it has just left a gaping scar on the wider landscape. 😥 With regards to the drone footage, I have procured for myself HoverAir X1 drone. Great piece of kit, fits in your pocket, weighs nothing and has several built in shots which I’ve used in the video. Zoom out, follow and bird eye to name a few. I wanted it to capture shots of me and the bikes set in the landscapes I’m riding and I’m still experimenting with its features and possibilities. One of the great features it has is ‘snapshot’ where it does exactly that, takes snapshots with you, or others in the centre of the shot, which is really useful if you want to capture a picture of yourself and the bike for thumbnail purposes. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment on the videos. I am building a massive backlog to edit from the rides out I’m doing in Wales but I’m absolutely loving every minute of the riding and exploring, it has kindled something within me, and I can’t get enough of it. Plans are to visit the areas where my Welsh ancestry lies (Dad’s side) over the coming weeks in the area West of Llanfair Caereinon, Llanerfyl, down to Carno and Trefeglwys. 😃👍

@@MerciaMotoduring the month in January, when we are in the holiday cottage, we visit friends at Adfa, so we are know of Llanfair Caereinion. Nice area 👍 I am still struggling to get out myself, my head still isn’t in the right place. My confidence and motivation has taken a beating, even questioning whether to continue with my channel. Even though I have 100% support from my loyal subscribers, who look forward to my vids, and leave nice comments, that one b’stard really messed me up. I just can’t seem to shake it off. Ann is trying her best to coax me, saying that to pack in, is letting him win. She is right of course, but she also knows, when I go “quiet”, I am not in the best of places. Hopefully get out this week 🤞
